An Elvis Saturday 9...

Thanks to Sam for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Just Because

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer questions, however, and here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: Just Because (1956)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this week's song, Elvis complains that his girl has confused him with Santa Claus. This time of year, Santa is prominent. Did you more recently hear Santa referred to in a song, see him in a holiday decoration or ad, watch him in a film or TV show, or maybe even met him in person, ringing a bell or asking kids if they have been naughty or nice? I have a small Santa collection and those figurines are the latest Santas I've seen.

2) Finally Elvis just can't take it anymore and breaks up with her, just because. Is there anyone in your life who has a way of pressing your buttons and getting on your nerves?  No. I try to not let other people press my buttons.  Life is too short.

3) "Just Because" is one of the last songs Elvis recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis. TripAdvisor recommends a Sun Studio tour as one of the top things to do in Memphis. Have you ever been to Memphis? If yes, what did you do?  I have never been to Memphis but would enjoy a visit someday.

4) Elvis left Sun for RCA, a much bigger record label. As part of the deal, RCA negotiated for the rights to all his unreleased Sun songs. "Just Because" is one of them, and it was included on Elvis' first RCA album. Have you gotten a good deal on anything lately?  I think the BOGOs at Publix are usually a pretty good deal and I take advantage of them whenever I am food shopping.

5) In 1956, when "Just Because" was released, non-stick cookware was first introduced. Do you have any Teflon in your kitchen right now?  I have several pieces of non-stick cookware, but I don't think they are actually "Teflon".  I have Blue Diamond and Circulon.

6) Elvis thought peacocks were beautiful and commissioned stained glass peacock panels for his living room. Do you have any stained glass in your home?  I love stained glass but don't have any in my home.

7) He tried to keep peacocks at Graceland. One of the birds saw its reflection in Elvis' gold Cadillac and started pecking, ruining the car's expensive paint job. Elvis donated the peacocks to the Memphis Zoo. Have you ever had a bird as a pet?  I have not had a bird as a pet but know folks who do and it is always fun to engage with them.  Birds are smart and quite interesting.

8) Elvis decorated the long Graceland driveway for the holidays with blue lights. His father teased that with the airport nearby, pilots might confuse their driveway with a runway. What airport is nearest to your home? Lakeland has an international airport but we (sadly) don't have any commercial passenger carriers yet.  Amazon has a hub there and those cargo jets fly in and out 6-8 times a day.  There are also private jets using it.  We have to go to Tampa to get a flight out.  It is about 35 miles away.

9) When Elvis was alive, he kept the holiday lights up until January 9, the day after his birthday. That tradition continues at Graceland today. Conventional etiquette tells us Christmas decorations should go up the day after Thanksgiving and come down before January 6 (the 12th day of Christmas). Do you think it's ever too early, or too late, for Christmas decorations?  I prefer waiting until after Thanksgiving to decorate and I usually take it all down right after New Year's Day.  Each to his or her own, though. I don't worry about what other people do (or think).

Helen update:  Helen was moved from the hospital to the nursing home/rehab facility yesterday.  I did not try to go see her after work because she wasn't arriving until 2:30 or so and then would have to get settled.  The staff didn't need me there but I did speak at length with a person in admissions and we were able to take care of the paperwork online.  I will see her later today.

Peace & hugs!
Love is all there is!!

  1. Continuing in prayer for Helen's recovery and rehab. Sure do pray she will regain some strength quickly, but this takes time. Praying for you as well...these things do take a lot of energy and concern. I am not familiar with the Elvis song. I liked Elvis, but was not a huge fan as I was a little young when he first got started. My sister was a bigger fan than I. But I enjoyed his music, especially his hymns. Take care my friend. Enjoy your weekend.

  5. Thanks for this update!
Tom used to make stained glass windows and cabinet doors but we sold everything a couple of years ago.
The only Teflon we have are lots (and lots) of spatulas. I'm so thankful you posted about Blue Diamond skillets; we've 3 so far.
    Have a great weekend! xo

  8. Danny and I did something this past week that we haven't done in ages - visit our local mall to see if we could find some additional gifts to send the grands for Christmas. Since it was a weekday, it was pretty deserted, but good ol' Santa was sitting on his magic throne, waving to anyone who was nearby. Of course, we waved back; it brought back so many great memories of seeing Santa myself and taking my kids to visit with him, too. I know it's sentimental, but I do love the concept of Santa Claus as he embodies the heart of giving.
Blessings, Terri, and thanks for the Helen update!
