Labor Day

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4, where we ask 4 questions every week.

 Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 7. The original Labor Day was September 5, 1882, when over 10,000 workers took to the streets to protest 12-hour workdays for low wages and cruel practices of employers.

The first official Labor Day was on September 7th in Oregon.

President Grover Cleveland signed on for the first official federal observance of Labor Day following the Pullman Strike, in which government forces shot dead many unarmed workers striking over dramatic wage cuts and dramatic cost of living increases in a company town.  Workers' pay was cut by 30%, and they could not afford basic food.  When a group of men tried to negotiate with Pullman, they were fired, and 34 of them were killed by government forces.

1. How do you observe Labor Day, and were you aware of its background?  Yes, I'm aware of its history.  I didn't do anything special to observe it yesterday.

2. Many holidays become just a day off rather than a real commemoration of an event. How do you propose we can remedy that?  I'm retired now, so it's just another day for me.  I think it should be taught in schools, as it was when I was in school.  Our history is being forgotten.

3. What is the most labor-intensive job or activity you have done?  I had a part-time job cleaning motel rooms when I was just out of high school.  My full-time career in accounting was mentally demanding.  LOL

   

4. If your income were cut by 30%, could you still survive?  What would you do?  I would survive, but it wouldn't be easy or pretty.  When you are on Social Security, it isn't easy to begin with.  If our working life's investment in Social Security continues to be squandered by the government, it will all be gone one day.  Let's just not go into the 1968 politics of all that.

September 7th: Monday Musings

 

Happy Labor Day Monday!  We celebrate this holiday in America to honor the contributions, achievements, and sacrifices of ALL working people.  It is a day off to relax and be with friends and family.  It also marks the unofficial end of summer.  I'm all in for the relaxing part and being done with summer!!

Last Thursday, the dinner group went to Reececliff (diner) for dinner.  It's not my favorite, but I go more for the camaraderie than the food.  It's a group of dear friends.  There were only six of us last week.  We are trying a new-to-the-group Italian place this week called Romeo's.  I've been there several times.  It's good.

Friday was my friend Shirley's 90th birthday.  She came with her son, David, and Anne joined us for pizza and cake, too.  It was a nice get-together, and Shirley seemed touched by the attention.  I took pictures before they arrived and got one of Shirley, but forgot to get a selfie of all of us.

Saturday was a lazy day for me.  I stripped the bed and washed the sheets. It was also Joe's birthday, which I always remember by posting his photo on Facebook.  He would love knowing how many people expressed their love for him.  It helped me honor his memory as well.  This picture was in 2020...

I was a greeter at church yesterday.  Came home and did my usual two loads of laundry.  Not much else!!

I didn't sign up for the potluck at the clubhouse today.  I went to the one for the 4th of July, but wasn't feeling it for today.  Humbug!  LOL

I was scheduled for my annual mammogram tomorrow, but they called to reschedule for later in the month because the machines are down.  That's a first for me, but no big deal.  The roofers are supposed to be here early in the morning.  I have a routine appointment with the cardiologist on Wednesday morning, a hair appointment on Wednesday afternoon, Bible study on Thursday, dinner out with the group in the evening, and my small group from church here for dinner on Friday evening.  Busy, but not crazy busy!

1) In this song, Lee Dorsey sings that at 5:00 he's already on the job. What were you doing this morning at 5:00 AM?  Sleeping!

2) He's worked so hard all week that he's too tired to enjoy his weekend. What are you doing for fun this holiday weekend?  Nothing special!!  Church on Sunday.

3) Lee Dorsey was raised in Portland Oregon, home of the Portland Trailblazers. The NBA season kicks off next month. Do you have a favorite basketball team?  Not a big basketball fan, but Joe followed the Villanova Basketball (college) team.

 

4) This song was written by Allen Toussaint, who had a long career as a composer and producer. He produced Fats Domino in the late 1950s and worked with Elvis Costello and Paul McCartney into the new millennium. What job have you held the longest?  I was the Administrator (accounting, HR, operations) at Polk Museum of Art for 20 1/2 years.

 

5) In 1966, the year this song was popular, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey was born. Are you a good cook?  Passable.  I don't do fancy.

6) 1966 was the year when more Americans purchased color TVs and black and white sets. When you were a kid, did your family have a black and white TV?  I was a kid in the 50s & 60s.  We didn't have a color TV until I was in junior high school (mid-60s).

August 4th: Friday Focus

 

Sliding into Friday again!  And we have rain!!  Still much-needed rain!

I mentioned last week that the roofers were coming on Monday about the continuing leak in the carport-turned-into-my she-shed roof.  The nice young man gave me pictures and an estimate of $1,200.  This is after the $1,600 I paid a year ago.  The first company is no longer in business, which doesn't surprise me now.  Ouch.  Just ouch.  

Nice way to start the week, but I can't ignore the leak.  The previous company advertised in our community's newsletter and had done work for others here.  We never really know, I guess.  This new company has been in business for 53 years and has nothing but good references.  Fingers crossed.

I got my two boys a new cat tree.  They are still exploring it and trying to see which one claims which level...  Vinny (orange) can be a bully.  IYKYK

Today is my friend Shirley's 90th birthday!!  We are celebrating with pizza and birthday cake at 3:30.  I need to do some cleaning this morning before I go to Publix for the cake.  DoorDash will bring the pizza!  It's all about celebrating friendships and a 90th birthday.  Pizza is her favorite, so pizza it is.

I have nothing on my calendar for tomorrow, except to remember my sweet Joe's birthday (September 5th).  Miss him every day.

This Sunday is my Sunday to be a greeter at church.  Cindy and I pair up at the main entrance.  Always enjoyable!!  

No plans for Labor Day.  There is a potluck at the Clubhouse, but I didn't sign up for it this year.  This Tuesday is my annual mammogram (ugh), I see the cardiologist on Wednesday (routine), and I have a haircut scheduled in the afternoon.  Thursday is Bible study and the MV dinner group, and I am hosting my small group on Friday evening.  Busy, but good busy.  How does your week look?

My thoughts:  Navy is not a good color for me, but I couldn't wear this dress now, anyway!  I could love it in a different color, but I still couldn't wear it!  As for the shoes, I will go for the classic #1 today.  What are your thoughts?

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 669

1. What's something you wanted to do this summer that you never got around to doing?  I had no summer plans made to consider not doing.  It's too hot in Florida to get out and go.  I've been happy in the AC, waiting for cooler temps!

2. Were you the student who sat in the front row or hid in the back of the class? If you could go back and take one high school class again just for fun, which would it be?  I enjoyed school and usually sat in the middle if seats weren't assigned.  If they were assigned alphabetically, my maiden name is Kelly, which put me smack in the middle anyway!  I loved biology, art, and English classes.  Now, I might go back for that geometry class I didn't do well in (C) and try it again for an A.

3. What characteristics do you think are essential in a good teacher (this can be applied to anyone who teaches, not just classroom teachers)?  Patience and a love for the job.  True for most professions, though!

4. September 2nd is National Grits Day. Have you ever eaten grits? Are you a fan? If so, how do you like yours? Would people describe you as 'having grit'?  I live in the South and have had grits many times.  There are grits in my pantry right now.  For breakfast, I put a little butter on them and perhaps some syrup.  I enjoy shrimp and grits often in restaurants.  Yes, I do have some grit, I think.

5. What's something you're never too old or too young to enjoy?  A baby's laughter.  A cold drink on a hot day.  Lunch with friends.  God's grace and mercy.  I could keep going!!

6. Insert your own random thought here.  It has nothing to do with the subjects here, but I got three bags of clothing donated to a local charity after cleaning out my closet!!  It feels good to be done with that!!

Tradition

 

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.  

Tradition is an important part of any family or community, and so important that people will fight to be sure they are not neglected or done away with.

From the first day of Autumn to Halloween, All Saints' Day, and Thanksgiving, autumn brings many different traditions from all around the world.

School kids cut out paper leaves, pumpkins, etc. Homemakers change decor to reflect the new season.  Sweaters come out of storage... the weather is changing.

1. Why is tradition important to you?  Traditions provide an anchor, I think, and help to define who you are and where you came from.  

2. Have family traditions helped to shape who you are?  Definitely.  I've been blessed by traditions of love and caring, and they have helped to define my values and identity. 

3. Do you believe that tradition helps a community or shapes the unity of family and community?  Yes.  I think this is especially true for religious traditions, and it has been true in my Christian upbringing and the way I believe and live today.

4. Are there any traditions you would like to bring back, and why?  Respect and kindness seem to be lacking in some age groups today.  Prayer in schools.  Teaching patriotism and history in schools.  All of that and more.  It does make me sad that our history and traditions have been largely forgotten by younger generations, and that educators either don't care or aren't allowed to teach the way I was taught.  I'm speaking generally about our public schools.
