Saturday:9....THRILLER!!

Sam picked a good one for Halloween! I always liked Michael Jackson, and this was one of my favorites.  Check out the Saturday:9  HERE  and join in the fun.  Thanks Sam!!

Thriller

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Thriller (1983)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this video, Michael Jackson is transformed into a "werecat," with fangs, claws, yellow eyes and whiskers. What  monster or ghoul frightened you the most?  When I was a child, I was terrified of Vampires!  Loved the movies, but put my cross necklace on to wear to bed to protect me from being bitten!  I was sure they were real.

2) Michael sings that evil things that will be lurking "close to midnight." Where will you be at midnight tonight?  In bed, sound asleep....even on a Friday night!!

3) Horror movie icon Vincent Price does the voice over on "Thriller." What's your favorite scary movie?  I don't actually have a favorite, but I do like the old black and white movies about Frankenstein, vampires and werewolves.  Growing up, there was a local TV station (Columbus, Ohio) that ran "Chiller Theater" every Friday night.  It was a must for slumber parties.

4) Mr. Price's House of Wax, made in 1953, was one of the first 3D movies. What's the most recent 3D movie you saw?  The only 3D movie I've ever seen was Jaws 3D, back in 1983.

5) Horror fans might be surprised to know that, despite his sinister image, Mr. Price enjoyed very genteel and relaxing hobbies, like cooking, gardening and painting. What would we be surprised to learn about you?  If you follow my blog, there won't be any surprise anything about me! LOL   I did see Mr. Price live, on stage (years and years ago), in a production of Oliver. He played Fagin and was GREAT. He even had a good singing voice.

6) A Halloween tradition is the jack-o-lantern. Did you carve a pumpkin this year?  I haven't carved a pumpkin in years and years.

7) According to Yahoo!, the most popular costume of Halloween 2014 was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. Will you be in costume this Halloween?  Nope!  If not, who or what would you most like to dress up as?  How about my Peanuts Character selfie....

8) When you went trick or treating as a kid, did you usually wear a store-bought costume, or was it DIY? When I was really young, my mom bought costumes for me and my brother - and I hated the hard plastic masks that you couldn't breath in or see out of.  Later in life, before I was really too old to go begging, I used my own clothing and make-up.

9) When trick-or-treaters show up at your door, what candy will they get?  Nothing. We quit handing out candy 5-6 years ago.  The light stays off and if someone rings the bell, we ignore it.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

Wishing you a good Saturday!!  Thanks for stopping by my Saturday:9!  Peace & hugs.

All About Halloween and Black Cats....

I have had three black cats and they still hold such a special place in my heart.  Inky was my pillow pal. Cookie was the absolute sweetest cat.  Onyx was my feline soul mate.  I was interested in how black cats came to be associated with Halloween, so did a little Google research.  None of our cats are allowed outside, other than in our screened pool area. We made them come in the house on Halloween, just the same.  Some people are just not to be trusted.  I found this article, which I am copying here:
=============================

How Black Cats Came To Halloween

Black cats are a classic Halloween symbol, but how did their special place in the fall come to be?

Black cats have long served as objects of superstition. In Medieval France and Spain, black cats were considered bringers of bad luck and curses to any human they came near, and were associated with witchcraft. Many Medieval Germans believed themselves to be cursed if a black cat crossed their path from left to right. Black cats, however, have also served as symbols of good luck in numerous cultures. In the British Islands, black cats are often believed to bring affluence to any house they occupied. In Japan, they are also considered to bring good luck. In Ancient Egypt, black cats were worshipped as sacred.

How did black cats come to represent bad luck and spookiness in the United States? It all started with the Pilgrims in the Plymouth colony. The Puritan Pilgrims distrusted anything associated with witches and sorcery, including black cats. They actively persecuted black cats – it became a practice to burn black cats on Shrove Tuesday to protect the home from fire. After the anti-witch zeal had subsided in the colonies, black cats had been thoroughly cemented in popular legend right alongside witches. Decorators use them as a Halloween symbol, both alongside witches and independently, to add a frightful, unnerving ambience to their front steps, their green eyes spooking trick-or-treaters.

But if you’re really feeling the holiday spirit this Halloween, consider adopting a black cat from an animal shelter or rescue service. Due to latent superstition, studies have shown that black cats are much less likely to be adopted compared with other fur colors. By adopting a black cat, you may rescue an animal who may otherwise not have found a loving owner. However, some shelters will not adopt-out a black cat immediately before Halloween. Some owners have been known to use them as “living decorations” before abandoning them.

So I went a little crazy with the images, but they are all so cute!  Are you dressing up for a party this year, or do you dress up to hand out treats to the little ones?  I've never been to a costume party and we don't hand out candy anymore.  Bah humbug to Halloween.

If I wanted to dress up, I would go with my Peanuts character costume.  I had so much fun creating myself as a Peanuts character.....

Create your own image as a Peanuts character HERE!!  Have fun!

Just a reminder that prayer requests can be left in a comment on my Prayer & Praise tab. I am pleased to add your needs to my daily prayers. God bless!!

Happy Friday to you, and thanks for stopping by my blog today!  Peace & hugs.

Throwback Thursday....

Eliza Jane (Robuck) and James B. Dement.  These are my Great-Great Grandparents, on my mom's side of the family.  My grandmother was raised by her grandmother, Eliza Jane.  She freely admitted to being very spoiled. She even had one of the first radios in town.

Eliza Jane's mother was Sarah Cindilla Mahaffey and it is through her line that I belong to the Daughter's of the American Revolution (DAR).  John Mahaffey, my Revolutionary Soldier Ancestor, was Sarah's grandfather.

I really enjoy researching family history and only wish I had more time to devote to it.  Have you done any family history research?

Thanks for stopping by today!  Wishing you a good Thursday (Friday Eve!!),  Peace & hugs.

The Last October Hodgepodge....

Joyce, From This Side of the Pond, gives us a Hodgepodge of questions every Wednesday. We answer and link up with all the other Hodgepodgers!  Join in the fun!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 241

Here are the questions for this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog, then hop back here tomorrow to share answers with the universe. See you there!

1. Are you comfortable with silence?
Yes and sometimes I crave it.  If you're home alone, do you like silence or do you need regular background noise?  It just depends on the time of day and my mood.  Do you seek out times and places to be silent?  No, not really.  What's your favorite place to find silence/be silent?  In the kitchen, early morning before heading out to work.

2. October 28th is National Chocolate Day. Can't let that go by without a mention now, can we? Will you celebrate?  No.  How? Let's say you can have one of the following right this very minute... a cup of hot chocolate, a strawberry dipped in chocolate, a bowl of plain chocolate ice cream, or a slice of chocolate pie...what's your pleasure?  Plain chocolate ice cream, thank you very much.

3. How do you feel about blue jeans?  Love them. Favorite thing in the world to wear or nope, don't own a single pair?  Favorite thing to wear, definitely.  How often do you wear blue jeans in a typical week?  All weekend, except I don't wear jeans to church.  We can wear them to work and I do on occasion.  Do you own a blue jean jacket?  I don't, but Joe does. I really want one.

4. Are you superstitious?  Not even a little.  If so, in what way?

5. If you had to come up with a costume using only things you have on hand right now, what could you come up with?  I could be a hippy.  I have jeans, sandals and a t-shirt with peace signs (thanks for the gift, Teena - still have it and love it!).

6. What scares you a little?  Public speaking scares me a lot.  What do you do when you feel scared?  Pray, talk to myself....

7. Perhaps today will be the day I stick to my diet this week.  I've been very, very bad.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  I start another round of injections in my knees tomorrow.  Once a week for three weeks.  It really helped me this last time so I'm hoping it continues to help. I can get the injections every six months. Fingers crossed!

Tuesday Tidbit....

I have mentioned on several blogs that I really miss apple orchards in the Fall. My favorite apple is the Cortland and I can never find them down here in Florida......until last weekend!!

Look what I found at Publix!!  This bag is almost gone and I think another one will be on my shopping list before the week is out.  They aren't as good as the ones I get right from the orchard, but they are good and this girl is apple-happy!!

Thanks for your visit today!  Peace & hugs.

Weekend Update on Monday....

We had a good weekend. Saturday morning, we got up and headed downtown for the Farmers' Market and the annual garden show in our lovely Munn Park.  There were to be 40-50 vendors there with plants and garden-related items.

Months ago we tore out all of the shrubs and plants from the front of our house, to make it easier to paint the house. If you follow my posts, you know that I don't like yard work, have no luck nor interest in plants and that I actually got used to the bare look in our yard. Just to clarify, I DO like the yard to look nice and I love seeing how beautiful other people's yards are. I just don't want to have to do anything in the yard. The red, white and blue windsock has been decoration enough for me!

Many of you are covering plants or watching them die as winter approaches.  This is perfect weather for us to be planting! It isn't horribly hot and we are still in the rainy season.

We walked through the Farmers' Market first, then walked through the garden show.

We found some plants we liked and approached the owner of 3 Seasons Growers.  We showed him the picture of our bare bed (above) and asked if he could help us.  He took out a piece of paper, sketched in a plan and then showed us the plants he thought we needed.  We were amazed at how fast he solved our problem. We accepted his suggestions, paid him and went to get the car. When we made it back, he had all of the plants sitting by the curb and helped us load them, then offered to answer any questions we might have. His business is in the next town over from us, called Plant City. Seriously, Plant City.

When we got home, we unloaded the plants and placed them as indicated on the diagram he drew for us.

Please don't ask what kind of plants we got. I don't remember what they are called and really don't care. I just want them to grow well, fill out and look nice. His diagram had abbreviations on it, so I don't have the full names.  Ti.... Cal.... and Orange... then there is Blue something and some kind of lily something.

We worked Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning to get them all planted.  Poor Joe had to do most of the work since I can't get down on my knees. I was the go-for and the picker-upper.

Now we just have to water them every day for a week, then just a couple of times a week for awhile. I think it will all look quite nice once we get the new mulch added and the plants take hold and start growing in.  I'll share another picture when we get the mulch, in a week or so.

Our big project is nearly done and it feels good. I wish you a good week ahead, and thank you for stopping by today!  Peace & hugs.

Sometimes we edit the original meme, to make it more relevant to our global players, to challenge our players, to select the best questions, or simply to make it less repetitive from this new meme or recently asked questions from a previously featured meme.
Cheers to all of us thieves!!!

Saturday:9 Don't Come Easy....

Thanks to Samantha for another Saturday:9!  Join in the fun by visiting HERE!!

It Don't Come Easy

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: It Don't Come Easy (1971)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This was Ringo's first big hit as a solo artist. Who is your favorite member of his old, very famous group, The Beatles?  John Lennon, but I've never been a Beatles fan.

2) In this song, Ringo sings that you have to pay your dues. Do you belong to any organizations that require you to pay dues?  Yes, several.

3) He also sings, "you don't have to shout." When did you last raise your voice?  Probably driving in the car yesterday morning....too bad that other crazy driver couldn't hear me!

4) Ringo has two piercings on each ear and one tattoo on each arm. Do you have more piercings or body art?  One hole in each earlobe. That's it.

5) Ringo gave his first wife, Maureen, a one-of-a-kind birthday gift. Frank Sinatra made a recording of "The Lady Is a Tramp" personalized to her. Tell us about one of your most memorable birthday celebrations.  I threw myself a 60th birthday party (almost four years ago).  Fifty-six friends came by during the open house. I had baked ziti, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, red velvet cupcakes and salad.  Did all the cooking and baking myself. Best birthday ever!

6) Ringo appeared as Mr. Conductor on Thomas the Tank Engine. He recorded the narration for the entire first season in just a week. Tell us what you did last week.   I worked every day and relaxed with Joe each evening.  Same old, same old.

7) Ringo also did the narration for Ladybird children's books. Do you like audiobooks?  No.  I get off track and have to back-track too often. Waste of time for me, though I know many people love them.

8) As a boy in Liverpool, Ringo loved watching American westerns. His passion for the genre is reflected in the outfit he's wearing on the sleeve for "It Don't Come Easy." Do you like cowboy movies/shows?  Some are okay, but they are not my first choice.

9) You know what else don't come easy? Nine questions every week. Crazy Sam has heard it all: this meme asks too many movie questions, too many questions about sports, too many questions that sound familiar ...  OK, now it's your turn. Help a tired meme mistress out. Contribute a random question that is not about movies or sports (pro or collegiate) and has never been asked before on this meme. Sam will compile these for an all-random Saturday 9 in November. That way she'll get a much-appreciated week off. Thanks for your help!

When was the last time you went out dancing and what kind of music was playing?

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks for your visit today!  Wishing you a great Saturday!  Peace & hugs.

New Glasses!

I finally got my new glasses!  I love them, but am still getting used to having a new look.

I am NOT photogenic.  I had a coworker take my picture (actually there were about 10 of them) and picked this one to share.  It was not a good curly hair day, but most days are not good curly hair days. As you can see, I have quit coloring and am "natural" now. Being gray does have some advantages. No one asks if I want the senior discount.  They just give it to me!  LOL

The following photo shows my "old" glasses and was a professional shot at our Gala event last year. You can see the difference in glasses (and in how a professional can make you look so much better!). The gray was starting to come through as the color grew out, too.

Note that my profile photo, on this page, was taken before my "old" glasses, so it was at least 3-4 years ago!  Those are my "old old" glasses and I still had blondish hair.  LOL

The glasses are bigger than my last ones and fit my face much better. They are a burgundy color, as were my old ones.  So, there you have it.  All my silliness about being so excited for new glasses!!

Joe and I have plans to go to our Downtown Farmers' Market in the morning because they are also having a garden show with 45-50 plant vendors.  Hoping to find something to make our front yard look like someone cares again.  Whatever we get has to be draught proof, freeze proof and like being totally ignored. I refuse to cover plants with sheets and blankets the three or four nights we might get down to 30° in February.  We also don't run our sprinklers (even though we have an in-ground sprinkler system). We let mother nature take care of plants.  Enough said.

Also downtown tomorrow is the annual Hispanic Festival.  We didn't go last year but have in previous years. The food is pretty amazing.  Might have to get lunch while we are in the vicinity.

Wishing you a good weekend!!  Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!

Back to the Future Hodgepodge!!

Joyce gives us the great questions and we give the answers.  Link up on her page to share the fun!  Thank you, Joyce!!

Here are the questions to this week's Wednesday Hodgepodge. Answer on your own blog, then hop back here (on Wednesday) and add your link to the random. Here ya go-
1. October 21, 2015 is Back to the Future Day.  Did you see the movie?  Yes.  The sequels? Yes. Love them, actually. Great fun!  In the second film, Doc takes Marty into the future to prevent Marty's future son from making a mistake. They leave 1985 and land on a 'skyway' on October 21st, 2015. So tell us, what were you doing in the fall of 1985?  Joe and I got married in May of 1985 and that Fall, I fell and broke my wrist in 7 places. I cooked our first Thanksgiving dinner, as husband and wife (we also had guests - there were 10 of us, I think), with a cast on my left arm.  I think it was off by Christmas.

2.  If time travel were possible, would you want to go to the future? No. The past? Yes, I think it would be great to be able to go back in time and if not meet my ancestors, to at least observe them.  I don't want to know what's coming, but I would enjoy the history.

3. We're not flying cars, but some of the technology imagined in the 80's film has indeed come to pass in real life 2015-flat screen TVs on the wall, tablets, fingerprint recognition, video conferencing, online banking, 3-D movies, motion-controlled video games, drone cameras, and smart glasses (Google glass).  Do you worry technology is growing at a rate so fast we'll soon be unable to keep up with it's demands? I may not be able to keep up, but the kids growing up with all the technology won't have any trouble.  Do you think the Internet does more harm than good?  I think it's like anything...too much is never good for you. Moderation. Be sensible.

4. Your favorite dish prepared in a slow-cooker?  Pot roast with onions, potatoes, and carrots.  Your favorite fast food?  We like Wendy's spicy chicken and the chili. We also enjoy Chick-fil-a and Zaxby's chicken.  I had a Zaxby's grilled chicken Ceasar salad last night that was quite satisfying.

5. No time like the present, down time, face time, pressed for time, in the nick of time, make time, mark time, or just in time...which timely saying most relates to your life right now?  On Monday, I was pressed for time.  Today there is no time like the present.

6. Tell us about a place you went as a child or younger person that's no longer there or is now something else.  The Buckeye Lake Amusement Park is no longer there. How does that make you feel?  Kind of sad.  We had great times there when I was a kid, and that is where I learned to swim and qualified as a Life Guard. The pool there was HUGE.  There was a great roller coaster.  Those little mom & pop amusements went the way of family farms and general stores. It's all kind of sad to me. (Photos from  the internet & link above.)

I think the Miss Ohio pageant was held there and that is what we see in the photo of the pool, above.

7. Describe your comfort zone.  I'm pretty comfortable in my own skin.  I'm out of my comfort zone in a crowd of people I don't know, having to speak in front of a crowd of people I don't know, and trying to make small talk with people I don't know.  Everything else...bring it on (I'm sure some exceptions will surface!!).

8. Insert your own random thought here.  I said in yesterday's post that I was going to start trying to drink a cup of warm lemon water each morning, at Michelle's urging (Grammie Time).  I did it yesterday and today, but since I'm really not "into" lemon, this will take awhile.  I am getting my 60 ounces of water down during the day.  I must continue to hydrate better than I have been.  Do you drink enough water?

Thanks for your visit today!! Happy Hump Day!  Peace & hugs.

Thankful Tuesday with TMI....

My doctor appointment yesterday morning went well.

My problem last week had to do with constipation and a urinary tract infection. (Sorry if that's too much information.)  My innards were in trouble and making me miserable....so miserable that when I called my doctor on Thursday morning, her nurse told me I should just go to the ER, which I did. Nothing I tried on my own had worked. They did a CT scan in the ER, gave me some drugs, including potassium, which was very low, The scan came back with something questionable in one of my kidneys. The ER doctor said "...it could be a tumor".  Needless to say, that stressed me out more than a little bit.

I love my regular doctor. She read the scan results and told me that "...this is why medicine is so expensive these days!" meaning unnecessary tests.  The scan shows "something" but it was inconclusive and not an emergency, though a follow-up MRI was suggested.  Dr. A. is sending me to a Urologist (next Monday) who will evaluate the labs I did for her today and read the CT scan from the hospital. She doesn't believe I need to worry about anything, but we want to cover the bases to make sure further tests aren't required. I'm good with that.

So, that's the story about what's been going on these past six days.

My blogging friend, Michelle, at Grammie Time, talked about using lemon water (warm) every morning HERE....I bought lemons last night and a water bottle and started the regimen this morning.  Thank you, Michelle!!  I'll start with warm and will enjoy more during the day!

I spoke with my dear friend, Karen, yesterday!  She is healing and getting better though still has a long road ahead. She sounds great (yes, you do Karen!). We've been friends for over 50 years. How can that be possible?!!

All of your prayers are so appreciated!  Thanks for your visit! Peace & hugs.

Monday again.....

We always look forward to Fridays. To get to Friday, we have to experience Monday.

My day is starting at the doctor's office. I had a little scare last week and was off work for three days. The weekend has been good for getting myself back to 'normal' and I am ready to tackle the week ahead.  Hoping to have some test results this morning, and then I can share a little more.

Prayers are always appreciated, as is your visit here!  Peace & hugs!
