NATIONAL PARCHMENT DAY
At the end of June, National Parchment Day arrives to bring innovation and convenience back to the kitchen.
Parchment infuses flavor, locks in moisture and preserves vital nutrients and has long been a part of the traditional French kitchen. Ever versatile, parchment conveniently transitions from skillet to oven and from the grill to table. Its ability to be elegant as well as useful makes it one of the more effective tools in the kitchen.
Cooking “en papillote” enhances natural flavors, without the synthetic sprays and high-fat oils. Not only does culinary parchment simplify preparation and clean-up, but it’s also a much healthier and environmentally friendlier alternative to traditional cooking techniques. The French have cooked with parchment for centuries, perfecting taste and texture in every dish. It has long served as the secret to preparing wholesome, healthy meals.
With all these added benefits, it’s difficult to ignore what parchment brings to the kitchen and to the table. Use a variety of parchment products to make composing delicious meals in the home kitchen a culinary success.

HISTORY

National Parchment Day was submitted by
PaperChef and declared by the Registrar of National Day Calendar in June 2016. With local food movements on the rise, PaperChef is encouraging all culinary enthusiasts – from professional chefs to home cooks – to explore foods that mirror the “farm to fork movement,” offering North Americans viable alternatives to their popular but non-compostable and non-recyclable counterparts, refusing to compromise on quality and integrity by manufacturing items that won’t live in landfills for centuries.

1. Who knew there was a day to celebrate parchment paper?! Do you ever use parchment when you bake or cook? Sometimes. Tell us about your favorite way to use it, please. If a recipe calls for parchment, I will use it, but I've not been as creative as I could be with it. My friend, Luisa, uses it to make steaming pockets for fish and veggies. They are delicious. I've not tried it yet, however.
2. When Terri thinks of parchment paper, she usually thinks about special writing or artist papers. She loves using specialty papers for creating cards or other art projects. Tell us about a creative way you have used parchment paper other than to bake with! Parchment or any aged heavy paper just feels good and makes me want to create art in some form.

3. Terri used to be in the cake business and has piped many borders and roses and leaves and letters, etc., etc. You can make a pastry bag from parchment paper! Have you ever tried decorating a cake with a pastry bag and specialty tips? Do you have a picture to share? Don't be shy, now! I do use the pre-cut parchment to make pastry bags. Wilton has them ready to roll and use. When I had my little cake business, back in the early 90s, I did lots of cakes, all in buttercream. I never used fondant like they do today. I did lots of stairways with painted dolls on the steps and fountains under the tiers for weddings. Here are a few photos of photos I will share... I did that for four years and was so worn out and sick of icing that it was a few years before I would make another cake for anyone. LOL
The bride sent me this photo after the fresh flowers were added.
4. Tell us about something you baked or cooked in the past week or so that turned out great, parchment or no parchment. Will you share the recipe? The best meal I cooked while my sister was here was the steaks on the grill (well, that was Joe) and the salad, baked potatoes, and broccoli. The steaks were delicious!
5. The last Wednesday in June!! How can that be? Has your June flown by or have you been able to enjoy each day and make it slow down for you? June has flown by, just like all the months, weeks, days.... time is going much too fast.
6. Tell us something about your week so far, if you will. I haven't written about it yet, but my lunch-bunch girls are now minus one. Our dear friend Melody passed away last weekend. The cancer she had been fighting for years had beat her down so far that she ended up with double pneumonia and blood clots in her lungs. Her daughter, Tammy, called me in tears because she couldn't get there soon enough to see her mom before she died. I am heartbroken for her, especially. This was our last lunch with her. She hasn't been well enough to drive down the last few times we all got together. She and her hubby live nearly three hours away.
Shirley, me, Cindee, and Melody (Terry and Heather weren't with us this time.)
Tammy asked for memorials on Facebook since her mom didn't want a funeral or a memorial. This is what I wrote along with the above picture.
Melody was a dear friend of many years. We worked together at the museum and continued our friendship after she left there and began her many health struggles. She was one of our lunch-bunch friends and we sure have missed her these past months when she couldn't drive down to join us. She never wanted us to drive up her way but instead would rather come down to Lakeland. I will miss her loving heart and sense of humor. Rest in peace, my dear friend.
