77 Sunset Strip
Saturday 9: 77 Sunset Strip (1958)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) 77 Sunset Strip was one of TV's early hits, running for six seasons. Before this morning, were you familiar with this show? Yes, I've heard of the show and have heard the song but I have never seen any reruns.
2) The show's jazzy theme is punctuated by finger snaps. When you snap your fingers, is the left-handed snap as loud as your right-handed snap? I had to do it, and yes, the left is as loud as the right snap.
3) The show revolved around Bailey and Spencer Investigations. Stu Bailey and Jeff Spencer were among TV first "private eyes." Who is your all-time favorite TV PI? Well, Columbo is my favorite "old-time" detective. He was a police officer and not a PI but hope he still counts.
4) Their office had "a fancy label," meaning an attractive address, on Los Angeles' Sunset Blvd. Tell us about the prestige area of your neighborhood. We don't have a fancy shopping district but the fanciest addresses are on and just off Lake Hollingsworth Drive.
5) Next door was Dino's Lodge, the real-life restaurant and bar owned by entertainer Dean Martin. Are you a Dean Martin fan? I always liked Dean Martin's singing but he isn't a favorite from that era. I just never liked it when he acted (or was) drunk.
6) The valet at Dino's was Kookie. He was known for his perfect hair, his slang ("ginchy" meant cool, "germsville" was the hospital, "a dark seven" was a bad week), and his desire to someday be a private investigator, like Stu and Jeff. Do you think you'd be a good detective? I think I might be passable but am too old to learn new tricks now. Maybe 30 years ago!
7) Stu and Jeff had a loyal secretary named Suzanne, played by French actress Jacqueline Beer. She was married to adventurer Thor Heyerdahl, who famously traveled from Peru to French Polynesia by raft. Does 100 days on a raft, sailing the south seas, sound fascinating to you? Nope... again, I am just too old for that!
8) Clint Eastwood was a fan of the show and, in the 1990s, tried unsuccessfully to bring 77 Sunset Strip back. Is there a show from the past you'd like to see "rebooted?" Laugh-In was always fun and so were some of the variety shows like Ed Sullivan and Carol Burnett.
9) Random question: Thinking about the last week, did you nag anyone? Or were you the one who was nagged? I don't think I nagged Joe about anything and he didn't nag me. We don't really nag at each other (too much!). Nagging doesn't work anyway. How does that joke go...

A few folks have asked about my knee(s). The new knee is doing great! I'm very happy with my matching pair. Thanks for caring!
Thanks for stopping by! Happy Weekend!!
Peace & hugs! God bless!!

I have to say I never watched 77 Sunset Strip so hard for me to answer some of the questions. Glad to hear your knee is doing just fine though!
ReplyDeleteYou know Columbo was my first thought, but since he was a cop I thought of someone else. He's always my favorite, though. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved variety shows. I don't understand why that format died out so completely. They'd still be fun to watch.
Have a blessed Saturday!
Glad to get confirmation that your knee is doing better, Terri. I do recall this show being on TV, but never watched it as my parents deemed me too young for such fare. I wish we did have shows today like Carol Burnett's; she was a favorite of mine.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Columbo is still one of my faves. I still watch him. Glad your new knee is doing well. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteGrin...I enjoyed your answers. Have a great day, Terri.
ReplyDeleteI took a trial of Britbox some time ago.... Keeping up Appearances is one not to be missed.. Never had so many good laughs... highly recommend.
ReplyDeleteWe still have ACORN TV but gave up Britbox about a year ago. We did watch a few of KUA and had some laughs. British humor is some of the best!
DeleteYeay about your knees!!! Like Stacy, Columbo was my first thought; I loved that show. I remember Ed Sullivan being 'appointment TV' back in the day. There's DWTS and AGT (etc.), but I still miss the old variety format.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember this show from my childhood. My favorite show as a child was Gilligan's Island. I wanted to be Mary Ann.:)
ReplyDeleteSeems Colombo was a favorite of many - I liked it too - but I like Matlock - lol. I guess it is not really a detective story. ☺
ReplyDeleteMatlock was very good too!
DeleteI love Carol Burnett! So funny. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

Carol Burnett was one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteI've been watching Carol Burnett reruns on Prime video. I always loved that show, but when Tim Conway and Harvey Korman got together, great laughs!!! Yes, I liked Dean Martin, but don't understand why people find drunks amusing.
ReplyDeleteI never saw that show, but I also loved Carol Burnett!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your matching set of knees is doing well. :)
