Shout
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
This month, we're going to recall Summer Songs. These will all be records that topped the charts during August.
1) Number 1 on the charts in August 40 years ago, the lyrics to "Shout" encourage us to "let it all out." When is the last time you raised your voice? I hollered "good morning" to my neighbor, Anne. She was just getting home at the same time I pulled into my carport. She hollered back...
2) This week's featured artists, Tears for Fears, were a duo -- Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith -- who met as teenagers in Bath, the largest city in Somerset, England. Bath has been named one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe. Popular spa treatments include massages, facials, body scrubs and wraps, mineral baths, manicures, and pedicures. If you could treat yourself to a spa treatment today, which would you choose? What I would really enjoy is a facial. It's been too long since my last one. When I was working, I got one every six weeks. I'm not even sure if my aesthetician, Dawn, is still working.
3) When they first met, one of the things Roland and Curt bonded over was that they were both raised by single mothers. Who was your best friend during your teen years? What did you two bond over? My frequent readers know this answer. My BFF, Elaine, and I were the neighborhood tomboys. She lived across the street from us, and we loved Nancy Drew mysteries, liked to hike in the woods, and were in the marching band together. She was a year ahead of me in school. The girls I hung out with from my class were Karen and Mary. We are all still in touch, but Elaine is like a sister to me.
4) Curt's wife, Frances Pennington, has had a long career in marketing, beginning in the record business and transitioning to fashion. Which industry do you think you'd enjoy more -- music or fashion? Music.
5) Roland married his childhood sweetheart, Caroline Johnston. They were together for 35 years, until her death. Do you know whatever became of your childhood sweetheart? Archie was my "steady" in my sophomore year. He died a few years ago, but I understand he was married with children.
Let's look at the summer of 1985.
6) That summer, Chicago teenager Balu Natarajan won the National Spelling Bee. Are you a good speller? Terrible, and auto spell check has made me even terribler!! LOL
7) Tinker Bell took her first nightly flight at Walt Disney World in Florida. Do you recall which Disney movie introduced us to Tinker Bell? I think it was Peter Pan. I LOVED the movie version that starred Mary Martin as Peter Pan. That was a very long time ago. I am old.
8) Derek Hough was a baby in the summer of 1985. In 2007, he became a regular on Dancing with the Stars, acclaimed for his ballroom dancing. Are you good on the dance floor? Not anymore.
9) In 1985, Michael J. Fox became the first actor to have the #1 movie at the box office and the #1 TV show in the ratings. The movie was Back to the Future, and the TV show was Family Ties. Have you seen the movie? Were you a fan of the show? I didn't watch Family Ties, but I love the Back to the Future movies.
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. — Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, NIV

I loved Back to the Future - hard to believe it was that long ago!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a foot massage...but I would love it! The world of fashion needs a reset-I would love to give them ideas for real women! The tv show and the movie with MJFox I enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteI love how close you are to your friends. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

I've never had a facial, but that sounds heavenly. I used to be a good speller, but technology's such a crutch (*sigh*). I tell myself playing the NYT Spelling Bee (on line) every morning is educational. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure why, but I've never had a facial, Terri. Maybe, I need to spring for one. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteMary Martin, that brings back memories
ReplyDeleteIt's sad, but I don't think most kids grow up with that kind of friend these days...or use their imaginations the way we did. Nancy Drew? We'd have gotten along just fine. I've always loved a good mystery. Enjoy your Sunday, Terri!
ReplyDeleteYou and Elaine are so blessed to have such a long relationship. True friends for sure. Hope you're enjoying a great SONday!!
ReplyDeleteI never was a good dancer - lol. Hope you are having a good day.
ReplyDelete#5 ~ I don't even know if my high school "steady" is still alive or not. Last contact I had with him he had become a left-wing Communist lunatic. I mean really confrontational and hateful. We lost touch after that. That's sad as he used to be such a sweet, caring boy.
ReplyDeleteHope your day was blessed. 💖
