For You
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks, we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions; however, here are today's questions!
Saturday 9: For You (1963)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this song, Rick Nelson tells us he'd give his girl the stars from the sky or a string of pearls. Have you more recently given or received a gift? What was it? I sent both of my sisters a little birthday gift plus a gift card.
2) By the time this record was released, Rick was already a show business veteran. He had been a regular on his family's sitcom, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, since it began airing on the radio when he was just 8. Most of us weren't child performers, but many of us had chores around the house. When you were young, did your parents give you an allowance? I got $3.00 a week for babysitting my brother and sisters after school, until Mom and Dad got home from work. That also included cleaning and cooking chores, most days.
9) Random question: When you were in high school, were you taller or shorter than your classmates? Or were you of average height? Is it okay to say I've always been above average? LOL I am the tall girl, in the middle of the back row in any group picture. I am usually taller than the boys, too. How about my kindergarten graduation...

3) The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet moved to TV, where fans saw Rick grow into a teen who drove a 1932 Roadster. The car really belonged to Tony La Masa, who collected classic cars and rented them out to TV and movie producers. Have you ever earned or raised money with your hobby? I sold paintings of dogs (from a picture) on velvet for $10.00 each when I was in high school. As an adult, I sold some of my jewelry on consignment in the museum's gift shop.
4) Paul McCartney has called Rick Nelson an "underrated singer who could really carry a song" and said Rick was one of his influences. Who do you believe you have influenced, professionally or personally? My parents, both professionally and personally. Joe influenced me in both areas as well. We are never too old to learn! (I read this wrong when I answered it last night. Who have I influenced? As a supervisor, hopefully, a few of my team members were influenced in a good way. As a step-mom, I may have had some influence on Joey and Jeff. As the oldest sibling... hopefully.)
5) This week's song was already an oldie by the time Rick performed it. "For You" was recorded the first time by Casa Loma Orchestra in 1933. In those days, most records were 78 rpm discs, thick and usually only able to hold 3 to 5 minutes of sound per side. Most record companies stopped producing them in the 1950s. Have you ever seen a "78?" I had ALL of my mom's 78s, and we had a record player that would play 78s. They sounded scratchy, but we had fun listening to them. I brought them to Florida with me, but I can't remember where they went then, or who got them. Many of them got broken. They were very delicate, made of a clay-like material.
6) The lyrics to "For You" were written by Al Dubin. After Al left college, he supported himself as a singing waiter. That's really two jobs in one. Which would you do better at: singer or server? I am not a singer. I tell people I have a 5-note range! So I guess that leaves server. I've been a server and hope I never have to do it again.
7) The music was written by Joe Burke, whose last hit song was "Rambling Rose," recorded in 1948 by Perry Como. Have you ever heard of Perry Como? Of course, I've heard of Perry! I'm an oldie, but goodie!!
8) In 1963, when Ricky's recording was on the charts, the Zip Code was introduced. How many different Zips have you lived in? Since 1963, I think there have been nine different zip codes. Yikes!

or third grade (3rd from the left, back row)...
(and on and on)
My friend, Dee Ann, is almost as tall, 3rd from the right.
(Dee Ann and I went to different schools in 4th grade. I
think her last name was Denton, but I'm not sure.)
Thanks for stopping by today!! Happy Saturday!
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

It is always nice to photos of ourselves when we were younger, smiles. Wishing you a lovely day, Terri.
ReplyDeleteNice photos!
ReplyDeleteRegarding #8, my answer is 29. I have lived in 29 different zip codes 1963-2026, PLUS 2 addresses in Canada. (I don't remember if we had zip codes there)
ReplyDeleteI had to figure that out on a piece of scrap paper, so this is correct. But I've made no secret of the fact that my life has been made up of many relocations due to the careers of both my father and my first husband.
Wow, selling your paintings and jewelry. That is so awesome. I bet you would have a lot of orders for those pet paintings these days. Jewelry too.
ReplyDeleteI love your pictures. You are so tall. That is a good thing.

I wish I was taller - I think of the three girls you were the tallest. Of course I was the shortest.
ReplyDeleteDear Terri, I love the old photos!!! I was short...and still am! I am 5 feet and one quarter inch tall! LOL! I have a cousin (now deceased), who was 6 foot 4!!! I love the hymn!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the " old school" photos!
ReplyDeleteI so love these "olden" photographs! Funny, I've never worked as a server but have thought that's something I could do well. Maybe, because that's one of my "hot" buttons .... it doesn't seem so hard to make people happy if one really makes an effort. (Am I hopelessly naive?)
ReplyDeleteI still love listening to Perry Como!
I enjoyed the photos!
ReplyDeleteI used to love babysitting for neighbours. I got £10 for about 5 hours of sitting watching TV while the little ones were asleep.
ReplyDeleteI am not a singer either, I can't hold a tune at all.
I've heard of Perry Como and know quite a few of his songs but I suspect it's from them being released by other artists.
