August 2nd: Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  Y'all can join the fun HERE!

Jive Talkin'

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions; however, here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: Jive Talkin' (1975)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

This month, we're going to recall Summer Songs. These will all be records that topped the charts during August.

1) Number 1 on the charts in August 50 years ago, "Jive Talkin'" was originally called "Drive Talkin'," because it was inspired by the "chunka-chunka" sound the Bee Gees' car made as it rolled over the bridge from Biscayne Bay to Miami every morning. Tell us about a drive you make regularly. What do you love, or hate, about it?  Now that I'm retired (again), the most regular drive I make is to "my" Publix and, on Sundays, to church.  I don't love or hate either.

2) Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb always enjoyed singing together and, as kids, practiced their harmonies in the bathroom because that's where the acoustics were best. Do you sing in the shower?  Not ever!  LOL

3) Early in their career, the brothers wrote and recorded a radio jingle for Coca-Cola. If we were to peer into your refrigerator right now, would we find any carbonated beverages?  In my extra fridge, in the back room, there are a few cans of Diet Pepsi, Diet Gingerale, and a few beers (not sure of the brand).  I don't drink carbonated beverages often and don't drink beer.  I keep some on hand to offer guests.  The beer was a Publix BOGO, so I got two six-packs.  Two of my friends said it was good.  I wouldn't know.

4) Though their sound depended on tight harmonies, all three Bee Gees were heavy smokers, which is bad for the throat. Do you smoke? Are there smokers/vapers in your life?  I did smoke many years ago, but quit cold turkey in 1983.  I only smoked for a couple of years and not more than a pack a day, if that.  My mom smoked, but quit when we were all little.  Dad smoked off and on, including pipes.  My youngest sister smokes now.

5) Robin Gibb agreed to perform on the CD Sesame Street Fever so his kids could meet Cookie Monster. Who is your favorite Muppet?  I don't know all of the Muppets and never really watched them.  I guess I'll say Cookie Monster.

6) In addition to younger brother Andy, who also scored hit records, the Bee Gees have a sister, Lesley. Unlike her siblings, she didn't go into show business. Instead, she became a dog breeder. Tell us about a dog who holds a special place in your heart.  I've only had two dogs.  Happy was our childhood dog, and I had a collie named Sergeant Pepper (Sarge).  They both hold a special place in my heart.

Happy, me, Tammy, and Patti

Yes, me with long hair and a mini-dress.  That's Sarge.

Let's look at the summer of 1975.

7) That summer, producer Lorne Michaels was auditioning talent for the Not Ready for Prime Time Players. This band of comedic performers would premiere that October in a new show called Saturday Night Live. In the days before DVRs and streaming, Saturday Night Live was considered "appointment television," a show you wanted to catch when it aired, so you made sure you were in front of a TV to hear "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Is there a show you go out of your way to watch when it airs? Or is most of your viewing either recorded or streamed?  I stream everything now.  I ditched cable six or seven years ago.  But I loved SNL when it first started.  Those early years can't be beat.

8) The top movie at the box office that summer was Jaws. Have you seen it?  Only about 500 times!  Our grandson, Tristan, LOVED Jaws, and we had to watch it every day when he visited.  He loved sharks and knew the names of every kind of shark you could show him.  He was 3 and 4 back then.  Yes, too young for all that gore, but he wasn't fazed (and his mom & dad knew).

9) In 1975, Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles was having a career season and won the second of his three Cy Young Awards. In 2012, he put all three trophies up for auction. As proud as he was of the awards, he said, "My priorities have changed," and the money would help pay for college for his grandchildren. Think about your belongings. Is there anything you would never part with at any price?  My wedding rings (mine and Joe's).

Peace and Hugs!

When one is embarrassed, usually the shortest way to get through with it is to quit talking or thinking about it a go at something else.  -- Abraham Lincoln

  1. I LOVE the picture of you with the long hair and that beautiful collie, Sarge. We had a collie like that when our kids were little. His name was Laddie. You looked lovely with long hair! That picture definitely has a 70's vibe! I enjoyed your answers. Glad you are back home and settled in!!

  3. I love the old photos!
Can you believe that I've never seen Jaws?
Interesting about smokers. The world has changed so much in that regard. I've had no smokers in my life, but I remember when I was a new nurse working on the neuro floor, patients could smoke in their rooms. And I remember having to hold cigarettes for quadriplegics so they could smoke.

    1. When Joe was 17 years old, he had to have a minor back surgery and he couldn't stay still. His doctor gave him cigaretes to calm him down. He smoked into adulthood, until asthma made him stop (and that's why I stopped!).

    2. The world has certainly changed. My mother and two of my aunts were smokers, but I don’t know anyone who smokes these days,

  4. I saw Jaws when it first came out. None of us wanted to swim at the beach that summer. LOL How fun about the Bee Gees and the questions! Driving around locally isn't bad, but I really dislike having to drive to Northern Virginia and my parents' house. UGH! Have a wonderful weekend, Terri!

  6. Well, it feels like chatting with a friend over coffee. Your Jaws story made me smile, and those wedding rings being priceless is so sweet.

  7. Those photos with your dogs are priceless, Terri! And I think everyone had long hair back in the day, especially when we got to those teenage years. Mine is still long because a short cut on me has never looked right. It's easy to care for, too. Have a blessed weekend!

  8. I loved seeing you with long hair! Loved the Bee gees too. Gosh there is one summer song I just loved and for the life of me I can't remember. If I do I will come back. My memory!

  9. Yes, I sing in the shower and no, I'm not a fan of Jaws. Saw the movie just this summer for the first time ever.

  10. Jive Talkin, what a song!
The shower is about the only place I am allowed to sing, I can't hold a tune!
I don't drink many carbonated drinks. I do enjoy the odd can of coca-cola but not very often.
We are so close to ditching cable now as we seem to stream everything.
I remember watching Jaws when I was probably too young for it and my brother had nightmares for weeks as he was even younger than me.

  11. Now that you mention it, I don't recall ever singing in the shower. My parents were beer aficionados, but I never could abide the taste. I now wear my mother's (wedding) ring, but my favorite is one she had fashioned from the metals of my father and grandparent's rings. While I'm not a big fan of jewelry, you're right. -- Not for any amount of money.

  12. I don't sing in the shower either! I did like the Bee Gee's but for summer, I think of my youth and the Beach Boys!!!

  13. Bee Gee's brings back so many memories of going dancing and having fun. Didn't know that about "Jive Talkin'". My favorite group or singer at that time, though, was Jimmy Buffett. Such a shame he's gone now.
I don't sing in the shower either. I just don't think about it.
My favorite Muppet is Animal the drummer and the Swedish Chef. They bring a smile to my face every time.
    Blessings.❣️
