Please don't feel obligated to read all of this!!
Helen is my dear friend. She and her husband, Alfred, were the first people we met when we visited Lakeland (33+ years ago) to see if we wanted to move here. Al was a CPA, like Joe. Joe had looked in his Virginia Society of CPAs directory for anyone who lived in central Florida. Al's name was there, with a Lakeland address, so Joe called him. He and Helen had moved from Virginia to Lakeland a few years before (1984, I think). Joe told him we were going to visit Lakeland and were thinking about moving there. Al didn't hesitate to invite us to meet them when we arrived. A few weeks later, we did just that.
He and Helen met us at the door of their home, invited us in, and had coffee and just-baked cookies waiting for us. We sat with them, enjoying the refreshments and the conversations for over two hours. The house next door to them was for sale and they told us to be sure and look at it because they would love to have us as neighbors. We just clicked and the friendships grew from there. (We did look at the house, but it wasn't what we wanted.)
We found a home we loved (two miles from them) and it wasn't quite three months before we lived in Lakeland (1989). Al and Helen didn't have children and ours were miles away so we started sharing holidays. Thanksgiving was usually at our house (sometimes kids were here too) and Christmas was usually at theirs (unless we had kids here and did Christmas at our house, too). Al was Catholic so we started picking him up for Mass on Saturday evenings and Helen, many Saturdays, had dinner ready when we brought him home. Helen was Methodist and was very involved in her church. Al would go to church with her on Sunday mornings and many times we joined them for Christmas cantatas or holiday potlucks. She volunteered in the church office doing the bulletins and was on a few other committees.
Fast forward to a very sad morning in 2013 when we received a call from Helen that she thought Al was dead. We jumped into our clothes and drove to their house, arriving before the EMTs got there. He was gone. He looked so peaceful like he just slipped away during the night. He was 85 and had some major health issues.
Helen asked Joe and me to be her power of attorney, health care surrogate, and to be her guardian if she ever needed us to take over for her. We visited the attorney with her and the paperwork was done. This was all a dozen years before it would be needed.
Helen's niece, Cheryl, lives here in Lakeland and she quickly moved in with Helen (at Helen's invitation). Helen was still driving then (in her early 80s) and Cheryl was working but we were happy Helen had company in the evenings and Helen was happy helping her niece with living expenses.
Fast forward again to when Helen had an accident and lost her license. Cheryl was her main transportation and that worked for a while until Helen started having health issues that became difficult for Cheryl to handle, especially while still working during the day.
Fast forward yet again... Joe died on February 16, 2021. A few weeks later, just after Joe's memorial service, Cheryl announced that she was moving in six days. I had to shift gears and, with a lot of help from my dear friends, Elaine and Jim, who were renting in Mas Verde during that time, helped me get arrangements made for Helen to move to an assisted living facility. It's the same one my grandmother had been in years earlier. We were blessed that they had room for her. Helen was able to help make the decisions about what to take (furniture, clothing, etc.) and was fine with moving. She understood that she couldn't live alone in her house.
Assisted living, during covid, was not a happy place. No communal dining, and no activities, and Helen was soon being moved to memory care. It was so hard seeing her deteriorate so quickly and we blame the covid quarantine and anxiety for that. (I was able to sell Helen's house last summer. She would never be able to go back there and the money is invested for her.)
That brings us almost two years later and about where we are today. We were so blessed to be able to have her with us for Christmas dinner last year and were hoping for the same this year. Sadly, it's not to be. We will all go visit her, though. As an update, I wasn't able to visit yesterday but spoke with her nurse, Hannah. and Helen is just sleeping all the time and is not very responsive. I hope they can get her to the rehab/nursing home soon where it will be much easier for me to visit and she will have more attention.
Thank you for sharing this story about your relationship with Helen and her hubby Al. I know Helen is definitely like family to you and you are to her the daughter she never had. I am praying for Helen to be moved to rehab soon and start getting stronger. Praying for you as well, as I know this is a great concern for you. (((hugs))) and prayers.
ReplyDeleteHi Terri: This is such a sweet a smart story, you both were lucky to have found each other and form such a beautiful friendship and actually become a close family.
ReplyDeleteThank-you for sharing with us, you have so many beautiful memories from sharing your life with Alfred and Helen.
It is sad that she is not getting up and sleeping so much, I hope they move her very soon to rehab.
I did read the whole story it is heartwarming.

God bless you, Terri, for all that you do for your dear friend. I love hearing about how you all met...strangers, yet they opened their home with coffee and cookies, just so sweet to hear. I'm praying for Helen, and for you too, that you don't grow weary in doing good...

Terri - - This is so beautiful. THANK YOU for sharing it! I did not know some of the details - - or they had not been prominent in my memories.
ReplyDeleteI so love how God directed your path from the time you decided to move to Florida - - HE gave Joe the right person to call - - which led to life-long friends who became closer than family in some ways. I did not realize you all were each other's "go-to" for holiday dinners. The worship transportation and enjoyment of special programs at church is beautiful.
The longevity of this close friendship is not common in today's world. I am so thankful you four had this beautiful relationship and am Praising God for the wonderful way you and Joe have cared for Helen. I know a lot has been put on your shoulders since you have been alone but you have handled it all so well. Thank you again for sharing the super wonderful years together that flew by ever so quickly.
Proof that being friends is just as important as being a blood relative. We choose them and they are very loved. You are a good friend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful story. I did not know it either. What an angel you are to Helen and so trustworthy. Why did her niece move? Hope they move her soon. I think you are wonderful - sometime friends are closer than families.
ReplyDeleteSandie, We had home care for Helen, 4 hours a day. But it is so expensive. Helen had some health issues that Cheryl couldn't handle. She had her own health issues and just decided she couldn't handle it anymore. Wish she gave us more than a week's notice, but it all worked out. She did what she had to do.
DeleteThank you for sharing the story of how you met Helen and her husband. I have always wondered that. What a treasure to have such great friends. Yall have certainly been there for one another and I think it is so precious and a testament to your friendship that you look after her so well and make sure she is cared for.
ReplyDeleteEven having come in on the latter part of your story, I read every word. What a treasure Al and Helen were to welcome you into their home and their hearts.
ReplyDeleteNow in turn, your concern and care for Helen is pretty awesome. I'm sure her (professional) caregivers don't see that very often.
Wouldn't Joe be so proud of his best girl?!
I really enjoyed reading this. I remember a lot of the last years. I remember you doing holidays together, I remember when Al passed and I remember the difficulty when Cheryl suddenly moved.
ReplyDeleteHelen has been a good friend and you have been wonderful to her. Looking back, you can certainly see how God placed you in Al and Helens life and what a blessing you have been.
I'm so grateful that you have shared this back story with all of us, Terri. It certainly made my empathy/sympathy meter escalate to new levels of understanding. As I've said before, I will keep praying for Helen, for you, and all those who are trying to help her through this most difficult stage of her beautiful life. May we all see the end of our days with such dedication and caring.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Thank you for writing this all out, Terri! It is so helpful to know how your relationship with Helen came to be and how it has evolved. I've been missing reading blogs, so I'm working my way back through yours to find out what has happened to her.
