Thanks to our Hodgepodge hostess, Joyce, for this week's fun!  Join in HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions Volume 391

From this Side of the Pond
1. Just your weekly mid-week reminder that it's fall y'all and it's my favorite. I love nearly all the flavors of fall but let's weigh in with an either-or today...pumpkin or
cranberryhot apple cider or pumpkin spice latte? cinnamon or maple? apple or pear? ginger or sage? carrot or butternut squash? Yes, you have to choose. What's a favorite dish made with one of the flavors listed here?  I LOVE fresh cranberry sauce made from scratch for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Joe only likes the gelatinous cranberry sauce from a can.  We usually have both!

2. Do you miss traveling?  We don't travel that much anyway, so no.  In this season of almost no travel do you think you've grown anxious or fearful about traveling again?  No. Or has all this staying home not going anywhere made you restless to get out and see the world?  No.  What book have you read or what movie have you watched that has inspired you to travel?  Just not applicable.  We aren't big travelers but would have gone to PA for Joe's brother's funeral if not for the pandemic.

3. A time you felt like you were 'flying by the seat of your pants'? Explain.  It was probably 30+ years ago when we bought a house here in Lakeland and moved without jobs or even job prospects.  But it all worked out and we are so happy to be where we are today!

4. Do you struggle with road rage or are you more of a 'Sunday driver'? Do you like to be 'in the driver's seat (literally and/or figuratively speaking)I do all of the driving now and have for several years.  Joe is 83 years old and knows he shouldn't drive more than just close to home (and not then, very often).  I don't turn to road rage but I do get impatient with drivers.  My dad taught me to drive and I say that I turn into him when I'm behind the wheel.  I do struggle with patience.  I am getting better - so much so that Joe will speak up about a driver (sometimes) before I make a comment.  Ha!

5. Something you've recently 'put the brakes on'?   I am canceling our house cleaner.  My knees are good now.  I still don't get on the floor to scrub but I am perfectly able to keep the house clean and we don't need to spend that money anymore.  She only comes once a month. I do it in-between so why not do it all...

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Joe and I went to the clubhouse to get our mail yesterday and decided to drive through the community to check out how things look, see who might be back for the winter, and we stopped to chat with Cindy and Tony, who just got back from Minnesota.  It was so good to see them and catch up.  They want to go out to eat so we are agreed on next Tuesday, at Glory Days. Looking forward to that!

Mas Verde has joined in to celebrate law enforcement with a BLUE night this week, on the 24th.  We purchased blue light bulbs, a blue ribbon (made by a resident), and a sign from the  Lakeland Citizens' Police Academy Alumni Association (Joe & I are both graduates!).  Our doorways and yards are decorated and there are supposed to be lots of patrol cars driving through, starting at 7:30 pm, so we can greet them with applause and cheering. It should be fun! God bless our law enforcement officers!!

Peace & hugs!  God bless!

  1. That's so nice that your community is doing that for law enforcement.
    Have a great day!

  2. The neighborhood sounds like a good one to live in and I love y'all's idea of doing a blue night.
I am not much of a traveler as well. Just good ole home for me.

  3. I think its wonderful that your community is honoring the police in this way, Terri. More communities need to do the same! And driving? The only time I can really lose my patience is when I'm behind the wheel, and another driver does something extremely stupid. Thank goodness it never morphs into road rage though. :)
    Blessings!

  4. That is great your community is honoring the police. A couple of years ago, a local boy/police officer was murdered in Bath (a short drive from here) on a bridge. Folks still honor him by having the blue lightbulb.

    Have a beautiful day friend.

  5. What a great idea to celebrate the men in blue. Love it. As for fall flavors, I am a cinnamon fan. Apple over pumpkin pie but my favorite Thanksgiving pie is Pecan. it is hard to believe that the holidays will be upon us soon.

  6. I enjoyed all of your answers today.
    Glad your knees are better!
We like the whole cranberries sauce from a can and we also like pecan pie.
Have a good Wednesday my friend.

  7. Thankfully, neither of us are fans of cranberry. As a child I was fascinated how it sat there on the table and wriggled. Ha! Your community outreach is so cool! Wondering if Mas Verde has a designated activities director? Have a great day!

    1. We don't have a designated activities director. We aren't that kind of retirement community. We do have an HOA Board, two ladies who handle travel, and a woman who loves to do crafts with some of the women. There are lots of activities at the clubhouse but they just kind of happen according to interests. No one takes the lead. We have two managers but they don't mix with the home owners.

  8. Love the "support the blue" night for your community! What a wonderful idea!! You should take some pictures to share with us. Happy that more of your friends are coming back for the winter. I know that will liven things up in the neighborhood. Have your new neighbors moved in yet? We don't do much traveling either...John doesn't like driving in traffic. I like real cranberry sauce too, but I usually have some of each, and not that many around here eat any of it anyway. Usually just me and my sister if she is here. Have a wonderful week. I always enjoy visiting here.

    1. Our new neighbors won't be here permanently until April, when Chuck retires. Susan will be back and forth for a week or so each month. They are bringing her car down next month. He is a pastor at a Church of Christ in Illinois.

  11. I remember when you moved to your area... what a great experience with the people you've met & all the dinner dates you get with your community. Truly a blessing

  12. I am also an impatient driver. I get that from my mom!
I love that you are supporting the police!

  13. What a wonderful idea to show support for Law Enforcement!!! I'm sure they will appreciate it. This is a really good idea.

  14. I think I'm a pretty patient driver. I probably make other people impatient, hahaha!! Your story of moving to Florida is crazy and inspiring. If we didn't have so many grandchildren in the north we would be down there! When Sophie was little I always thought we would end up in Florida, but the other grandchildren had not been born yet, lol!

  15. I'm impressed that you are cancelling your house cleaner! I'm still working every day and my hubby is moving towards retirement and he keeps saying that we need to cancel but I'm just not ready!

  16. I'm glad your knees are good enough now to cancel your cleaner. Your community sounds so supportive of one another. I'm the main driver too.

  17. Oh I love the made from scratch cranberry sauce, too! The Professor tolerates it and allows me to have 'his portion'.
You sound a bit adventurous in moving with no job prospects. We've done that, but we are very adventurous.
    Enjoy your coming weekend!

  18. How nice your community is celebrating law enforcement. The bigger town near us just lost three officers, two to violence/crime and one in an auto accident and it's so incredibly sad. I love homemade cranberry sauce too, but we usually have both. I like the canned on my leftover turkey sandwich. Have a nice weekend!
