Thankful Thursday....

Moving toward a three-day weekend to celebrate the independence of this great land!  Our plans are up in the air right now.  Our friend Helen has invited us for the 4th but we may get a visit from some family. Not sure just yet. Whatever transpires will be fun.

Thanks for your visit!!  Peace & hugs.

Wednesday Hodgepodge Time!

Thanks to Joyce for another fun Hodgepodge!!  Click on the HP button to visit her and join in the fun!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 271

1. It's officially summer (in the northern hemisphere anyway). Which summer month is best and why?  Let's see, I live in Florida.  Our best month is October.  Summer brings mega heat and humidity.

2. Can you swim?  Yes, I can.  How did you learn?   Summers full of swimming lessons, from tadpole all the way through to a qualified lifeguard.  June 27th is National Sunglasses Day. How many pair do you own?  One, and they fit over my regular glasses, but are somewhat fashionable rather than clunky.

3. What characteristic do you judge most harshly in yourself?  My weight.  How about in others?  I try not to judge others, but DO make judgements when I see boys with their pants hanging over their butts or girls inappropriately showing too much skin.

4. Robert Frost wrote the now well known poem entitled The Road Not Taken. What's a road (literal or figurative) you've always wanted to travel, and where do you hope it takes you?  I have no idea how to answer this one.  I have no regrets, for which I am thankful, and have always just followed the path that has been put in front of me.  God has been so good to me.

5. Popsicles-yay or nay?  How about yay & nay?   If you answered yay, what's your favorite flavor?  I like them okay (cherry is my favorite) but I don't buy them anymore.

6. Brexit-on a scale of 1-10 how knowledgeable are you on what's involved here?  Probably just a 5 0r 6.  (1=very knowledgeable and 10=what's Brexit) Is this news you'll follow or is it something you think won't impact your life in any way shape or form?  I'll follow it, but not aggressively.  I believe it will impact all of us in some way, but I also think we just need to Be Calm and Carry On.

7. Share a favorite song on your summer playlist.  I just listen to the oldies station when I'm in the car.  No playlist.

8. Insert your own random thought here.  Just a reflection from our little mini-vacation last week.  I am so blessed to be part of a loving and FUN family and extended family!!  Generous, caring and respectful.  It wouldn't matter where we gather...a beautiful beach house or camped out somewhere remote. We would still have fun. We would still eat well and we would laugh until our tummies hurt. And I speak of my immediate family as well as Joe's side (my in-laws). I am so blessed and do not take it for granted.  Love.

Thanks for your visit today!!  Peace & hugs.

Tuesday Tidbits......

These are really tidbits...

  • Got the laundry done yesterday!  Hooray!
  • Made yellow rice, black beans, and smoked sausage for our dinner last night.
  • Got through nearly all of the blogs I've missed over that last days while on vacation and it was fun catching up with you all.
  • Unpacking is no fun at all.
  • We stopped at a little market on the way home and got some peach preserves, apple butter, jalapeno ketchup, and some green tomato relish.  I love green tomato relish with roast beef. My mom made the best green tomato relish...
  • I wrote thank you notes to our hosts for the Folly Beach house. They only asked that I cook an Italian dinner for all of us one night (Friday). Our niece and her husband could only stay until Wednesday, so we were invited to come Wednesday through Saturday. So appreciative. That house was expensive, even with three families splitting the cost.
  • Back to work today. Blecht. I love my job and the Museum family, but I am sure sliding into retirement mode fast!!  LOL
Thanks for your visit!  On to the rest of the week.  Peace & hugs.

Vacation/Weekend Recap on Monday....

Our little vacation started last Wednesday.  We left home at 4:45 a.m. because we were headed for Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, and lunch with blogging friend Pam Lofton.  You may know her as the author of Empty Next and Grinding My Grits.

We met at the Water's Edge Restaurant, at 1:00 p.m.  It is a lovely location and the food was excellent. We talked, we laughed, we ate, we laughed, we talked and laughed some more.  As it always has been when I meet a dear blogging friend in person, it seemed like we had been friends for years.  I've never been disappointed when meeting one of you lovely people!!  And Pam's daughter, Molly, was also delightful (and beautiful!).

A view of Shem Creek from the restaurant.  We saw a dolphin, people in kayaks and lots of big boats going by.  If you are ever in the Charleston area, go across the bridge to Mt. Pleasant and enjoy the Shem Creek area off Shrimp Boat Lane!

Another view....

That's Pam and me!!
-------------------------------------------

From there, we headed for Folly Beach and the house on East Ashley.  Such a great house!

A view of the two decks on the house....

The beach at low tide....

A view from inside, standing in the kitchen.

A view of the dining/gathering room....

A view of the kitchen....

The living room....

Our bedroom (one of six!).

My sister and I waving....shadow shot!

We all went to dinner on Thursday night, at a place in Folly called Rita's.  They broke us up into two groups to seat us (just across from each other though).

And the rest of us.....

Sadly, we had to say goodbye on Saturday morning and everyone headed out for home, except Joe and me.  We headed to Joey & Darlene's house.  We visited with them and then went out to eat in Brunswick at a great restaurant called Basil.  We stayed all night with them and then headed for home Sunday morning.  The drive home was through pounding rain with lightening and thunder. It was not fun, but we made it safely.

Our Grandpups, Zoe and Brooke.

It is always good to get home.  I'm so glad I took today off so I can do laundry and get caught up before going back to work. Though both the beach house and our son's house were/are comfortable, nothing feels as good as your own bed and getting back to "normal".

I will do my best to catch up with your posts. I may not comment on each, but I'll be reading.  Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs.

Saturday:9 As Long As You Love Me....

Thanks to Samantha for another Saturday:9!!  I am not a fan of the Backstreet Boys. I don't dislike them, they are just not of my era.  That said, I can still answer the questions!  Happy Saturday!

As Long As You Love Me

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: As Long As You Love Me (1997)

... Because Bookstraveller suggested The Backstreet Boys. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This video shows the boys in the band nervously await an audition. When were you last nervous?  When Joe had his stroke back in February.

2) BSB Brian Littrell was born with a congenital heart problem and had open heart surgery the year this song was released. Who is the last person you visited in the hospital?  My sweetheart, best friend and husband, Joe.

3) Littrell had different health trouble in 2009. While working in Japan, he contracted swine flu, which caused the band to cancel several events. Have you battled a cold or flu this summer?  Just got over a nasty cold...took 3 weeks!

4) When you feel a cold coming on, what's your favorite remedy?  Tylenol Cold and Coricidin.  Thera-flu is good too.

5) Brian and his cousin, fellow BSB member Kevin Richardson, are both from Kentucky and have been inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. According to their website, if you tour the Hall of Fame you'll see exhibits that celebrate Kentucky's contribution to American music. Do you enjoy museums? Or do you think they're a snooze?  I enjoy museums (have worked in one for almost 20 years!) as long as it is about something I am interested in.

6) BSB Nick Carter was named one of People magazine's "Most Beautiful People in the World." Who is someone you think is especially gorgeous?  Both of our grandchildren are gorgeous!!

7) This spring Nick became a father for the first time. Is anyone in your life expecting a baby this year?  Not that I know of right now.

8) The band has been involved in ongoing litigation with their first manager, saying he had been dishonest with them about how much they had earned. Tell us about someone you trusted, but shouldn't have.  My first husband. That's all I'll say about that.

9) The band's record-breaking 1999 tour was sponsored by the Sears department store chain. Sam remembers the twice-a-year shopping trips to Sears -- spring and fall -- with her mother to update Sam's school wardrobe. What's the last article of clothing you bought?  Just yesterday I bought two tops and a maxi (do they still call them that?) skirt.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

We have had a wonderful time with family here in Folly Beach, South Carolina.  Heading south today, and looking forward to an over--night visit with our son and daughter-in-law in Brunswick, GA. The trip back to Florida won't seem quite as long since we get to break it up and enjoy some time with the kids.  I have lots of photos to share, and have to mention that starting the little holiday by having lunch with blogging friend Pam and one of her lovelies, Molly, was so fun!!  Loved them and felt like we have known each other for years....

I have never been disappointed when meeting a blogging friend.  We are such a great group of people here!!  Have a wonderful weekend!  Peace & hugs.

No Hodgepodge Wednesday....

Joyce has been traveling and isn't able to conjure up a Hodgepodge for us today.  Trust me, Joyce, we understand!

This will be my last post until we get back from our little vacation get-away.  Today is a travel day for us.  We are leaving Lakeland around 4:00-4:30 a.m. because we have a lunch date with blogging friend, Pam Lofton (Grinding My Grits and Empty Nest) at 1:00, near Charleston!!  There will be lots of photos and stories to tell when we return!!

I'll catch up as best I can!!  Peace & hugs!

Weekend Recap on Monday....

Another weekend wrapped up and behind us.

Friday, I spent my day in a Non-Profit Accounting Seminar.  It is an annual event that I actually look forward to. The topics are always interesting and they also feed us breakfast and lunch!  This year it was at Lakeland's Lone Palm Golf and Country Club. Quite comfortable.

Saturday was BUSY!  We got up early and headed for Mazarro's Italian Market, over in St. Petersburg.  It was packed, as usual, but we got what we went for....imported pasta, imported canned tomatoes, imported Italian wine, yummy pastries from the bakery and some ginger candy.  They have grounds full of fun things and this one is new since our last visit. Had to snap a photo!  We actually bought sandwiches from the deli and ate them at a table close to this tree.  Joe had a hot Italian sub and I had a Boar's Head Club. Yummy good stuff even if we did eat them at 10:30 a.m.  Breakfast AND lunch for us.

We got home, unloaded and then headed for Walmart, where we got sunscreen and cat food. Then Publix for prescriptions that were ready at the Pharmacy and a few groceries. Last stop was Sam's Club for yet a few more things we usually get there.  Home again to unload, then off to the museum for our 50th Birthday Celebration.

The last count we had was 283 people who came to enjoy the afternoon celebration (from 1:00 - 4:00). We had performances from the local community theater and from the local high school for the arts. Quite wonderful!! We had a chalk car parked in front of the front doors and the kids had lots of fun writing messages on it.  The cake cutting was at 3:30 and the people who were still there sang Happy Birthday. The local newspaper was there, too, so hoping to see something nice in the Ledger.

Sunday....laundry.  I also tried a new crock-pot recipe for beef and broccoli. Very good!!  I made the meat sauce and put it in the freezer so we can take it to Folly Beach with us on Wednesday. I'm cooking Italian for one night. There will be a dozen of us. I'm doing baked ziti and all the trimmings.

So, on to a new week and off on vacation Wednesday!!  Can't wait to get started!

Thanks for your visit today!  Have a blessed Monday and I wish you Peace & Love!

Saturday:9....Madonna's Papa, Don't Preach

Papa, Don't Preach

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Papa, Don't Preach (1986)

If you're not familiar with today's song, you can hear it here.

1) Madonna has sold more than 200 million records worldwide. Do you have any of her songs on your iPod/mp3 player/phone?  No. I don't have an iPod, mp3 player or music on my phone (gasp!).

2) When she first arrived in New York in search of fame and fortune, Madonna supported herself by working at Dunkin' Donuts. What did you order last time you were at Dunkin' Donuts?  It's been awhile, but probably the sausage breakfast sandwich.

3) Madonna and her first husband, Sean Penn, ended their marriage on New Year's Eve, 1988. Sam's New Year's Eves are never that dramatic. What about you? Do you have any vivid New Year's Eve memories you'd like to share?  LOL....we watch the ball drop and go to bed. No going out for us.

4) Madonna admits she suffers from brontophobia, aka the fear of storms. Are you scared of thunder and lightening?  No.

5) Onstage during the 2015 Coachella fest, Madonna shocked the audience by planting a kiss square on the lips of much-younger rapper Drake. What's something that surprised you recently?  The terrible news in Orlando, though it really shouldn't have surprised me.

6) More recently, Madonna was at the center of a controversy because Prince fans didn't like her tribute at the Billboard Music Awards. They made themselves heard on social media. Was your last Facebook post or Tweet positive or negative?  I don't think you will find anything negative on my Facebook site. I don't tweet.

7) One of the things Sam's papa preaches about is car maintenance. He reminds her to check her car's air filter regularly because a dirty filter can reduce mileage. Share your own car maintenance tip with us.  Regular maintenance is key. My oil gets changed every 3,000 miles. We also have a mechanic we like and trust (from our church).

8) When she was growing up, Sam's father was often away on business. He always remembered to bring back the complimentary shampoos, conditioners, and lotions from the hotels where he stayed. When will you next stay in a hotel (or motel, bed-and-breakfast or Airbnb room)?  Next week, actually.  Folly Beach, here we come!

9) To celebrate Father's Day, Sam is giving away her father's favorite candy: LifeSavers. Would you prefer a roll of Wild Cherry, Butter Rum, Winter Green or Peppermint?  Butter Rum, thank you very much!

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks to Crazy Sam for this week's meme!  Thanks to you for your visit today!  Happy weekend!  Peace & hugs!

Friday Foto Friends Time!!

It's Friday!!  Making it even more fun, it's also Friday Foto Friends day!  Please join the fun and link up with a photo or two over on Debbie's blog "Breathing In Grace".

I make no apologies for re-posting photos of my dad for this Father's Day weekend.  I was around five months old (or so) in this picture with my sweet daddy.

If you notice an ornery smile, you got it right.  My dad was FUN and loved to show off and make people laugh.  Lost him much too soon (December 1989) to the evil cancer. He was only 63.  I miss him every day, but know he is directing Angels and helping to protect his family from Heaven.  I feel his presence often!

---------------------------------

If you have been reading my blogs for awhile, you will remember that we were hoping to go to Barbados (this week) with a whole bunch of D'Orsaneos, for a fun island reunion/vacation.  We decided going out of the country with Joe's health issues was probably not a good idea, so we opted out (and are going to Folly Beach next week instead).  Our son, Jeff, was able to go and we are so happy he is there with his cousins having a great time!!

This picture was posted on Facebook this week.  There are about a dozen nieces and nephews missing, who also couldn't go, but this is a good showing for the D'Orsaneo side of the family.  Our Jeff is standing far left (no tan yet and with a drink in his hand).  Our niece, Nikki, is married to Dimitri, who is from Barbados.  This vacation was so more of his family could meet more of our family.  They are all staying in a few Villas not far from the beach and I think some special events have been planned by Dimitri's family while everyone is there.

I know we are missing out on lots of fun, but this represents two younger generations of the family and they all have a lot more energy than we have!!  We'll have fun hearing all the stories when they get back!  Love these kids...each and every one of them!

Enjoy your weekend!!  Thanks for your visit today.  Peace & hugs.

Excellent Words Regarding Orlando.....

When I get emotional, I'm not always able to say what I mean to say....get the right words written in the right order.  I read this last night and thought Utah's Lt.Governor said it very well.  Please take the time to read his words.

Lt. Gov. Cox speaks at vigil for Orlando: 'My heart has changed'

By KSL.com   |  Posted Jun 14th, 2016 @ 7:01pm

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Lt. Governor Spencer Cox addressed a vigil held Monday night to honor the victims and survivors of the mass shooting in Orlando. Here is a transcript of his remarks:
---
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you for being here tonight on this very solemn and somber occasion. I begin with an admission and an apology. First, I recognize fully that I am a balding, youngish, middle-aged straight, white, male, Republican, politician... with all of the expectations and privileges that come with those labels. I am probably not who you expected to hear from today.
I’m here because, yesterday morning, 49 Americans were brutally murdered. And it made me sad. And it made me angry. And it made me confused. I’m here because those 49 people were gay. I’m here because it shouldn’t matter. But I’m here because it does. I am not here to tell you that I know exactly what you are going through. I am not here to tell you that I feel your pain. I don’t pretend to know the depths of what you are feeling right now. But I do know what it feels like to be scared. And I do know what it feels like to be sad. And I do know what it feels like to be rejected. And, more importantly, I know what it feels like to be loved.
I grew up in a small town and went to a small rural high school. There were some kids in my class that were different. Sometimes I wasn’t kind to them. I didn’t know it at the time, but I know now that they were gay. I will forever regret not treating them with the kindness, dignity and respect — the love — that they deserved. For that, I sincerely and humbly apologize.
Over the intervening years, my heart has changed. It has changed because of you. It has changed because I have gotten to know many of you. You have been patient with me. You helped me learn the right letters of the alphabet in the right order even though you keep adding new ones. You have been kind to me. Jim Dabakis even told me I dressed nice once, even though I know he was lying. You have treated me with the kindness, dignity, and respect — the love — that I very often did NOT deserve. And it has made me love you.
But now we are here. We are here because 49 beautiful, amazing people are gone. These are not just statistics. These were individuals. These are human beings. They each have a story. They each had dreams, goals, talents, friends, family. They are you and they are me. And one night they went out to relax, to laugh, to connect, to forget, to remember. And in a few minutes of chaos and terror, they were gone.
I believe that we can all agree we have come a long way as a society when it comes to our acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQ community (did I get that right?). However, there has been something about this tragedy that has very much troubled me. I believe that there is a question, two questions actually, that each of us needs to ask ourselves in our heart of hearts. And I am speaking now to the straight community. How did you feel when you heard that 49 people had been gunned down by a self-proclaimed terrorist? That’s the easy question. Here is the hard one: Did that feeling change when you found out the shooting was at a gay bar at 2 a.m. in the morning? If that feeling changed, then we are doing something wrong.
So now we find ourselves at a crossroads. A crossroads of hate and terror. How do we respond? How do you respond? Do we lash out with anger, hate and mistrust. Or do we, as Lincoln begged, appeal to the “better angels of our nature?”
Usually when tragedy occurs, we see our nation come together. I was saddened, yesterday to see far too many retreating to their over-worn policy corners and demagoguery. Let me be clear, there are no simple policy answers to this tragedy. Beware of anyone who tells you that they have the easy solution. It doesn’t exist. And I can assure you this — that calling people idiots, communists, fascists or bigots on Facebook is not going to change any hearts or minds. Today we need fewer Republicans and fewer Democrats. Today we need more Americans.
But just because an easy solution doesn’t exist, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try. The greatest generations in the history of the world were never innately great. They became great because of how they responded in the face of evil. Their humanity is measured by their response to hate and terror.
I truly believe that this is the defining issue of our generation. Can we be brave? Can we be strong? Can we be kind and, perhaps, even happy, in the face of atrocious acts of hate and terrorism? Do we find a way to unite? Or do these atrocities further corrode and divide our torn nation? Can we, the citizens of the great state of Utah, lead the nation with love in the face of adversity? Can WE become a greatest generation?
I promise we can. But I also promise it will never happen if we leave it to the politicians. Ultimately, there is only one way for us to come together. It must happen at a personal level. We must learn to truly love one another.
The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said: “You will not enter paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another.”
Jesus said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you.”
Now, you know a little something about hate. And you know a little something about persecution. But you also know something about loving, blessing and doing good. What our country needs more than ever is less politics and more kindness. If nothing else, as we can see here tonight, this tragedy has the potential to bring us closer than ever before.
And so may we leave today, with a resolve to be a little kinder. May we try to listen more and talk less. May we forgive someone that has wronged us. And perhaps, most importantly, try to love someone that is different than us. For my straight friends, might I suggest starting with someone who is gay.
I leave you with the words of Lyndon B. Johnson. They were spoken at another very sad time in our history, the death of President John F. Kennedy. He said this:
“Our enemies have always made the same mistake. In my lifetime — in depression and in war — they have awaited our defeat. Each time, from the secret places of the American heart, came forth the faith they could not see or that they could not even imagine. It brought us victory. And it will again. For this is what America is all about.”
On behalf of the 3 million people of the state of Utah, We Are Orlando. We love you. And I love you.

Remarks delivered Monday, June 13, 2016, on the grounds of the Salt Lake City and County Building.
