Beyond the Sea
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Beyond the Sea (1959)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This song mentions golden sands. When do you think you'll next visit the beach? Fortunately, we live in Florida and are only an hour from the Gulf of Mexico and her beautiful white sand beaches. We can go whenever we feel the need. We are 90 minutes from the Atlantic beaches, but prefer the Gulf.
2) Shortly after "Beyond the Sea" hit the charts, Bobby Darin met and married movie sweetheart Sandra Dee. Her squeaky-clean image is spoofed in the song, "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee," from Grease. Can you name another song from Grease? Two that come to mind are Summer Nights and Hopelessly Devoted.

3) Years earlier, Bobby had an ill-fated romance with singer Connie Francis. According to Ms. Francis, Darin wanted to marry her, but her father forbade it. Have you ever had a relationship that your parents disapproved of? Not really. They met one guy I was dating for awhile and I don't think they were crazy about him....but neither was I. They loved Joe, though.
4) Bobby was a Renaissance man: Grammy-winning singer, Oscar-nominated actor, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and an excellent chess player. Are you good at chess? Not really. I haven't played for years. Used to win now and then, but would be hard-pressed to give it my attention now.
5) A car buff, he drove a 1960 custom car that was so unique and spectacular it's now in a Detroit museum. The bright red paint was mixed with ground diamonds to ensure that it sparkled in the sun. Each of the four bucket seats had its own ac/heat control and radio speaker. The steering wheel was slightly squared for easier handling. What features would your dream car have? Right now, just a built-in GPS so I don't have to use my portable, and maybe we could throw in a back-up camera. I've always maintained that an automobile just needs to get you from point A to point B. If it runs and is at least somewhat comfortable, it's okay. If I won big in the lotto, though, I might spend some money on a Land Rover.
7) When he was just 8 years old, Bobby Darin was stricken with rheumatic fever, and the disease left him with a dangerously weakened heart. Did you spend much time in the hospital when you were a kid? When I was born, I came into the world face first and had blood in my spinal fluid. They whisked me away to Children's Hospital for three days. I am told it was a great homecoming when they could finally get me out of there and into my mom's arms, who had just also been released from the hospital. I also had my tonsils removed at age three and was in the hospital three days, I believe.
8) In 1959, when "Beyond the Sea" was popular, Alaska became our 49th state. What comes to mind when you think of Alaska? Snow, beautiful landscapes, ice and water, whales.... I also have a classmate who lives there and posts on Facebook frequently. He takes people out on fishing trips, so I also think of his posts.
9) In 1959, Conair introduced the first hair dryer developed for home use. Is there a hair dryer in your bathroom right now? There is one in our bathroom, and one in the guest bathroom drawer as well. I've never been without a hairdryer, though they sure have changed over the years. One like this fit over my big pink plastic curlers....
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

I wondered where you been, Terri...praying you get better. I had to chuckle on #3-my family still don't like my husband, and it has been 34 years total-27 married. Sad, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteBlessings (and I prefer the Gulf too)
I would love to see Bobby Darin's car! My sister had to take her car in to have the airbags changed in September. There was a possibility of metal in them. The loaner car they gave her to use had a backup camera - very cool. Then my brother-in-law posted a photo of a pink Caddy that he saw in Batavia. Love old cars! Hope you're having a good Saturday. It's raining here.
ReplyDeleteSorry you've been sick again..you just got over that nasty cold. HOPE you have a great weekend. Take care.
ReplyDeleteAs a mom who had 3 out of 4 kids spend days, up to a month, in the NICU, I can guarantee you that you are correct about your homecoming! YAY!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry you are still battling health issues. Hope you get well soon. I am with you about the car question. It has one purpose and that is to get me there safely and with no mishaps. Comfortable is nice, and love my gps. I still prefer looking out side and rear view mirrors over having the back up camera.
ReplyDeleteBoring is good if there is contentment. :-) Get well.
It's good to hear from you. I'll be praying for you to feel better. This was a fun one. Now I have the Sandra Dee song in my head!
ReplyDeleteI loved Bobby Darin. I did date a guy my folks were not fond of, glad I met my hubby cause the other one had some probs thru life. When I think of Alaska I think of my best friend who moved there in Jr. High. Somehow we lost track of each other and so wish I could find her. I had one of those hair dryers. I like my hand held one so much better, lol... Have a wonderful rest of the weekend and hope you feel better soon. Hugs, LJ
