The Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!!

Tunnel of Love

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to
answer the questions, however, and here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: Tunnel of Love (1958)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this week's song, Doris Day tries to convince her lover to share a kiss in the Tunnel of Love. What's your favorite amusement park ride?  I used to love roller coasters but now I am happy to hold everyone's stuff and/or babysit someone not tall enough for the ride.  I'm old!! LOL

2) In the 1950s, when Doris recorded this song, Tunnel of Love rides were popular in the US. Couples would climb into small boats that only seat two and float through a dark tunnel, accompanied by romantic music. Today less than 100 of these rides still exist. Have you ever taken a ride through the Tunnel of Love?  Nope.  Just It's a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean and those don't count!!

3) This week's featured artist, Doris Day, made approximately 40 films and a TV series. She said one of her favorite things about being an actress was the clothes. She loved collaborating with the experts who created her wardrobe. Her contemporary, Betty Grable, found all the fittings boring and just let the wardrobe department do their job without offering much input. Imagine you are a performer: Would you be more like Doris or Betty?  I would have fun being like Doris.

4) There was a persistent rumor that, after Doris appeared on Bob Hope's radio show, the two had an affair. She always denied it. Have you ever been the subject of workplace gossip?  Not that I've been aware of but probably something at some point.

5) Doris never liked to fly and her fear increased as she got older. After she retired, she refused to fly at all. This caused her to decline lifetime achievement awards and other events in her honor. Have you more recently extended, accepted, or declined an invitation?  I extended an invitation to Mali to join the Mas Verde dinner gang at Tapatio's on Thursday evening.  She came and seemed to enjoy it and we invited her to Cheddar's this coming Thursday.  Danon will still be in the hospital.

6) After show biz, Doris devoted herself to animal welfare. She used to say that we should be more sensitive to the loneliness and sadness people feel when they lose a pet. Think of a time when you were grieving. What words or gestures helped you get through the difficult time?  Actions speak louder than words and friends/family who showed up meant so much.

7) In 1958, when this song was on the Billboard chart, "The Purple People Eater" was also popular. It's a silly song about a creature from another planet. Have you ever seen a UFO (unidentified flying object)?  I think I've seen UFOs a few times.  I also know all the words to Purple People Eater!!

8) Also in 1958, Americans were watching 77 Sunset Strip. The show revolved around the LA-based private investigators whose office was at that address. Who is your favorite TV PI?  I like lots of PIs because those are the shows I watch most often.  I especially like British detectives:  Vera, Barnaby, all in Death in Paradise, Murdock, Luther...  etc., etc.

9) Random question -- In the 1950s, stewardesses used to famously ask passengers, "Coffee, tea, or milk?" If asked that right now, which of these three beverages would you prefer?  Coffee.

Peace and Hugs!!

I love You Lord, for Your mercy never fails me
All my days I’ve been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up, until I lay my head
All, I will sing of the goodness of God

  1. I have a funny story about the "coffee, tea, or milk" quote. I think there was a movie, I don't remember which one, but someone said, "coffee, tea, or me?" Well, for some stupid reason that stuck in my head, and I was serving coffee, tea, or whatever at a church fellowship, and when I went up to one of the elders of the church to serve him, I let that stupid quote slip out...and then I realized what I'd said as his eyebrows shot up and he looked at me incredulously, and then we both had a good laugh, thankfully...he had a good sense of humor and I was extremely embarrassed as I tried to explain myself, and only got in deeper and deeper...it was funny but not so funny, as I was the Pastor's wife, you see! LOL. I had a tendency to "open mouth, insert foot" at the worst possible times. I am better now that I'm older and wiser, but still anything is possible...LOL. Okay, that's all I thought of while reading your post...and I did enjoy your post. Danon still in the hospital? I never did find out what happened to him, but I am praying for him. Must be something serious to still be in the hospital. Glad you could spend some time with his wife and do some fun things together. You are a wonderful friend! Have a lovely day.

    1. Pam, he had back surgery and is now on the physical therapy floor for 10-14 days of PT/OT. It was a tough surgery and he needs the professionals to keep him working on it. It they sent him home, he would be at the office instead of at home working on PT (those are my words and thoughts, knowing him). He is doing fine and sounds like his old self on the phone.

  8. I loved the old Doris Day movies!! My mom told me that Purple People Eater was playing in the delivery room when I was born (in 1958)!! I was the object of office gossip when I was young because I was the youngest person every promoted to that position in the company and people thought I had slept with my boss to get the job. I didn't but he was having an affair with someone EVEN younger than me!!

  9. Inviting Mali to join your Thursday suppers is such a thoughtful gesture! One of the first movies I remember seeing was a Doris Day flick (Pillow Talk?). Yes, I still remember the lyrics to Purple People Eater -- wasn't that a fun sing-along? Count me as a "bag holder" too; anything faster than a merry-go-round was "noooo way." (Coward, party of one. lol)

  10. I love the Pirates of the Caribbean ride...all the old rides at Disney, really. Most of them were "dark" rides and those are always my favorites. Sorry to be so late getting around. Yesterday turned out to be a lot busier than expected. Have a blessed Sunday!

  11. Definitely the Merry-Go-Round, I ride one today if I could. Doris Day, one of the best, just my opinion. AND I may have seen a One Eyed, One Horned Flying Purple People Eater in my day. lol
