Saturday 9 (and questions answered)...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Give a Little Love

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9
questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Give a Little Love (1988)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

In memory of Naomi Judd (1946-2022)

1) In this week's song, the Judds tell us they aren't impressed by diamonds or foreign travel. If you had your choice, would you prefer a $1,500 diamond pendant or a $1,500 voucher from United Airlines?  I'll take the voucher for travel. I've never been a diamonds kind of girl.

2) In the video for this song, the Judds are shown having fun on the beach. Do you have any trips to the beach planned for the upcoming summer months?  Nope.  Nothing planned but I am close enough to go most any time I feel like it.  The beach doesn't hold the same attraction that it used to, though.  The sun isn't nice to me and it takes too much trouble carrying all the paraphernalia from the car...

3) Early in their career, this mother-daughter duo performed in clubs and venues around San Francisco, where they called themselves The Hillbilly Women. Have you recently been to a bar or restaurant with live music?  It has been a while, but there is live music at our local brewery and I have been there with friends a few times.

4) They moved to Nashville in 1979 in search of greater success. During the three years it took them to score a record contract, Naomi supported the family as a part-time nurse and occasional model. She enjoyed the flexibility so her schedule could accommodate auditions. Do you like having a pre-planned schedule? Or would you rather keep things loose?  It kind of depends on what and where but I really prefer keeping things loose these days.

5) Wynona sang the Elvis classic "Burning Love" in the 2002 Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. What's the most recent Disney movie you've seen?  I can't even remember the last time I saw a Disney movie.

6) In 2011, Wynona wrote her first novel, Restless Heart, about a country singer struggling with the price of fame. Have you ever tried your hand at writing fiction?  Nope.

7) Kid sister Ashley Judd is the only woman in her immediate family to not change her first name. Naomi was born Diana, and Wynona was originally Christina. Do you like your first name?  For some reason, my folks named all of us with a more "formal" name and a nickname, knowing they would rarely use the "real" name. I am Teresa but have always been Terri.  I do not like Teresa but it is what it is.  My brother was Paul Randall, called Randy.  My sisters are Patricia (Patti) and Tamara (Tammy).  Maybe it was a thing back in the 50s.

8) In 1988, the year this song was popular, Sonny Bono went from entertainer to politician when he was elected Mayor of Palm Springs. Have you met the mayor of your town?  Yes!!  The current one and the last two. The museum, where I worked for 20 years, was a community hub.  We even had fashion shows for a few years with local celebrities modeling (including the Mayor and the Police Chief).

9) Random question: Were you a member of the Columbia House Record Club?  No, but I used to belong to 5 or 6 book clubs and also a couple of VCR/DVD clubs but never a record club that I remember.

Peace & hugs!
Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine!

PS:  Thanks for all the advice about Helen in yesterday's blog.  Helen is in memory care, not assisted living.  All of the patients have a private room.  Helen is rarely in her room.  They do take her to the TV room where there are always other patients.  They try to engage her in crafts and music but she isn't interested. None of the patients there can converse. They are all basically in their own worlds.  No friendships can be born. Helen pretty much ignores the other people.  Two of the women are constantly walking into Helen's room (and others) and she acts like she doesn't even see them.  If I am visiting Helen, they walk up to us and just stand there. I acknowledge them and they stare or smile or stand for a while and then just walk away.  Memory care is tough.

Sometimes Helen talks and talks (nonsense) and other times she is withdrawn and 'somewhere' else.  She has been under hospice care since last Fall. She is 94 years old.  She was using a walker until a few weeks ago.  She would walk around and around and they had trouble getting her to stop and sit down.  She was falling. Now she is in a wheelchair (and is safer). It is so very sad. I will speak with Amy when she calls again and will try the companion on a trial basis. I really don't think it will be beneficial, but I am willing to try it.

She is well cared for there.  Her room is clean, her clothing is clean, and her body is clean.  I go once a week, on different days.  She gets three meals a day in the dining room with other residents.  She sees the doctor as scheduled and the nurses and aides are always there.  Helen's niece, Cheryl, is still in Lakeland but she works full time in the school system. When school is out, she will be more attentive and will visit her aunt more often. Cheryl is taking lunch to Helen for Memorial Day and they will eat together. I have to work, so am glad Cheryl has that planned.  I hope this answers all of your questions and concerns from yesterday. Thanks again.

  2. Ditto: No diamonds, no beach, NO Disney. That's interesting about your given names. I've always had somewhat of a fascination with names-giving. Back when I dreamed of having a little girl, my choices revolved around the 'formal' -- but realized I've no more control of what people say than the man in the moon. True story: On her first day, one of my former co-workers introduced herself as "Debra. NOT Deb, Not Debbie. Debra." (OK, then!)

Thanks for the info on Helen's situation. There's much I didn't realize about memory care. God bless the caregivers!

  3. I volunteered for Hospice before the pandemic and spent time in a memory care facility and have such high respect for the people that work there and those kind people that visit. You are very sweet to spend time with her. It's wonderful that she is well cared for but she probably doesn't know much about what goes on around her. It's very sad....I know. Enjoy your day. I think I'll listen to some country music today. Hugs!

  4. Good update on Helen. It sounds like a facility most of us would like having in our communities. Not all are as they advertise. It is a blessing when the staff embrace the vision of management. Truly a blessing.
Do you ever go to the beach in the early evening? My husband and I found on our last vacation that is what we had to do because we couldn't cope with the sun - - - just too hot for skin, plus the cancer thing to be concerned about.

  5. Interesting song choice! No to the diamonds, but I would also say no to the voucher from United as well. I would however take a voucher from Amtrak. I haven't been to the beach in many years. Thank you for sharing the update on Helen. Have a pleasant weekend, Terri.

  6. I had no idea that the Judds changed their names like they did, Terri. Sure was sad to lose Naomi . . .
Thanks for the update on Helen, too. It's good to know that Cheryl will be able to visit her more frequently once school is out.
    Blessings!

  7. I don't remember ever knowing that the Judd women had changed their names. I feel like that's what I'm gradually doing in my senior years. My parents named me Thelma Jean, my siblings nicknamed me Jeanie, and I've been Jean most of my life. But now everything has to match my driver's license, so I'm Thelma Jean all over the place. I hate it.

I feel sad about Helen, but I'm so thankful she can afford to be cared for at a nice place like that. I dread the possibility of being a burden to our children some day.

  8. I didn't know that about the Judd's. I like the old Country music, so, haven't listened to them much. Interesting. So sad about her mental illness. That must be a terrible cross to bear.
I'm the same on the No diamonds, No beach, and absolutely NO Disney.
Does it have to the United Airlines? I would prefer the cash. Would buy enough food for awhile. Well, at least, it's not Delta. I'll never fly Delta again. Long story but they are very awful, or they were.
My heart is sad about Helen and her condition. You are so very, very kind to watch out for her. My MIL is having those same issues. It's so heartbreaking to watch. I pray every day the Lord will take her Home (she is a believer). But, God's will be done. He is wise and knows what's best. Amen!?
    Blessings. xx

  9. Hi Terri: What a loss for the music industry, she had many demons but still was able to sing so beautifully.
I love my first name, named after my Great Grandmother on my mother's side my aunt on my father's side, I am still called Catherin, very few call me Cathy.

    Catherine

  10. I think the nickname thing was something maybe our generation and back did. The kiddos I meet these days who have formal names go by those formal names...Robert is Robert, not Bob, Rob, Bobby, or Robby.

It sounds to me like Helen is getting very good care and is in a good place (trust me, there are a lot of not so nice ones out there). It comes to a place and time in the disease that you just keep them comfortable, clean, and content. They will find their stimulation in whatever clicks on a given day, but it sounds like most in Helen's unit are getting into the later stages. I am sure she appreciates your company in some sense. Most of them do.
