Your Mother Should Know
Saturday 9: Your Mother Should Know (1967)
1) This week's featured artists, The Beatles, invite us to get up and dance to a song that was a hit before your mother was born. Do you enjoy the oldies? How old must a song be before you consider it "old?" First of all, my mother was born WAY before the Beatles hit the scene (and so was I!!). MY oldies are from the 60s and include the Beatles. It is still hard for me to think of the 70s, 80s, and 90s being "oldies".
2) Paul McCartney knew bandmate John Lennon's mom, Julia, and credits her with introducing him to the ukulele. Do you recall any of your childhood friends' mothers with fondness? My BFF's mom still refers to me as her 4th daughter. BFF Elaine is blessed to still have her mom and I am blessed that she is still my other mom!
3) Paul's own mother, Mary, tried to instill in her son a sense of pride in his appearance and saw to it he always left the house in a clean, ironed shirt. Paul says that, to this day, when he smells fresh laundry, he thinks of his mum. Is there a scent or sound that reminds you of someone you love who is no longer with us? Lots of scents and lots of sounds remind me of lots of dear ones who are no longer with us.
6) Mother Winters always gave our own Crazy Sam peppermint tea to calm her stomach. Do you have any tried-and-true home remedies to share? Nope. No home remedies.
7) Sam's mother always tips 15% in restaurants. Sam has worked in foodservice and is more judgmental, tipping between 10% and 25%, depending on the quality of the service. What's your tipping policy? If the service is really good I do 20-25% for the tip.
8) Sam's mother still gets the Sunday paper because of the sales fliers. She makes separate lists for each store, picking up grocery and household items where she knows they are on sale. Sam thinks her mother's strategy is a waste of time and gas and prefers one-stop shopping (even better, online one-stop shopping). Are you more like mother or daughter? Daughter. I use three different grocery stores but not on the same day and not because of coupons. I don't cut out coupons. It depends on which one is most convenient at the time I am shopping. It is usually Publix.
9) Sam is celebrating Mother's Day with her mother's favorite, Hershey Bars. Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or chocolate with almonds? I like chocolate with almonds.

This morning, I am off to Mayfaire by the Lake!! The Museum is celebrating 50 years of Mayfaire this year!! I went to the Museum on Thursday and bought a t-shirt ahead of time (pays to know someone!) so I could wear it today. I am taking my neighbor, Susan, with me. It feels strange to be an observer, even after five years retired. I still feel the excitement and anticipation that this week always brought. Mayfaire is a great event for Lakeland and for the 160 artists!!
Lots of Mayfaire memories!! It is always Mother's Day weekend and my wedding anniversary is May 11th, so Joe and I always picked out something from an artist as our anniversary gift. My house is full of Mayfaire (and anniversary) memories. Since I had to work all weekend, Joe always volunteered to drive the golf cart shuttles. He had lots of fun doing that. When we got it all closed down on Sunday evening, our tradition was to go to Peking House for Chinese food. They always had a Mother's Day buffet there with a few stragglers coming in from Mayfaire. How blessed I am to be able to smile my way through this weekend, with a warm heart full of wonderful memories!

What a blessing to still have your friend's mom around! I think among my friends I am the only one whose mom is still alive. Ugh...THAT makes me feel old. Have fun today, my friend. I know how much you enjoy the Mayfair and I always enjoyed your posts about it. I'm sure Joe will be there in spirit. ((hugs))
ReplyDeleteHow the years keep rolling along. It was Sax, piano and organ here and feel blessed that my family encouraged music in my life. Have a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteThe Mayfaire event looks like fun. That's such a wonderful photo of you and Joe.
ReplyDeleteI hope your weekend is wonderful and joyful my friend!
Blessings. xx
I don't care what they call 'em, but I much prefer olden tunes to that which passes for entertainment today.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're getting to experience Mayfaire again ... with a smile on your face. I dare say, Joe would want it that way. Looking forward to your photos!
I noticed all the tents are white. Are they provided for the artists or is it a requirement they have to be white. It looks very, very nice! Gives a bit of an elegant as well as uniform appearance.
ReplyDeleteGreat memories you have of this weekend plus new ones you are making this weekend.
Lynda, no requirement for the tents, and each artist has their own. The white tents are affordable and are a pretty standard size. The spots are all the same size, thus the tents are the same size.
ReplyDeleteHave a great time at the Mayfaire event! That sounds like fun. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

I am so glad that your memories are happy ones and that you hare surrounded by reminders of that wonderful time in your life. I think of the 60w as being 'the oldies', too. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope you are enjoying the Mayfaire event and that you are having excellent weather for it. I love the picture of you and Joe. Such a happy picture! I know you have lots of precious memories from these events...and I am glad that you have a friend to go with you this year. Enjoy your day and weekend.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day weekend to you, dear Terri. You have wonderful memories made with Joe. The picture you posted of the two of you is really good.
ReplyDeleteI remember you working at this and Joe helping. Then I remember the years you couldn't do it because of your knees. Glad you can visit it again and I'm thankful for the memories you have of you and Joe there. I love that photo.
ReplyDeleteHappy Mothers Day and blessed anniversary day as well.
Looks like a fun event and I love the photo of you and Joe.
ReplyDeleteHow weird! I left a comment here yesterday, but it didn't show up, Terri. Maybe it ended up in your spam?
ReplyDeleteHappy Mother's Day!
