May 2nd: The Saturday 9

I'll Get By

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks, we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love answering questions, so here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: I'll Get By (As Long as I Have You) – 1944

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) "I'll Get By" was a very popular song in the 1940s, and we're taking a look at the recording by Dick Haymes and Harry James because it got the most airplay. Can you think of another song that has been recorded by more than one artist?  Any by Simon & Garfunkel:  Bridge Over Troubled Water; Mrs. Robinson;  The Sound of Silence; I Am A Rock...

2) In this week's song, vocalist Dick Haymes sings that he won't complain about the rain. Do you have any complaints about the weather this morning?  Only that we aren't getting the rain we thought was coming this weekend.  Now the sun is shining, and the draught continues.

3) Dick was briefly married to movie queen Rita Hayworth. Known as The Love Goddess and The Strawberry Blonde, Rita was famous for her magnificent mane. She dyed her dark brown hair red to get attention, and it worked. Have you ever experimented with a different color? If yes, were you happy with the results?  No.  When I started getting gray, I did have highlights and lowlights put in with that tin foil all over my head.  It was too expensive when I retired.  Now I'm all gray.

4) Dick was the lead vocalist of the Harry James orchestra. Like Dick, Harry had a movie star wife. Betty Grable was famous for her legs. Her bathing suit poster inspired hosiery manufacturers to single out her perfectly proportioned thighs, calves, and ankles. Betty herself joked, "I'm a star for two reasons, and I'm standing on them."  What do you think is your best (physical) trait?  At nearly 75 years old, I can't single out anything.  When I was younger and thinner, my height singled me out.  I was that tall girl (at nearly 6 feet).  Yes, I'm still tall, but have shrunk to 5' 10".

5) Betty's legs weren't the only legs that fascinated Harry. He was known for his stable of thoroughbred racehorses. Have you ever been to the races?  No.  I've never been to a horse race.

6) Teenaged Harry played trumpet with The Beaumont High School Royal Purple Band. Did you belong to groups or clubs while you were in high school?  I started playing trumpet in 5th grade and was in the marching and concert bands through my senior year of high school.  My mom played trumpet when she was in high school, and she loved Harry James (just by the way).

7) In addition to "I'll Get By," Judy Garland's "Trolley Song" topped the charts in 1944. When did you most recently take public transportation?  I flew north, if air travel counts.  And I also took an Uber from the airport to the hotel while up that way last summer.

8) Also in 1944, Diana Ross was born. First with the Supremes, then as a solo artist, she has sold more than 100 million records, making her one of America's most successful female singers. Who is your all-time favorite "girl singer"?  I can't say I have a favorite - male or female, but I was always amazed at Linda Ronstadt's range.

9) Random question – Last week, we asked about the garage. Let's turn our attention to the glove compartment (aka glove box). What have you got in there?  The car's manual, receipts for work done on the car, a spare key, a tire air gauge, and deposit slips for the bank.  I think that's all.

I will be catching up this weekend!!

Peace and Hugs!!

It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

  1. I'm sorry the rain didn't come! We have sunshine this morning but rain predicted again this afternoon. The clouds are confused about where they need to be.

  2. My mom kept so much stuff in her glove box. I have no idea why. I barely have anything in mine. I did think of one more thing...my ice scraper for when we get ice and snow. If I am home, I bring it in the house, but I like to have one if I am at work. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  3. I can imagine you playing trumpet for some reason. I too am gray but I do lowlight my hair. Not quite ready to be all gray.

  4. I don't color my hair - it's mostly white. I like it.
Oh, that drought of yours is maddening. I hate to say it, but you need some tropical storms to fill up your lakes and reservoirs. I do hope you will get some rain. When we were in our drought it was five years - and it took a few years to recoup. We're good now but California has a history of drought, so another one is probably right around the corner.

  5. I, too, went natural (white) when I remembered I enjoy eating well moreso than pricey salon visits.
    Love Linda Ronstadt!

  6. As a teen, I loved anything Simon and Garfunkel did and even had a poster of the duo in my room. I learned to play so many of those songs on my guitar as I sang them, too. Horse races? Not for me! Blessings, Terri!

  7. Yeah, the rain really underperfomed here as well. We did get a good thunderstorm and rain for a couple of hours, but that was it, and it blew away rather than continuing for the rest of the day as predicted. I missed the Kentucky Derby yesterday because we don't pay for that station on our tv. We tried to get it, but gave up. I've never been to a horse race in person. I don't color my hair either. Little by little the white hairs are starting to infiltrate the hair that used to be red and now is more brown/auburn. But like you, I'm 75+ and figure I might as well act my age. LOL. Hope you have a blessed Sunday!

  8. Yesterday, it rained/stormed pretty good here in Ocala. Sigh, I need to get my hair done, and I don't like being gray, lol. Wishing you a great day, Terri.
