Come On-A My House
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!
Saturday 9: Come On-A My House (1951)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
9) Random question -- You're playing roulette and suddenly doubled your winnings. Do you walk away when you're ahead, or do you stay at the table to play your winning streak? If you are talking $5.00 I might be tempted to keep trying. If you are talking $5,000 I would definitely walk away.
Happy Weekend!!Saturday 9: Come On-A My House (1951)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this week's song, Rosemary Clooney offers us candy, peaches, pears, grapes, cake, etc. What tasty treat are you craving this morning? Fresh peaches would be wonderful but it's not the season. I'm not really craving fruit or sugar right now which is a very good thing.
2) The song was co-written by a pair of cousins more famous for their other jobs. William Saroyan was a Pulitzer Prize winning author and Ross Bagdasarian created Alvin and the Chipmunks. Tell us about one of your cousins. I am sad to say many of my cousins are deceased. I love my cousins so much and grew up with them. Bob and his wife Patti have two kids, a boy and a girl. Bob and Patti are retired from the school system in Ohio. Their daughter is a teacher and their son is in law-enforcement. When Bob retired, he was a Superintendent and had a school named for him! This was them visiting us at our first home in Lakeland, a long time ago!
3) The song was inspired by the cousins' recollection of their Armenian relatives encouraging friends and family to visit by promising lots of food. Who most recently invited you to their home? My former neighbors invited me to join their family on Sunday (tomorrow). What was the occasion? A retirement celebration!
4) This was a big hit for Rosemary Clooney. She got her start singing live on Cincinnati's WLW radio station. Today WLW is an all-news station. When you were a kid, what radio station did you tune into for the hits and new music? I had a little transistor radio and listened to WCOL (Columbus, Ohio). It was an AM station and played popular 60s music.
5) Rosemary was also an actress, appearing in motion pictures and made-for-TV movies. The most famous is 1954's White Christmas. Have you seen it? Oh my goodness, yes. I have the DVD and it is always watched during the Christmas season. Sometimes more than once. Love it.
5) Yes, Rosemary Clooney is related George Clooney. She was his aunt. She appeared with him on ER and received an Emmy Award nomination. Do you enjoy doctor shows? I do enjoy doctor/medical shows!
7) In 1951, when this song was #1, Yankees superstar Joe DiMaggio retired from baseball. He remained in the public eye, endorsing products and acting as Major League Baseball's ambassador around the world. His second marriage, a few years after his retirement, was almost as legendary as his baseball career. Without looking it up, do you know who his bride was? Yep. Marilyn Monroe.
8) Also in 1951, I Love Lucy premiered and has never been off the air since. That's right: for 72 years, without interruption, viewers have been entertained by the Ricardos and Mertzes. When you think of I Love Lucy, what's the first thing that comes to mind? Her genius and her red hair.
9) Random question -- You're playing roulette and suddenly doubled your winnings. Do you walk away when you're ahead, or do you stay at the table to play your winning streak? If you are talking $5.00 I might be tempted to keep trying. If you are talking $5,000 I would definitely walk away.
Jesus loves us, this I know!!

#5 ~ The only doctor shows I've watched is "Dr. G: Medical Examiner" (true tales) and "Quincy, M.E." (fiction). Wouldn't say I'm actually a fan though.
ReplyDelete#8 ~ Who doesn't love Lucy! She was a comedy genius.
Have a great weekend! Love xx
"Dr. G., Medical Examiner", was here in Orlando. My nephew used to be one of her technicians and helped her. He was on some of the shows, but never really had a speaking part...just a helper.
DeleteI'm a bit envious of those with close family ties to cousins. I only have first cousins once removed (or are they second cousins?) on my mom's side and with families so far flung these days, I never really had the chance to get to know any of them. On my dad's side I had two first cousins, male and several years older than me. I was sort of close to one growing up but he and his brother both have pretty much cut ties since my dad and their mom are gone. I was adopted and not blood. I guess that's what motivates them. I'm not heartbroken. They are both not the nicest people these days and so ultra liberal (and vocal about it) I don't enjoy being around them anyway. I hope you have fun at your neighbors' tomorrow! I'm with you on #9. Tim and I will take $20 or $30 to play with at the casino and we usually win enough to keep playing for a while, but no big jackpots and we never get out more.
ReplyDeleteI go back to the days of Dr. Casey and Dr. Kildare~. I enjoy the oldies these days. Simple fun.
ReplyDeleteI love my cousins, too, Terri, but they live in Massachusetts, so needless to say, we don't get to interact in person much. The last time my two girl cousins and their husbands visited us was in the spring of the last year my mom was alive (her sister's daughters). I'm so glad they took the time to visit their Aunt Nancy!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
This was kind of a blast from the past, fun reading! I do like medical shows.
ReplyDeleteI have a large family and love my cousins. We have a facebook page on my Dad and my moms side to try to keep connected.
Such a lovely photo of you at the end, smiles. I loved my cousins too, unfort...when I married out of my Faith, we all went our separate ways...its just unfortunate...trying to mend fences goes both ways, unfortunately, it's just a one way street.
ReplyDeleteLove this photo of you, Terri! I, too, am crazy for medical dramas -- going back to Dr. Kildare when I was crushing on him. Weren't transistor radios the greatest thing? I hadn't thought about those in years; the closest thing to that is our weather radio.
ReplyDeleteI love that happy photo of you at the end! Really pretty!! I can remember Dr. Kildare and Dr. Ben Casey. Seems like we used to watch some E.R. shows too, but now I find them too stressful. I was close to one cousin, "Becky", who lived nearby and we grew up together. Now she lives in Ohio. Most of my other cousins always lived too far away from us to be able to see more than once a year, if that. Although since Facebook, we have mostly all reconnected and stay in touch better than before. None are famous, but one of my uncles was in several movies, with background parts, mostly as a muscle man of some kind. He was very good looking. Hope you have a lovely day tomorrow, and that you did today as well.
ReplyDeleteOur family was so small that I still have one cousin, alive, somewhere in north Texas. We don't get along so there's that.
ReplyDeleteHappy Sunday!
hugs
Donna
Alvin and the Chipmunks -- I still enjoy them.
