Got My Mind Set on You

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here are today's questions!
Saturday 9: Got My Mind Set On You (1987)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this song, George Harrison tells us he's willing to devote his money, patience, and time to his girlfriend. Of those three things, which can you most easily spare? I have to say time because patience is usually on short supply, as is my money. LOL
2) This song had long been a favorite of George's. He first heard it in 1963 when visiting his sister in the United States. He couldn't get the tune out of his mind and bought the record by James Ray. Do you have an earworm -- a song that, once you hear it, keeps repeating in your head? Nope.
3) Months later, in February 1964, the Beatles made their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. 73 million viewers saw them, and an astonishing 45.3% of the TV sets in America were tuned in to the show. In addition to the Beatles, Ed Sullivan used his show to introduce Elvis, The Rolling Stones, and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show ran for 23 years and reruns are now shown in syndication. Have you ever seen it? Ed Sullivan was on our TV every week, and I was one of those 73 million who watched the Beatles debut on American TV.
4) While most of the best-loved and most recognized Beatles songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, it was George who penned "Something." Frank Sinatra called that song "the greatest love song of the last 50 years." What's your favorite love song? When A Man Loves a Woman (Percy Sledge or Michael Bolton)
5) This praise represented a big change for Frank, who predicted in 1964 that the Beatles would be "of no lasting importance." Tell us about something you have changed your mind about. I don't know if I've changed my mind about things, or just changed my course over these last two years without Joe in my life. I'm stronger and (perhaps) a little smarter. I HOPE I'm smarter.
6) Tom Petty, who went on to have more than 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, credits George Harrison as a major influence on his music. Tell us about someone who influenced your professional life. Y'all are tired of me saying "Joe" but he really influenced me during my 20 years at the Museum. I was not a trained accountant. He was a CPA and taught me so much, gave me the courage to become more than a bookkeeper, and to believe in myself. I miss him and his wise counsel every day and in every way.
7) In 1987, when George's recording of "I Got My Mind Set on You" was popular, a squirrel unexpectedly made headlines. The furry fellow closed down the Nasdaq Stock Exchange when he chewed through a phone line. Do you often see squirrels where you live? There are squirrels everywhere. They are cute and they also cause lots of damage.
8) Also in 1987, third-generation race car driver Marco Andretti was born. Naturally, the skills required by a race car driver are unique. For example, while we know he can control a car at upwards of 230 mph at Indy, we have no idea if Marco Andretti is good at parallel parking in front of the local post office. How about you? Do you struggle with parallel parking? I can usually parallel park okay but I am happier to pull through!! LOL
9) Random question: When you woke up this morning, were you ready to face the day? Or do you wish you could have rolled over and snoozed a little longer? I've always been a morning person so am usually ready to face the day. I am looking forward to sleeping a little later than 5:30 when I can "retire" again one of these days.
I like that song and now it may be stuck in my head. I don't have a certain song that happens too, but that ear worm thing does happen.
ReplyDeleteI think you are strong and smart and I know Joe would be proud of you.
I'm more a night person, but I do pop right out of bed and get going in the morning. Bob says he needs coffee before he can talk. :)
Even though I'm a child of the 70s-80s I've never been a Beatles fan. I don't know why they were so popular. Ringo's songs were kinda cute, other than that, nah. *giggle*
ReplyDeleteI think we all change course from time to time. Even though we who trust and believe in Jesus and have His guide lines, we are all just trying to get outta this life without going coo coo for cocoa puffs, right?! *lol* At least I am. I shake my head at myself many times and think, "Why did I do that?!" God allows U-turns for which I am very thankful.
Good post. Prayers for all of us to Stand Firm and be strong in Christ.
Love xx
I was never a big Beatles fan either, Pam. I leaned more to the Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night, Eagles, etc. I also love the mo-town sound and loved the Temptations, Aretha...
DeleteI was watching Ed Sullivan and sitting there trying not to scream and cry...my parents wouldn't permit me to go crazy over them and would have turned it off if I got too crazy. LOL. But yes, I remember all the Ed Sullivan greatest shows like that. I loved the Beatles during my high school years, but later when they kind of went too crazy and more into the hippy movement/drug culture I tuned them out. I did like this song of George's later. George was always my favorite Beatle anyway. There was just "Something" about him. It's interesting that you and I both ended up doing accounting for our final "big job" before retirement. I was not formally trained in accounting either and had never been a good math student. But I enjoyed the challenge and the organizational skills it took to manage the financial and human resource issues of a large church...although there were many days that I did a lot of praying at my desk... I would have loved to have had Joe come teach me how to handle some tricky financial issues. I just muddled through and with God's help somehow it came out all right. Hey, guess what? We are retired and we still wake up at 5:30 many mornings. Sometimes I manage to stay in bed until 6:00, but rarely past that. I am a morning person too and hate to miss the sunrise. However, we do look forward to our afternoon nap each day, I must admit. LOL. One of the "perks" of being retired. I hope you have a relaxing and enjoyable weekend!
ReplyDeleteIt really does feel good to sleep a little later...but then we go to bed later too. Loved watching the Beatles...what great memories!
ReplyDeleteYep, Ed Sullivan was 'appointment television' -- yet for some reason, my parents were watching something else. (Forewarned, perhaps? Hmmmm) The next day at school our Social Studies teacher gave a pop quiz which included "Who are John, Paul, George and Ringo" -- of course, I was the only soul who had no idea.
ReplyDeleteI'm right there with you on time (v. patience) and being an early morning person. But you know, I've never had to parallel park in my life, even in Drivers Ed. This gal ain't about to start now, lol.
Little tidbit. Davy Jones, who would later become one of the Monkees, was on the same episode of Ed Sullivan as the first appearance of the Beatles. At the time Jones was starring as the Artful Dodger in “Oliver!” On Broadway.
ReplyDelete#3 I was watching Ed Sullivan that night, too. We rushed home from Sunday night church service to catch the Beatles. “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” was the song, I’m pretty sure.
ReplyDelete#5 I know I am smarter for having lost Tom. Painful as the experience has been, I am now wiser in several ways.
#7 I nearly had a stand-off with a near-sighted squirrel this morning while on my bike. He was in the street literally running straight for me and then suddenly veered off to the side. He needs glasses!!!
I vividly remember the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Terri. My grandparents always watched that show, so I know, too, that's where we were when that event occurred.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Me cable show his tapes every Sunday night in our market..Brings back so many memories.
ReplyDeletePatience is not a virtue of mine, LOL. Have a beautiful Sunday. smiles
ReplyDeleteYou have exhibited so much strength, courage and grace since Joe's passing and are a wonderful example to the rest of us. I think you must have been pretty brave anyway to take on an accounting job when that wasn't something you were trained to do!
