She Works Hard for the Money

1) This song is about a woman who works hard as a waitress. What's the hardest job you've ever had? Cleaning rooms in a motel one summer during high school, though it really wasn't that hard.
2) The lyrics tell us she has worked at this job for 28 years. What's the longest you stayed with one employer? I was with Polk Museum of Art for 20 years and 4 months.
3) Donna Summer was inspired to write this song during an awards show. She ducked into the bathroom and met the elderly ladies' room attendant, whose job it was to make sure the room the spotless, the complimentary hairspray and moisturizer was abundant, and there was a hot towel for every celebrity who used the facilities. "Wow," Donna thought, "she works hard for those tips." Who is the last person you tipped? The waitress at Palace Pizza.
4) Early in her career, Donna was in the touring company of the musical Hair. It played in Munich for so long that she became fluent in German. What's the longest you have ever lived away from home? I lived in a dorm for about 6 months before I got married the first time.
5) Sam's dad is naturally outgoing and enjoys striking up conversations with waitresses, librarians, the checker at the supermarket, etc. Sam is always polite but more private. Are you more like father or daughter? More like her father.
6) A little more than 10% of the American workforce is self-employed. Have you ever been your own boss? Yes, for almost four years.

7) Labor Day weekend may offer a golden opportunity for napping and sleeping in. Do you snore? Joe says that I do sometimes.
8) Will you be attending a Labor Day picnic or barbecue? Yes! The HOA is having a pot-luck at the clubhouse, supplying burgers, dogs, and ribs. It is always well attended and the food is amazing!
9) Labor Day traditionally marks the beginning of the fall. Will you be adding any new fall clothes to your wardrobe? Not planning to. It won't get chilly here until late October (maybe).

This was fun to read! My hardest job was my first one ... a summer job as a 14-year-old dishwasher in a busy restaurant. It got so hot in that kitchen that I was seriously tempted to finish off the iced tea in customers' glasses when the busboy would bring in the used dishes. The clinking ice, the slices of lemon --- oh, my. Never did it ... but sure was tempted.

That was interesting!! I never realized the song was about a waitress. I guess I never really listened before. But yes, they do work hard for their money...and they are dependent on the tips. I try to tip accurately, and rarely have I ever NOT left a tip...but when I did, it was definitely because she didn't even try to earn it. Some people are just not cut out for that kind of work. My hardest job was probably when I worked for the testing dept. of the school board, delivering testing materials to schools. They also moved the department that same year, and I had to pack, lift, move, unpack, lift move over 400 boxes of heavy testing materials by myself...and ended up with some physical issues and a work comp claim, which helped me land a better job in the school board as a bookkeeper! It was hard too, but God helped me learn as I went, and it opened new doors for me as time went by. Enjoy your picnic lunch on Monday. Sounds really good.
ReplyDeleteI was a waitress in what seems now to be another lifetime - lol! Yes, it is very hard work, and because of this experience, I've always been a generous tipper.

ReplyDeleteYou know, it's actually crossed my mind to look for a part-time gig as a rooms attendant. Certainly, I've had my share of (mandatory) training in PPE and bio-hazards. This was an entertaining read, Terri. Thanks!
