God Bless America
Unfamiliar with Deanna Durbin's rendition of week's tune? Hear it here.
Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.
This week's Saturday 9 is from the archives.
1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, this is when memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood? Yes, we have a Veteran's Memorial Park not too far from where I live. I pass it when I go to the veterinarian's office with one of the cats.
2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial/Decoration Day was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our Presidents? No. I met Sarah Palin once, though.
3) According to the AAA, more than 30 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend? Just to church on Sunday and work on Monday.
4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food? I've mentioned before that I'm not really into picnics. A restaurant with a waterfront picnic table would be fine, though!
5) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on? My AC runs nearly non-stop year-round.
6) Though she's belting out one of America's best-loved patriotic songs, Deanna Durbin was born in Canada. Is there anyone in your family or circle of friends who wasn't born in the USA? Joe's dad was born in Italy, as were his grandparents on both sides. My friend, Judy, is Canadian.
7) No longer a household name, Ms. Durbin was once one of the biggest stars in the country. One of her most popular films was 1937's One Hundred Men and a Girl, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Recommend a movie that you really like, but don't think many Saturday 9ers have seen. How about "Invincible" about the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a favorite of Joe's and I love it too. I have the DVD. It's a true story and Joe had season tickets the year this all took place. He remembered it well.
Invincible is a 2006 biographical sports drama film about Vince Papale, a real-life Philadelphia Eagles player, and his unlikely journey to play in the NFL in 1976. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as Papale, a 30-year-old bartender from South Philadelphia who became a local sports legend after impressing coaches at an open tryout. Ericson Core directed the film, which also stars Greg Kinnear as Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil. Invincible is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
8) Back in 1938, Deanna Durbin had her handprints cemented in front of the TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Have you ever visited that Los Angeles tourist attraction? Nope. I've never been to California.
9) Random question: What food did you hate as a child, but enjoy now? I can't think of a food I didn't like. My mom was a great cook. We had a huge garden full of delicious produce. We ate dinner together every night and now and then fought over who got the last spoonful of broccoli or cauliflower. We ate spinach. We ate sauerkraut. We ate cabbage... you get the idea.
- "The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands".

Our A/C or heat runs all year too. I even have a back portable window unit in case the big fancy schmancy one quits. Have a great Memorial Day weekend! 💙
ReplyDeleteI heard Sarah Palin speak live in our town a few years back. I also saw George W. Bush speak in our town too. That's as close as I've come to meeting a president. My son-in-law was born in Cuba. I've never seen the handprints at the Chinese Theater in California either, but I have seen them at Disney World at their version of the Chinese Theater. These are fun questions this week and I enjoyed reading your answers. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend.
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of Deanna Durbin. I looked her up and she moved to the US as an infant, died in 2013.
ReplyDeleteI've never met a president or VP, but I do live near Grand Rapids which is where Gerald Ford is from so there is a lot of things about him here. :)
No plans for us this weekend either.
Yep, on that ac... especially days like today, grin. Sorry you have to work Monday.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard of that movie, Terri, but I love Mark Wahlberg, so will be sure to look it up. Danny's grandfather and grandmother were from Italy, too. Have an amazing Memorial Day, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI'd totally forgotten about seeing Invincible, but yes, it was a wonderful story. Goosebumps! I sure admired Sarah Palin back in the day. I've never met a President but came close to attending a political fundraiser last year. Unfortunately, his ticket prices and crowds made it not so enticing.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you: "A restaurant with a waterfront picnic table would be fine...".
ReplyDeleteAs I comment here, I've got a ceiling fan above me and an oscillating tower fan in front of me. We sit on our lanai nearly every day but there is no AC out here, hence the fans.
Yes, I've been to the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood. (spent 8 of my growing up years in So. Cal)
As a child I did not like cheese; now I love it!
Enjoy your weekend, Terri!
My Grandparents had a nice big garden. I loved working in it when I was a kid. I also loved picking strawberries for them. I would love to grow a garden, but the rocks in the soil here drive me crazy. It is very hard to dig. Loved your answers! Have a Happy Memorial Day! ♥

I enjoyed your answers today! Our air conditioner runs from March or April (and sometimes in February!) through October. Our heat only runs a few months a year. My grandpa and my daddy both had great gardens, but I never tasted broccoli or cauliflower until I was a young adult. My daddy actually made homemade sauerkraut one year! It tasted good but it made their basement smell!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Terri:
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your answers.
I like potato salad and baked beans. A BBQ would be even better.
Have the air conditioner on.
Have already decorated graves.
Happy Memorial Day.
I wasn’t a fan of veggies as a kid but I love them now.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you have to work..... that song was an oldie... but really it never gets old....have a wonderful weekend.
