Flipper
Saturday 9: Flipper (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) Flipper ran for three seasons, from 1964 to 1967. Are you familiar with the show? Were you a fan? Yes! I loved watching Flipper when I was a kid!!
2) Brothers Sandy and Bud consider a bottle-nosed dolphin, named Flipper, their pet. Do you currently share your home with any animals? Indeed I do! Three cats, Vinny, Lucy, and Lilly.
3) Bud and Sandy's dad was Chief Warden Porter Ricks of the fictional Coral Key Marine Preserve. In reality, the show was filmed in Miami and Key Biscayne. When were you last in the ocean? Which ocean was it? We try to dip our toes in the Gulf of Mexico a couple of times a year. We are an hour from the Gulf and about two hours from the Atlantic. We much prefer the Gulf beaches. It is about time to head over to St. Pete Beach for some sun.
4) There was no one single "Flipper." In close-ups, the role was played by a dolphin named Susie. While Susie was good at interacting with people, she had trouble with stunts, and sometimes a male dolphin named Clown was brought in for action sequences. Do you consider yourself more social, like Susie? Or are you more athletic, like Clown? These days I am more like Susie but, in my youth, I was pretty athletic.
5) Without looking it up, do you know the difference between a dolphin and a porpoise? I think it has to do with body size and the shape of the head but would have to look it up to be more specific. I know that dolphin makes for good eating and I think one kind is called Mahi-Mahi (?).
6) Flipper wasn't just a TV pet. He was an industry! During the show's run, Flipper comic books, coloring books, and puzzles were very popular. As an adult, do you entertain yourself by reading comics, coloring, or completing jigsaw puzzles? I couldn't get into the coloring, we can't do jigsaw puzzles because the cats would be all over them, and the only comics I read are in the daily newspaper. My favorites are Pickles and Pearls Before Swine.
7) The Flipper lunchbox was also a big seller. It came with a Thermos topped with a red cup. Do you own a Thermos? Yes, we do own a real Thermos.
8) In 1964, when Flipper premiered, it was up against The Outer Limits and The Jackie Gleason Show. If those were your only viewing choices, would you watch the family show about the dolphin, the sci-fi anthology show, or the comedy-variety show? (Or would you rather flip through a magazine?) Well, I could watch any of them and do catch reruns of The Outer Limits now and then, but Jackie Gleason would be fun to see. I loved the June Taylor Dancers and those kaleidoscopes that they always did!

9) Random question -- Which would you be more comfortable explaining: how a car engine works, the current IRS tax brackets, or the rules of baseball? Well, Joe could explain all of those but I would have to give baseball a try.
Thanks for your visit and happy Saturday!
Peace & hugs! God bless!

Oh yes, I remember Flipper. It was a fun show to watch. I guess I was a teenager then, and probably wasn't quite as "into it" at that time. We used to watch a lot of the variety shows back then like Carol Burnett, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Ed Sullivan, etc. there were so many. And then the Game Shows. (BTW, the dolphin that we eat is not the porpoise kind, I don't think. There is another fish that is called a dolphin that is more like a tuna or something, I think...not certain, but I don't think we eat Flipper. At least I don't think we do...some places around the world might. I think, not sure about it.)
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adored Flipper! I do recall The Jackie Gleason Show, too; my parents enjoyed it so much.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Terri!
I've heard of Flipper but I never watched it. I do love dolphins. We go to the beach at least once a week and watch the dolphins in the water.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
I loved the variety shows... especially Ed Sullivan. I recall I wasn't allowed to watch Elvis when he was on... the swinging hips were a bridge to far for my young eyes. If my parents were alive today!
ReplyDeleteI remember Flipper but dont remember watching the show. Hope you have a good Sat.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your answers today.
ReplyDeleteWe do have a couple of same answers.
Have a good Saturday.
I enjoyed your answers, Terri. Have a great day friend.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I could go for some Gulf therapy right about now. While living there, I was never much of a beach-goer ... just goes to show what living in the desert 15 years will do. Ha! I don't recall the Gleason show, but loved Ed Sullivan, et al.
ReplyDeleteI love the Gulf as well. I would love to be there right now. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

I did not know you could eat dolphins! Where have I been all my life? lol Hope all is well with you and Joe!
ReplyDeleteI used to like Jackie Gleason with him and Art Carney, but felt sorry for Alice having to live in that tiny, everything gray apartment. I see Mahi Mahi on menus all the time and didn't know it is dolphin! Wow! Learn something every day.
ReplyDeleteIt isn't the Flipper kind of dolphin, so no worries.
DeleteYep, I would definitely be more comfortable explaining baseball. After being married to Chuck for so long I think I would do a pretty good job too!
