Saturday 9.... the Beatles

Baby's In Black

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Baby's in Black (1964)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
 From our archives.

1) Black is this week's signature color because Friday was "Black Friday," the day when retailers cut their prices and consumers flock to the stores. Did you score any "Black Friday" bargains?  Joe needed watch batteries for two of his watches so we went to Foshee Jewelers, where we have gone for years for watch batteries and repairs, and I got a new band for one of my watches. They gave us 25% off because it was Black Friday.

2) Feasting and football are also popular Thanksgiving weekend pastimes. Do your Thursday-Sunday plans include pigging out or watching a game?  A little of both!

3) At Thanksgiving dinners, Crazy Sam's homemade gravy is always a hit. (Probably because she's so generous with the cognac, which gives the gravy a nutty taste.) What was particularly delicious at your Thanksgiving table?  Can I just say everything?!

4) Among the biggest the Black Friday advertisers are Target, Kohl's, Macy's and Best Buy. If you could have a $100 gift card to any one of those stores, which would you choose?  Target.

5) This week's song, "Baby's in Black," is about a girl who wears black because she's in mourning. Do you find that the color you're wearing reflects your mood?
Not so much. I never really thought about it.

6) The woman who inspired this song, Astrid Kirchherr, has been friends with Paul McCartney since he and his bandmates (John Lennon, George Harrison, Stu Sutcliffe and Pete Best) met her in Hamburg back in 1960. Tell us what you believe are the components of a strong, lasting friendship.  Trust and respect.  True for any relationship, I think.

7) In the early days of the Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon began writing a play but abandoned it. Do you have a novel, painting, play, song or poem that you're going to finish "someday?"  Nope.

8) When he was 16, George Harrison dreamed of moving to Canada, Australia or Malta. In just a few years, he would visit all those places with Beatles and eventually decided there was no place like home and stayed in England (though he did also maintain a home in Hawaii). Have you ever thought about moving to another country? If so, where?  I have not. I, too, believe there is no place like home.

9)  Random question: Finish this sentence -- If you want me to give you "yes" for an answer, the best time to approach me is anytime but saying yes would depend on what the question is.

Thanks to Crazy Sam for this week's Saturday 9!  You can join in HERE!

Thank you for your visit!  Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

A Friday Foto....

I was too tired last night to get something posted ahead (as many of you probably were!) and we slept late this morning before putting things away and running an errand (for watch batteries for Joe's watches).  Anyway, I will post one photo from yesterday and save the rest for my weekend recap on Monday.

Our Canadian neighbor, Jill, asked to bring a pie for Thanksgiving. There is a specialty bakery downtown with limited open hours and LOTS of patrons.  She ordered an apple pie and had to pick it up on Wednesday.  She said there were over 100 people lined up outside waiting to pick up orders so she went back later to find about 50 people still in line. Anyway, this apple pie was $29.00.  Mrs. Callender's from Publix would have been fine, but she wanted to get this one from Born & Bread.  It was very good and obviously made fresh with sliced apples AND it LOOKED amazing.

We also had pumpkin, pecan, and lemon meringue (Joe's favorite pie).  We were all too full to eat big pieces so there was lots of pie (and everything else) leftover.  I sent things home with everyone.

Born and Bread started with a booth at the Farmer's Market. A very young couple own the business and do all the work.  Now they have a storefront but are only open on Saturday mornings and Wednesday evenings.  They supply pastries and bread to many establishments in town.  Here is their website if you want to see the beautiful things they bake!

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving with good friends sharing camaraderie and food.  Joe and I are still cleaning up today though. It really is a lot of work.  I think I may resort to using paper plates next year.  That would help.  When we do a dinner party, we don't let our guests help clean up (two offered to help).  I saw lots of pictures on FB yesterday evening and most of them had paper plates. Smart.

That's all for today. I want to start getting some Christmas things out but we still haven't had help getting the tree out of the shed's loft. I guess we asked the wrong guy at church.  He has had two weeks to get here - before Thanksgiving - and we still haven't heard from him.  I wanted this weekend to get the tree up.  :(   Now we know better.

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!!  God bless!

Whimsical Wednesday...

Exploring fashion this week.  I love this dress and only wish I looked like that
wearing it!  She needs a purse for her lunch out with friends.
Which one should she use? Match the hat or the shoes or neither?

#1  Nieman Marcus, circa 1960

#2  Satchel Handbag Wristlets Clutch

#3  Envelope Handbag

There is no link-up.  Just check everyone's comments below and have some fun.

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!
God bless!!

My thoughts... I do love the dress. It seems very 1950s.  Wish I looked like that!  I think handbag #3 matches better but I just love handbag #2.

Monday's Weekend Recap...

We had a fun and busy weekend!!  On Friday we took another couple from here in Mas Verde to Mazzaro's Italian Market in St. Petersburg.  Word is getting around that it is a great place to find some really good food and unusual gifts.  Steve and Jane play Nickels with us on Friday nights.  They are 'snowbirds' from North Carolina and have spent winters here for 16 years!  They are so nice and are lots of fun.  I think they enjoyed the day (they said so over and over, anyway).  I drove and they treated us for lunch. It was a treat!

Joe is standing by "The Big Cheese" at Mazzaro's.  They order a
1,000-pound provolone cheese every year and cut it a couple of weeks
before Christmas.  This one has been aged for 2 years.  It is HUGE!

It is mandatory for anyone we introduce to Mazzaro's to pose at the
Vespa photo op.  Steve and Jane were good sports.

There is a new photo op there now and they posed in it too!!  LOL

Saturday was Mas Verde's Thanksgiving get-together at the clubhouse.  Our HOA provides the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and gravy.  Everyone else brings a dish to share.  I took my Jiffy Corn Casserole and it was nearly gone. I'm making it for our Thanksgiving too.  It was a very fun event and the count was 147 people attending.

These two ladies are my good buddies!  Anne (left) lives across the street and
Jill (right) lives next door.  Anne and Paul are full-time residents while
Jill and Murray come down from Canada for the winter.
We love them all!

Anne is talking with Jill's sister, Judy and her hubby Tim.

The three amigos...

It was a nice crowd and the food was all delicious!

At one point, everyone was looking out the windows at the beautiful sunset.  A few of us
got up and went outside to snap a photo.  This picture doesn't do it justice.

I lifted this photo from the HOA Facebook page.  Someone caught me laughing at something
Jill said!  That's me in the middle, in the orange top.

And I lifted this one too, of Jill talking to Joe.

We went to Sunday school and church yesterday, then had Helen and Cheryl over for lunch after church.  Helen loves ham and bean soup so I make it every  2-3 months.  I put it in the crockpot before we left.  We stopped at Publix for cornbread muffins and a dessert carrot cake so I didn't bake like I usually do.  There just wasn't time.  We all enjoyed the meal and I sent the leftovers home with them.

Today Joe has fasting labs, I will get some cleaning and laundry done.  I think our young fellas from church will be around some time to get our decorations out of the shed's loft area.  Hoping we can get that done because the rest of the week is just crazy for us.

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving and sharing our blessings with friends!

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

Saturday 9, No More Tears...

No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: No More Tears (Enough Is Enough) 1979

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) These lyrics use weather as a metaphor for romance. Here at Saturday 9, we're more literal. How do the skies look where you are this morning?  Beautiful blue!

2) According to Merriam-Webster, "enough is enough" is what you say when you want something to stop because you "can no longer accept or deal with it." When did you recently say -- out loud or to yourself -- "enough is enough."  When our cat, Lucy, got out and wouldn't come home.

3) Grammy winner Luther Vandross began his career as a background singer and performed on "No More Tears." Tell us about one of your early jobs.  My first "real" job, other than baby sitting, was working in an ice cream parlor, waiting on customers and dipping ice cream.

4) Both Donna Summer and Barbra Streisand made slight changes to their first names. Summer was christened "LaDonna," while Streisand's parents spelled her name the more conventional "Barbara." When she was in high school, meme mistress Samantha Winters went from "Sammy" to "Sam." Did you ever make a similar change to your first name?  My name is really Teresa but I have been Terri since I was born. I didn't change it, my parents did.  I'm glad because I don't like Teresa.

5) Hair was higher maintenance in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Streisand and Summer are both sporting styles that would require chemical treatment, like a perm or relaxer. Today's looks are less rigidly styled and tend to be smoother or slightly messy. How often do you change your look?  I quit coloring my hair about five years ago and stopped wearing make-up when I retired. That's it.

6) In 1979, it seems every kid was asking Santa for Star Wars toys. Some things don't change since the Star Wars franchise remains popular with children and toymakers after more than 40 years. What book or toy did you love as a child that remains popular today?  I think Nancy Drew books are still being sold today. I loved them!

7) Thinking of things that endure ... In 1979, the #1 show in the ratings was 60 Minutes. It's still on, every Sunday night, and in the summer of 2019 it came in at #4 in the Nielsen ratings. What's the most recent show you watched?  Most recently, Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives was on.  Was it news, sports or entertainment?  Entertainment, I guess.

8) In 1979, the price for a dozen eggs averaged 85¢. Today, it's about twice that. Are you more likely to use eggs to prepare the main course (like an omelet or Eggs Benedict) or as part of a recipe (anything from a cake to a meatloaf)?  All of the above, I guess. We use a lot of eggs.

9) Random question: You’re alone in your car, driving through your neighborhood on a bright, sunny day. You get a flat tire. You have a spare and a jack in your trunk. Would you fix it yourself or call for help?  I would call AAA. That's why we pay for the annual membership.  I COULD change a tire, but I am old with bad knees.

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions! You can find her HERE to join in!

Happy Saturday!  Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

Friday Photos...

How can it be Friday already?!!  Good golly, this week went fast!  I am once again keeping tradition by posting photos from my week and giving credit to Debbie, at Breathing In Grace, for starting this!

We went to "our" Publix earlier this week and
found Christmas decorations on the light poles.
It's here. Christmas is almost here!

"Our" Publix at Southgate Shopping Center.

We went to the farm (Joe's client) yesterday.
Here is Joe opening the entrance gate.

Beautiful Majesty got carrots this week.

"My" buddy, Doc, got carrots and an apple piece.

Pistol got carrots and an apple piece too.

I had a few really small carrot pieces left and
it is an easy walk now, to go over to the goat
pasture!  Prince was his typical aggressive self and
had me laughing at his antics for a treat!

A face only a mother could love!!

How could you ever get tired of this view?!!

No cattle as we went in yesterday, but we
saw a few on the way out.

Of course, we are thrilled to have Lucy back in the fold.  She is acting her normal self today like her outside adventure never happened.  And it better never happen again!!

We are off to Mazzaro's Italian Market in St. Pete today with two friends who have never been there before.  Steve and Jane are snowbirds from North Carolina and play Nickels with us on Fridays.  It is always fun to introduce friends to our favorite place to shop!  Pictures on Monday!!

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!
God bless!!

Thankful Thursday...

I am joining Rebecca Jo, at Knit By God's Hand, for her Thankful Thursday.  You can join in HERE to share your blessings with others!

Most of you who connect with me on Facebook know what my Thankful Thursday post is all about!!

On Tuesday afternoon, one of our neighbors dropped in to talk awhile.  When she was leaving, I was standing at the door finishing our conversation and Lucy ran right out of the house.  This cat has never shown any behavior that would lead me to believe she wanted out. She has been an indoor cat for the entire nine years we have had her.

I think she found a way to get under the house because she disappeared so fast.  All of our neighbors were out helping us call for her and look for her.  Nothing.

I put out food and water when it got dark, put her litter box out so she could get the scent to find home, and prayed that she would stay off the busy street behind us.  Lots of people were praying for her and for us.  If you have a pet, you understand.

Joe and I didn't sleep well. We kept getting up to look outside and call her name.  No Lucy. We walked around calling her when we got up. Joe had a doctor's appointment.  I stayed home. I sat in the quiet, hoping to hear her if she came around. I thought I heard her so got up and opened the front door to look.  There she was, heading around the back of the house. I called her to come home. The back door was open for her to come in so I closed the front door and headed to the back of the house. There she was. I opened the sliding glass door quietly and invited her to come in.  She hesitated, then darted into the kitchen. Praise God!!

I closed up the back of the house and went to see where she went.  "Her room" is the front guest room and that is where she was.  When I approached, she went under the bed. Where she spent all afternoon and evening.  Joe got her to come out for a quick pat.  He saw no injuries and she isn't dirty.  She had not come to me yet when we went to bed. I am writing this on Wednesday night. Hoping the quiet night will get her out to eat and use the litter box.  If we are lucky, she will be sleeping with us when we wake up (her usual spot).

I am so THANKFUL that our sweet Lucy has returned. I was really concerned that we would never see her again.

Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

Whimsical Wednesday...

This painting is called Sprit by George Roux .1885.   Let's get creative today!!  Tell us a story about this painting.  Make it a couple of sentences or a couple of paragraphs.  Make us smile or make us cry!  Or just tell us how it makes you feel.  Art really is all about how it makes you feel.

No link-up.  Just read the comments of others and perhaps meet someone new to visit!!

Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

My offering...

It was their song.  He heard it always in his heart and couldn't believe she came to him one last time. Perhaps he could finally let her go...
