Tuesday Tidbits....

I don't really have much for today, so "tidbits" is a good word for this post!

  • I got the laundry done.
  • I took down most of the artwork on our walls.
  • I packed two more boxes of "stuff".
  • I hosed down the pool deck which was filthy from all the roof dirt.  Had to do that before we let the cats go out.  It was really dirty out there.
  • Told the cats to enjoy the outside because soon they will be inside only cats.
  • Joe went to Sam's Club for a few things.
  • I got some/most of the nail holes plugged.
  • Cleaned out a couple more drawers.
I'm ready to be moved!!  But I'm also wondering how it got to be the end of January already!

Thanks for your visit!!  Peace & hugs.

Weekend Recap on Monday....

We had a great weekend away, but I still couldn't shake the feeling that I should be at home packing! Ha!

It was good seeing Tammy and Bruce.  Bruce continues to make progress with this therapy. It's been a little over two years since his stroke.  He has come such a long way from being nearly comatose. He walks fine, though has to use the walker because his vision is still a problem. He can carry on a conversation so much better now.  When he is rested and not excited, he does much better with complete sentences. He is happy and motivated and my sister has been such a good caregiver.  She is a rock, but she really needs a break.

Joe stayed with Bruce while we got out for some shopping and errands on Saturday morning, which was nice for us to have some sister time, but she really just needs a break.   Bruce's kids are fairly close by and do stop in now and then. One of his daughters and a great-granddaughter came for dinner with us Saturday night, but they don't offer to take him for a day or to come stay for a day. I hope they can get away in a month or so and come down to see our new house.  Bruce travels pretty well.  They have doctor appointments at the VA clinic in Gainesville, FL and we are only another two hours from there, so it's manageable for them to visit.

It was fun getting to know Tammy's cat, Fuzzy.  She enjoyed being spoiled by "aunt Terri".  Fuzzy is actually a sister to our Vinny and is just now allowed to be in the house.  She is such a good cat!!

The roof is done on our current house.  It looks weird to us since we have always had a dark green roof and our buyers chose a lighter color shingle.

We are hopeful that we can close on our new home by the end of this week, or at least by the first of the following week.  There is lots to get done over there before we start moving in.  Planning a garage sale for Saturday, the 18th.  The push is on!!!!

Glad to have today off from work!!  Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!

Made it home!

Just a quick note to let you know we made it home.  Good travel, good weather and a good time with my sister and Bruce.  More tomorrow in my weekend recap!!

Pleasantly tired.  Glad I took Monday off and can sleep in a bit, get the laundry done and do some more packing.

Not sure I'll catch up with all the blogs, but I'll catch what I can!  Peace, love & hugs!

Saturday 9....

I am participating in the Saturday 9 so it will post on Saturday morning while we will be at my sister's.  I'll catch up when we return!  Thanks to The Gal Herself for another fun Saturday 9!!

Brokenhearted

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Brokenhearted (2012)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a girl who is eager and anxious for her new lover to call. Do you owe anyone a call? An email? A text?   Not at this writing, but probably all three by the time we return from the WiFi-free zone over the weekend.

2) The lyrics are peppered with the informal English exclamation, "cheerio!" What pops into your head when you close your eyes and think of England? Downton Abbey.

3) This week's artist, Karmin, is a husband/wife duo who met at college, and that meeting changed the course of their lives and careers. Think of someone who has had a huge impact on your life. Did you know, as soon as you met, that this was going to be a life-changing relationship?  I have to say Joe, and yes, I knew.

4) Though she sings about consuming tequila, the female side of Karmin, Amy, is a big proponent of healthy eating. She recommends organic foods that are free of pesticides, hormones, food coloring and added sugar. Think about your most recent meal. Was it a good example of "healthy eating?"  Absolutely not.  I have been so bad these past months.  Bad, bad, bad.

5) Husband Nick has his own Twitter account (@NickKarmin), but he doesn't use it often. His last tweet was back in August. What's the last thing you posted to social media? (No, your blog doesn't count.)  It would be something on Facebook. I don't have a Twitter account and I don't remember that I have Instagram most of the time.

6) Karmin performed "Brokenhearted" live on Dancing with the StarsDWTS is very big business for ABC-TV. So many people vote for their favorite couples each week that their phone and text systems often overload. Have you ever voted for a contestant on American Idol, DWTS, The Voice, etc.?  I don't watch any of them anymore, but during the first couple of seasons of Idol and DWTS I did indeed vote.  I've never watched The Voice.
7)  In 2012, the year"Brokenhearted" was popular, the average cost for a gallon of gas was $3.91. In 2016, it had dropped to $2.40. When it's time to fill up your tank, do you shop around for the lowest price/gal.?   Yes, indeed!  Are you brand loyal and always return to the same station, regardless of price?  I usually fill up at Sam's Club, but on the road we tend to look for Sunoco or Flying J.  Or do you just buy gas from the nearest station when you're running low?  At home, Sam's Club usually has the lowest price.  On the road, we use apps like Gas Guru or Waze to find the least expensive station.

8) In 2012, the Space Shuttle Endeavor was retired and placed on permanent display at the California Science Center, a Los Angeles museum dedicated to encouraging excitement and enthusiasm about air and space travel. Let's say you had a long weekend to spend in Los Angeles. Would you go out of your way to see The Endeavor?  No.  What else would you like to do during your time in the City of Angels?  I would spend a long weekend most anyplace but California.  It has never been a longed-for destination.  Ever.  And I've been to the Kennedy Space Center many, many times so sure wouldn't go out of my way to get to the California Science Center just to see the Endeavor.

9) While we're thinking about aviation ... Statistics show that it's still a predominantly male field, and less than 10% of commercial pilots are women. Would you be nervous flying with a woman pilot?  No, I would not be nervous.  I'm sure she has passed all the tests required and had the hours needed to become a commercial pilot....

I'm fine with woman working in "traditionally" male jobs as long as requirements haven't been dumbed down to allow a woman (or any minority) to qualify.  If you need a 97 to pass, everyone should have to get a 97 to pass.  If you have to carry 80 pounds up three flights of stairs within a certain amount of time, then everyone should have to do it to qualify - even if that means the 100 pound woman will fail.  Equality is equality.  Can you tell this is one of my soap-box things?!  If you want equal pay and equal respect in a job, then you'd better be equal in your skills and expertise.  If you can't do it, then you just need to find another line of work.  It's that simple.  (Quit marching and carrying horrid signs and belly-aching and boo-hooing.)  I'm also fine with men working in traditionally female jobs, again as long as they are qualified...and they should get equal pay there as well!!

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for stopping by today!!  Peace & hugs.

Friday Foto Friends....

I'm linking up with Deb, over at Breathing In Grace, for Friday Foto Friends!

We are off to see my sister in Georgia this weekend.  It will be a nice break for us.  Life is about to get even crazier over these next few weeks.

These next photos are the empty hutch and cupboards in the dining room, and the boxes loaded with all the glassware that was in them.  I don't even think the kitchen will be as hard as the dining room was to sort and pack.

The new roof on our house was finished in one day. Joe said there were around ten men here yesterday.  They started at 7:30 and finished at 2:30.  The City came by and signed off with their inspection and it is done.  Wow.  I expected it to take two or three days.  This is the same company that we hired to also do the roof on our new house. They did a great job, so I'm glad they will also be doing our new house.

It looks like we will be closing by the end of next week on the new house which is great. That gives us a couple of weeks to get work done there and start moving some things in.

Your prayers for our safe travels would be much appreciated! Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!

Thankful Thursday....

Linking up with blogging friend, Rebecca Jo, at Knit by God's Hand, for Thankful Thursday!

I'm thankful for cartoons that make me chuckle.  This one reminds me of my grandpups who can worry any squeaker out of any dog toy!!

This one made me laugh out loud at the irony.  Joe and I are not excited about this year's Super Bowl. Not crazy about either team.  We'll see who gets the trophy.

Another one of those old slides that I took a photo of....that's a very skinny me posing at a spot in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.  It was a long, long time ago!  Thankful for the memories!

We have had some very foggy mornings.  This was yesterday, on my drive to work.  Thankful that I made it to work safely!

I am thankful that today is my Friday!  We are going to visit my sister, Tammy, this weekend.  We sure are looking forward to it!  Thankful for family!!

I am thankful that we will most likely be closing on our new house next week.  Everything is in place. Just one more piece of the puzzle - the appraisal. Financing has already been approved and is in place.  Not concerned about it.

I may get a Friday Foto Friends posted tonight, but there is no WiFi at my sister's so I'll be off-line all weekend.  Will catch up with everyone when we get back.

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!

Wednesday's Hodgepodge!

Today's Hodgepodge, courtesy of our ever-amazing grandmother-to-be Joyce, is all about salt water and the islands!  Join in with all of us Hodgepodgers by clicking her button below! Thank you, Joyce!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 294

Here are the questions to this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog, then hop back here tomorrow to share answers with the universe. Here we go-

1. "The cure for anything is salt water-tears, sweat, or the sea." (Isak Dinesan) Would you agree?  Yes.  All three can certainly be cures for any number of ills.  Of the three, which has 'cured' you most recently?  I've been sweating a lot lately with all the packing, sorting and lugging of boxes, but that has not been a "cure" for anything other than to make me feel like I am accomplishing something. A real cure for me is always hearing the ocean gently rolling in on the beach.  Ahhhhhh.....

2. What's something you can't eat without salt?  Corn on the cob.  Do you normally salt your food a lot, a little, or not at all?  I probably over-salt potatoes and eggs on my plate.  I don't use a lot of salt when I cook, but would rather let folks salt to their own taste.

3. Sands of time, bury your head in the sand, built on sand, or draw a line in the sand...which sandy phrase could best be applied to something in your life right now?  The sands of time are falling quickly through the hour-glass.  I feel like I should have the entire house packed and ready to move, while we haven't even closed on the new house and still have two roofs to deal with.  I have this nagging inside going on that is telling me to get it done!!

4. A favorite book, movie, or song with an island setting or theme?   I was trying to think of something and all that kept coming to mind was Gilligan's Island!  LOL  So there you have it!

5. Yesterday-did you run your day or did it run you?  Yesterday I ran my day. How so?  I finished a couple of big projects at work and then finished packing up the dining room.

6. You're on an island holiday. Will I most likely find you parked in a beach chair, shopping in town, on the back of a jet ski, or snorkeling off the back of a catamaran?  You will definitely find me parked in a beach chair with my Kindle.  Shopping happens in the late afternoon before dinner.  My snorkeling and jet ski days are over, but if someone said let's take a catamaran out, I would be right there!

7. What do you think we humans most take for granted?  Our freedoms as Americans and the opportunities afforded us that few others around the world can enjoy.

8. Insert your own random thought here.  I am SO looking forward to brighter days ahead as our new President begins to unravel the mess the former administration made over the last eight years.  It's good to have a Christian in the White House.  It's good to be supporting Israel again.  It's good that grassroots America has been heard!

Okay. That's all.  Thanks to Joyce for this week's HP!!  Joyce, I am so excited that you and hubs are going to be grandparents!!  What fun!

Thanks for your visit today!!  Peace and hugs!

Tuesday Tidbits....

There isn't much new to report today on this Tuesday.  We here in central Florida have had to deal with high winds and heavy rain these past two days.  Fortunately, we did not have tornadoes like the folks up in Georgia suffered through.  Adel, Georgia was in the national news because of the severe damage and the dozen or so deaths. Adel is only 15 miles from my sister's house, where we are headed this weekend. Kind of scary.

Joe picked up some smaller boxes at Lowe's so we both worked on packing some last night. I'll be able to finish the dining room tonight. Then on to the guest room. The garage sale pile is growing, and that's a good thing.

The roofers were not out doing bids on the new house yesterday because of the high winds.  Sure hope they are able to do it today so we can get moving on getting the new house into our possession!

Temporary inconvenience for permanent improvement!!  The key word is temporary!!

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs.

Weekend Recap on Monday....

The weekend sure went fast, though when I woke up yesterday morning and saw the clock said 5:08 a.m., I was in a little bit of a panic wondering why I hadn't set my alarm.  I was sure it was Monday and I needed to get up. Loved catching up to reality and rolling over for two more hours!

Of course, yesterday was laundry day, so got that done.  I almost finished packing in the dining room but discovered that the boxes Joe bought at Lowe's are too big for dishes. I got one box packed and the two of us had trouble lifting it.  Unpacked half of it and added some tablecloths and cloth napkins, then used five smaller boxes that we had collected. He is going to buy "medium" size boxes today. I did get all of this packed up (the plastic tub is full of garage sale stuff).

You can see some of my cat teapots.

Just a few of the platters and bowls.

This is mostly garage sale stuff.

What a mess!! And though I did get more than half of the dining room packed, there is still more to go.  The dining room is the toughest I have to do because of so much glass and family treasures.  I'll get it done this week, working in the evenings.

This coming weekend, we are going up to Georgia to see my sister Tammy, and brother-in-law Bruce.  I don't really like losing a weekend of packing, but on the other hand, I do think a little get-away will be nice and we haven't seen them in what seems like almost a year.  A bad tornado just missed them over the weekend!

We had excellent news from our seller about the new house needing a roof and some repairs due to the two leaks the inspector found.  The seller said to get the bids, pick one and reduce the price of the house to compensate.  Praise God!!  It was more than we expected and we feel so blessed!  We have one bid and will have two more sometime today or tomorrow.  Hoping to be able to close on the house later this week, or early next week!  Then we can get some cleaning done, get our once-a-year bug guys in and start moving things over that we don't trust the movers with.

The roofer is supposed to get started on our roof this week (current house). The buyers picked the shingles they want and they came by on Saturday to measure outside for a shed to put their riding mower in.  Things are moving along nicely here too. Praise God again!

All of this would be so much easier if we were just 10 years younger.  But it will get done and we are happy and excited.

I heard from my sister, Patti, that our niece got some nice recognition at Ohio University. I did post it on Facebook, so some of you have seen this already.  She made the Sigma Alpha Pi Honor Society and this....

 Very proud of her!!

We did make it to Mass on Saturday evening (4:00 Vigil) and then used one of our Christmas gift cards to go out to dinner. It was funny that two tables next to us were also people from our church!  We might as well have sat together because we were chatting anyway!

I thank you for stopping by today!  Wishing you a good week ahead!!  Peace & hugs!

Sunday Stealing....

Thanks to Bud for this week's Sunday Stealing!!  Click THIS LINK to join the fun!

The Icebreaker Questions

Welcome back to Sunday Stealing which originated on WTIT: The Blog authored by Bud Weiser. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. You may have heard the expression, “honor among thieves”. In that age-old tradition, we try to credit the blog that we stole it from. We also provide a link to the victim's questions in our "Previous Victims" widget. (It's our way of saying "Thanks!") Sometimes we edit the original meme, to make it more relevant to our global players, to challenge our players, to select the best questions, or simply to make it less repetitive from recently asked questions from a previously post.

We believe she's the author, but...
It is hard to say where we got these questions. They are from a martial arts site and we think are meant for questions to ask your opponents when you meet. We “think” because most of the site is in French. Also, you’d never ask any of the original questions to someone that you just met. Those questions (i.e. What celebrity would you like a threesome with?) were not what we’d ask someone when we met. But there were 50 questions that we both stole and edited to become today’s massive event. We got the title from the original site. Oh, and feel free to answer the threesome question. And leave the question out for others to read. They will never look at you quite the same way ever again.

Cheers to all of us thieves!

Sunday Stealing: The Icebreaker Questions

1. Are you loud, outgoing or shy?  Not really shy, but usually more quiet than loud or outgoing.

2. What’s coming up where you’ll see an old friend?  I saw an old friend at church last night. Hadn't seen her and her husband in months and months.

3. Are you easy to get along with?  I sure like to think so.

4. Have you ever given up on someone, but then gone back to them?  Yes.

5. Who was the last person that you had a deep conversation with?  Joe. We've had LOTS to discuss lately with the move and all that entails.

6. Are you okay with being in a big crowd?  I'm not phobic, I just hate being in a crowd.

7. Do you believe in luck and/or miracles?  I believe more in miracles than luck, but I do believe some folks are lucky to be in the right place at the right time (for instance).

8. What good thing happened during the summer?  (It’s good to think about summer when you are freezing your butt off in January.)  Every day is good, summer, winter, fall or spring.

9. Do you think there is life on other planets?  Yes, I do.

10. Who was your first crush on?  Doug Pillows in 4th grade.  He had buck teeth and I thought he was cute.

11. What are your bad habits?  I am impatient in the car. Not so that I am dangerous, but it does aggravate Joe when I get upset and voice my opinion of other drivers. It's a habit I need to break.

12. What’s your favorite part of your daily routine?  Getting home from work!

13. Other than your significant other, who are you most comfortable with?  My sisters.

14. Has an ex ever told you that they regret breaking up?  Yes.

15. Why should your celebrity crush drop everything to be with you?  I don't have a celebrity crush. I still have a big crush on my Joe, though!!

16. What would be the hardest to give up and why? Books. TV. Music.  Books. Books allow us to imagine what people and places look like (don't need TV) and words ARE music!!

17. Do you believe in second chances?  Yes.

18. What would like to do next in your life?  I don't believe in reincarnation.

19. What’s the meanest thing that anyone has ever said to you?  My ex said some very mean things to me and I won't repeat any of it here. That was a long, long time ago.

20. What’s the nicest thing that anyone has ever said to you?  I've been blessed with good people in my life, both personal and professional. I've been blessed to have made a difference here and there and have been appreciated for it.

Thank you for playing this week on Sunday Stealing! Please leave a comment or link when you have posted. Stop back and visit other player’s posts. That is really what this is all about, making new friends! Have a great week. See you next Sunday!
Peace & love-
Bud

I did get the dining room sorted yesterday and quite a few things put aside for our garage sale. Today I will be boxing up what we are keeping. Good golly...I have a "thing" about platters and bowls. How many platters and bowls does one woman need? Evidently dozens. Sigh.

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs!!

Saturday 9....

Thanks to Sam Winters for this week's Saturday 9!  Visit HERE and link up for some fun!

A Summer Place

Welcome to Saturday: 9.

Saturday 9: A Summer Place (1960)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song highlights the soundtrack from the movie A Summer Place, which is about two teenage lovers named Molly and Johnny. Did you ever have a youthful summer romance? If so, what was his/her name?  I had a crush on an upperclassman when I was a freshman in high school.  Since this is about summer, I also had a crush on another upperclassman when I was working at the ice cream parlor.  I'm not naming names, though! LOL

2) The "summer place" of the song/movie is a resort along the Maine coast. What "summer place" are you day dreaming about this winter morning?  I don't have to dream about a summer place in the winter. I live in Florida! It is 80° today.

3) In the movie, Johnny was played by Troy Donahue, who is remembered as nice looking but not terribly talented. Can you think of one of today's actors who you could describe as "nice looking but not terribly talented?"  Seriously, I just don't pay that much attention to Hollywood and actors.

4) Molly is played by Sandra Dee, a perky blonde who was one of 1960's bankable movie stars. Two other blondes -- Doris Day and Debbie Reynolds -- joined Sandra Dee in the Top 10. The only brunette to sell a lot of movie tickets that year was Elizabeth Taylor. Do you believe men find blondes more attractive than brunettes or redheads?  Since I've always been a blonde (until I turned gray) I don't think men found me more or less attractive because of my hair.

5) "A Summer Place" was by far the best-selling record of 1960. Also in 1960, two brothers in Ypsilanti, Michigan, opened a pizza place called Dominck's. That was the beginning of a chain now known as Domino's. What's the last food you had delivered to your front door?   Pizza is the only food we can have delivered here in Lakeland (other than Jimmy John's subs), so pizza is my answer.

6) In 1965, one of the brothers sold his share of the business to his brother for cash so he could buy a VW Beetle. Tell us about a time you had buyer's remorse.  I'm beginning to wonder about buying a new house! Ha!  I guess buyer's remorse would have to be over a pair of slacks that fit okay at the store but ended up being uncomfortable when I wore them. Should have taken them back....

7) In 1960, novelist Ernest Hemingway returned to the United States from Spain and settled in Ketchum, Idaho. Tell us about the last book you read. Was it a novel or non-fiction?  I always read novels. Not much into non-fiction since I read solely for entertainment and escapism.

8) In December 1960, John F. Kennedy, Jr. was baptized in theGeorgetown University Chapel. His godparents were Charles and Martha Bartlett, the couple who originally introduced young John's famous parents. Do you have godparents?  No. I was baptized in the Presbyterian church and raised Methodist.  When I converted to Catholicism, Joe was my 'sponsor' but I did not have Godparents.

9) Random question: You're at dinner with a married couple who begins to fight. Would you intercede and try to make peace? Or would you just sit back stay out of it?  I might try to make a joke if I could, but basically I would probably sit back and let them have at it. I might also excuse myself for a trip to the restroom (and invite "her" to go with me). Embarrassing.

Thanks for your visit today!  Picture me cleaning out and packing the dining room. I have to finish it this weekend!  Peace & hugs!

Friday Foto Friends....

I am linking up with Deb, over at Breathing in Grace, for Friday Foto Friends!

The day many of us have been waiting for is here!  My first shared 'foto' is from the internet...

Praying for a peaceful inauguration and transition.

Y'all know I have been cleaning out and sorting through old photos.  Here are a few of the oldies I found:

This is my dad's mom and my Granny Kelly.  She was 18 years old in this photo.

Sorry for the glare and reflection. This one is in a frame but I snapped it anyway.
Joe's parents' wedding photo. Nicola and Julie D'Orsaneo

My first cousin's boys. Scott, Todd, Darin and Mike.
This was a long time ago. They are all married with children and are even Grandpas!
I sure remember them at this age, though,  The youngest, Mike, is a firefighter in Ohio.

Our oldest son, Joey, was in a band during college and for a few years after.
That's him in the center of this promotional photo, playing drums.
The band was called Inside Out.  They had a local following in the DC area.

It is strawberry time in Florida.  I cleaned and sliced this batch on Sunday.
They are almost gone. So sweet and delicious!
We will have fresh strawberries from now into the first part of March. Yum!

Thankful it is Friday!  I need to kick this old body into gear and get some work done this weekend! No updates yet on new roofs or closing dates.  I'll keep you posted!  Thanks for visiting!  Peace & hugs!

Thankful Thursday....

Linking up with Rebecca Jo, over at Knit by God's Hand, for Thankful Thursday!

* Thankful that I had yesterday off from work so I could be at the new house for the inspection.  The inspector, Rick, was great.

* Thankful that the people who purchased and set-up the new house back in 2002 had the foresight to do strong hurricane anchors and stabilizers. The inspector was impressed.

* Thankful that the AC/Heat, the dishwasher, the refrigerator, the stove, and microwave all worked and that we had hot water. All the toilets flushed and all the faucets worked without leaks!

* Thankful that the inspector found a leak in the roof that has caused some damage that needs to be addressed.  We have alerted the property manager to inform the seller and we are hoping he agrees to doing the repairs.  Like she said...he will have to do the repairs anyway, for any other buyer, so he might as well do it now. Fingers crossed.  We are already putting a roof on this house (sharing the cost).

This move is beginning to get very expensive. Praying, praying, praying.

That's all I have for now.  Thanks for your visit!! Peace & hugs.

The Hodgepodge is Back (and so is Joyce!)....

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 293

Hello Hodgepodgers and welcome back! Not sure if I'm coming or going this month (mostly both!) but I'm here today with this week's questions. Answer on your own blog, then fly back here tomorrow to add your link to the party. Here we go-

1. ASAP typically stands for 'as soon as possible. What else could it stand for in your life right now?  Ha! How about As Slowly As Possible because that's how our sorting and packing projects are going!  Gotta kick it into gear!

2. Are you the last person to speak up in a group or the first to have an idea?  Depends on where, when, and what.  Why do you suppose that is?  I know where my strengths and weaknesses are and am happy to rely on others if it is a weak area for me.  Is it a good thing or no?  I hope it's a good thing!

3. What do you remember best about being 12?  I discovered The Rolling Stones and the Beatles.  Loved the Stones...wasn't that into the Beatles.

4. January 18th is National Winnie the Pooh Day. Which character do you relate to the most, and why?  The Quiz says I'm Owl.  I am not that familiar with Winnie the Pooh. If you're stumped go here for inspiration. Thanks for the quiz, or I would not have know how to answer this one!

5. What's an app you use that helps simplify or make life easier for you in some way?  Waze when we are on the road. Gives us gas info, traffic info, alternate routes, etc.

6. San Francisco (CA), San Diego (CA), San Juan (PR) San Antonio (TX) Sanibel (FL)...you have an all expenses paid long weekend to one of these destinations. Which one do you choose and why?  San Juan, I guess. I've been to Sanibel, have no interest in California and there are other places I'd rather go in Texas than San Antonio (like Waco and Dallas).

7. Share with us a song that makes you feel nostalgic?   In A Godda Da Vita  For what?  That's the first song I ever danced to under strobe lights. It always brings back a carefree time in life and makes me want to dance under strobe lights again!  1968.... Does anyone else remember Iron Butterfly?  I was too young to drink, so no alcohol was involved!  Awesome drum solo!!

8.  Insert your own random thought here. I have the day off because we have the inspection of our new home today.  I wanted to be there too.  Joe could handle it, but sometimes he doesn't always hear properly (because he doesn't wear his hearing aid!). I thought it best to add my ears to his....AND I just wanted to go inside the house again!

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs!

Tuesday Tidbits (Throwback)....

A few of you asked about the tribute to my mom after I mentioned it a couple of days ago.  I had to get it converted from a PDF file to a Word document so I could copy it here. I tried to fix the transfer errors I found, but forgive me if something jumps out at you. Pat Abrams made no spelling or grammatical errors in the original document.  Pat is no longer with us in this world either.  I'm sure she and Mom are part of one of the Heavenly choirs now.

Note that the talk about moving to Florida is about my folks becoming Snowbirds.  They spent six months in Florida and six months back in Ohio, where they had downsized from the house mentioned in this tribute (picture below).

My mom was loved by all who knew her. She was a role model for many, including her children. None of us, myself included, could ever measure up, but I've told people many times that if I could just be half the woman my mom was, I would be content.  This tribute tells you who she was.

A Tribute to Helen Kelly
by Pat Abrams
at her Memorial Service January 3, 1996

Millersport United Methodist Church, Tom Keene, Pastor

For Christmas, I received a 1996 friendship calendar. It began with these words: A friend is a gift whose worth cannot be measured except by the heart. That's how I feel about Helen Kelly.

Very rarely in life comes that one who truly impacts us and is the catalyst for change which lasts a lifetime. Helen was my life-changer. ·

She changed my life's work and my ministry. It was Helen who was secretary at Millersport United Methodist before I was. She had recognized the great need for secretarial help for the pastor and had stepped in to help Merle Walter.

ln 1984 Pastor Tom and Sheri and their family came to us. Helen remained secretary. The latter part of that year Orlyn had retired and Florida beckoned. Helen was looking for someone to fill in for her while she was gone. Dr. Anna Whetstone suggested that I apply for that position.

I was apprehensive but did apply. Frankly, there weren't too many applicants at the time! Helen graciously welcomed me into her office and was warm and accepting. Her honest humility captured my heart right away.

Within a very short time, Orlyn convinced her that life in Florida was the life for them, and she handed the reins of the secretarial position over to me. I vowed then that I would do everything I could to continue what she had so capably started. Who would have thought that 11 years later I'd still be on the job?

She changed my personal life as well. Al and I were looking for a place to live and our efforts had come to a dead stop when out of the blue Helen called and asked if we would be interested in renting their home. Would we! It was soon a done deal, and we moved into the home where they had reared their children, where Orlyn had poured hundreds of hours of hard work remodeling, where everyone surrounding them had known that if you wanted the perfect example of old-fashioned neighborliness, it was to be found at the Kelly's. A tough act to follow!

A couple of years later Al and I received another call from Helen. Would we be interested in buying the home we were renting from them?  Boy, were we interested . . . but we honestly didn't know how we could swing it.

Because of the kindness, trust, and absolute unselfishness of Orlyn and Helen, we were able to buy that house. Even today out front is the ivy that Helen started from a slip that she had brought from their prior home so many years ago. The beautiful evergreen tree on one side of the front yard is gone, a victim of disease, and the other one will probably leave us this year. But every time I look at the pine cones I collected from those trees I will remember a caring, close knit family whose wife and mother was named Helen Kelly.

Perhaps the deepest change in my life brought about by Helen was my relationship with the Lord. She taught me by example about the faith like that of a child, the kind without which, Jesus said, no one could enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

In her, I saw genuineness. I saw unselfishness. I saw kindness beyond anyone I had ever known. She absolutely lived what she believed, and she probably did more for the cause of Jesus Christ in her humble, sincere, warm way that I could ever accomplish in my lifetime.

It was Helen who was my sponsor on the Emmaus Walk. On the wall in my study at home are the words: Sisterhood, Accountability, and Remembrance. I brought those home with me from Emmaus. But when all was said and done, even these things paled in my heart in comparison to Helen herself. I realized that people like me, who oftentimes are in a position to be seen, don't hold a candle to the Helen Kelly's of this world. And I told her so.

Also on the wall of my study there is a sheet which reads: Grace: receiving what we don't deserve . . . Mercy: not receiving what we do deserve. Helen told me that. In those two thoughts lie the basis of everything she believed in, and they are mine as well.

After Emmaus, we rode back and forth to Peace United Methodist Church in Pickerington for our Emmaus Share Group. I will treasure those rides as long as I live. We talked about a lot of things, and Helen was a constant source of delight as we discussed being Christian mothers and grandmothers.

But the thing I will remember most is what happened when her cancer reappeared. I felt like I had been kicked in the stomach when she told me. Instantly my mind reeled with thoughts like, "Why Helen, Lord? She doesn't deserve this! It's so unfair!"

We all know life isn’t fair and Christians aren't exempt from suffering and pain. Helen and I talked about that. She said to me, "Of course I'd like to stay around to see my grandchildren grow up. But the Lord always knows best, and if He allows this cancer to spread, I'll be perfectly content to go home to be with Him earlier. I know He'll take care of my family." No fear. No resentment. No clench-fisted resigning. Just absolute trust.

And I can't fail to mention the wonderful times we shared together as members of the church choir and the women's ensemble. When I knew she was in town, hers was the first face I looked for when I went to choir practice.

That is the essence of Helen Kelly to me. In every sense she was a treasure sent into my life by our loving Lord. I will miss her terribly. Yet even as I speak those words there wells up within my spirit the sure hope that I will see her again. She did not live in vain. She made a difference in Jesus' Name everywhere she went. Who knows how far the ripples of her influence will flow?

If I were a child again, I would say, "When I grow up, I want to be just like Helen Kelly."

-------------------------------------------

And the tears are flowing again as I post this. Mom was my age when she died. My age right now. It hits home even more when I think about that. We lost her much too soon and I will always miss her.

Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!!

Weekend Recap on Monday...

We had a good weekend. It could have been more productive, but things got done that had to get done.

Joe worked hard in the garage, sorting his tools and choosing what he wants to keep, what to put in the garage sale and what our sons may want.  He has three or four of most everything. We brought his tools with us when we moved, then my dad died and Mom gave Joe the tools he had in their Florida place, then my grandpa died and Joe got all of those tools too. The garage has been well stocked for over 20 years.

I spent way too much time sorting through family history information that I obtained long before computers.  Back in the 70s I paid a couple of Genealogists to do research for me in other states.  Lots of handwritten and typewritten documents and letters. I scanned in those that I didn't want to lose, then filled a box to be shredded.  Over 250 pages scanned. It took a few hours.

The big trouble came when Joe uncovered a box full of slides (8 carousels!) that were mine from "my other life" back in the 1970s.  Most of them I didn't bother looking at....vacations with my ex-husband. But there were a bunch of family events and visits that I had to look at.  THEN...I tried taking a photo of the slide with a back-light.  It worked!!  I was so excited!  I saved a bunch that way!

My sister, Patti's high school graduation and all three of our grandmas!
I've mentioned how blessed we were to grow up with three sets of grandparents, and that they got along, making holidays and special events so much nicer when we could all be together.  Well, here they are...Mom's mom, my sister, Dad's mom, and step-Grandma (who just died last year).

I've mentioned that I love dogs too, even though we have cats now.  This was my collie, Sargeant Pepper.  Sarge was the sweetest 80-pound dog.  This photo is of us on a Lake Erie beach.  It was obviously very cold!!  I did grow up in Ohio!

A family photo, probably spring of 1971.
My brother, Randy, My mom and dad, me,
then front row - Tammy and Patti

I also found some relics that I had kept for years.  Special sweet things that made me smile.  My dad traveled a good bit for work when I was younger.  This is a postcard he sent to me.  I was four or five years old when I got this in the mail....just for me! His nickname for me was Towhead.

It says:  Hi Tow-head,  This looks so much like you I thought you had beat me down here (Clearwater, FL). Help mother take care of brother and don't let him bite you!  See you next week. Love Dad

Speaking of Dad, this is him with his plane. I think it is the one he took my mom up for a ride in, on their first date!

As you can see, this is just a few of the things I had to look at and make decisions about. Thank goodness for digital options these days!!  I scanned and photographed the day away!  Now...on to that dining room I've been neglecting.

Thanks for your visit!!  Happy Monday.  Peace & hugs.
