Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Bobby's Girl

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Bobby's Girl (1962)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Marcie Blane confesses she sits at home, hoping Bobby will call her. Do you owe anyone a phone call or email?  My family knows I am horrible about phone calls.  Emails are easy to answer and so are texts and FB messages.  I am also terrible about cards but I do try.

2) We know Marcie wants to be Bobby's Girl. Let's play the Google Game and find out what you want. Go to your favorite search engine, keystroke your name and "wants," and then search. (For example: "Samantha wants" led us to a math problem that begins: "Samantha wants to purchase a new dress ... " Crazy Sam was tempted to read on because her wardrobe could use sprucing up.) What does Google tell us you want?  Terri wants to learn about areas that could be volcanically active.

3) This hit record was an accident. Marcie Blaine had just graduated from high school and had a few days before she had to take off for her summer job as a camp counselor. A friend asked her to record a couple songs he'd written, just so he could play them for record labels and song publishers. Her friend was hoping somehow an established star would hear the songs, record them and make one of them a hit. Instead, a producer at Seville Records said he wanted not just the songs but especially the unknown girl who was singing them, and Marcie became a recording artist. Tell us about a favor you're very glad you did for a friend.  I am happy to help out a friend and don't ever expect anything in return.

4) By the time summer was over, and Marcie's gig as a counselor was done, she was #3 on the charts. Her record stayed in the "Hot 100" for 19 weeks and, for the second half of 1962, she was the top-selling female singer in the US. What female singer do you listen to most often?  I listen to SiriusXM Sinatra or 40s most often, so many of the old-time singers. Ella, Doris, Rosemary, Peggy...

5) After "Bobby's Girl" took off, she recorded it in German for the European market. Only she didn't speak German, so she sang it phonetically. Can you sing any songs in a language other than English?  No.  Just a few words in Latin from some of the hymns.

6) Seville rushed Marcie into the studio to make more records. None of them charted higher than #68, and Marcie wasn't having fun. After a year of being a rock 'n roller, she enrolled at Queens College in New York City. What's the most recent class you took?  I haven't taken a class since I graduated from college 20 years ago.

7) In 1962, when this song was popular, the most popular baby names were Michael and Lisa. Are there any Michaels or Lisas in your life?  I have a niece named Lisa and I have a nephew named Michael.

8) Also in 1962, Marlene White, the first African American flight attendant for a major US airline, appeared on the cover of Jet magazine. What's the last magazine you flipped through?  The Lakelander.  Was it in print or online?  In print and free to pick up at lots of locations.

9) Random Question: After enjoying a long, relaxing weekend, do you find yourself more or less productive on Monday morning?  I don't know.  When I'm at work I get the work done. The day doesn't really matter.  Girls gotta do what a girls gotta do.

Peace & hugs!
Relax, God is in control!!

  1. Oh, I remember that song! 1962, I was only 12, but I had older brothers and a sister older than me, so I heard all the popular hit songs. I never wanted to be "Bobby's Girl", however. Never really knew any Bobby's that I'd be interested in. LOL. I enjoyed your answers. I do owe some phone calls...I had intended to call people since I didn't send out many Christmas cards this year...but so far I haven't quite gotten around to it. I know one song in a foreign language that I bet you know too...Ferro Jacques. (Are you sleeping?) Hope you have a pleasant day today. We have our first Community breakfast at our church since Covid hit. then we travel south through the forest to a family camp for a "Celebration of Life" for a cousin of John's who died from cancer last year, but couldn't have a funeral then. So it will be a long day...and kind of chilly. But at least no rain forecasted today. Talk to you later.

    1. Yes, I thought of Ferro Jacques but I don't know all the words to it.

  2. I remember that song although I would have only been 2, but I think I just like oldies. I am horrible about phone calls. I literally hate when the phone rings. I am much better at texting or emails. I suppose in my mind it takes less effort.

  3. In 1962, I was only 6 but I remember the song.
The last articles I read are in The Historical News. It's a local free newspaper that profiles different local Pioneer families and other genealogy information.
I hope the rest of your weekend is blessed and relaxing. xx

  5. As I have stated previously, you are amazing. Going to work and doing what needs to be done. I have no clue where some of these questions come from. I will say that I love your blogs when you write about yourself and your Joe...prayers dear girl.

  6. Except for bi-weekly calls from my son and 1x/month with my BF, I've come to loathe talking on the phone. eMail is still my go-to, no matter how passe they try to make it sound. Love your playlists; I'd be singing right along!

  8. I remembered the song... after I played it. My sisters were older than me and I'm sure I heard it on their record players. Phone calls! That reminds me, I really need to call my sister Deb. She lives in another state and it's been a few weeks since we've talked.

  9. That song was a little before my time, but I am Bobby's girl. :)
I'm terrible with cards too and keep trying to do better...
Google says - "Mari wants to see you smile more often". I do like to see smiles!
