Starting back on Friday, things were hectic at work (all week, really) getting ready for the Kids' Fishing Derby on Saturday morning. I stuffed 100 "goodie bags" with a coloring book, fishing information, bookmarks, fishing towels, a ruler to measure your fish, and fishing lures. We expected to register 100 kids and ended up with 118, including a few walk-ins. There were a few no-shows, probably because of the storms blowing around us. However, the weather was perfect and the storms didn't hit until a couple of hours after the event ended.
Counting parents, volunteers, and staff, we estimated around 240 people there on Saturday morning. It started at 8:00 a.m. and most of the staff were there at 6:00. I arrived around 6:30 and stayed until it ended at 1:00. It was a very fun morning. We fed everyone with hotdogs on the grill, a bag of chips, and a beverage (water or lemonade). One of the charter schools had their fishing team there to help with lunch. The Police Athletic League (PAL) brought 25 kids. The weather was great and when things quieted down (I was at the registration table, checking people in), I took a few photos and also visited...
Goodie bags were handed out as people left and most were happy with their "catch". Staff had stocked the lake with 3,000 channel catfish two days before the event and we also had automatic fish feeders dropping food that brings the fish to the surface. Trying to make it a fun experience for the kids and there were lots of smiling faces on the way out. We also had a casting contest that seemed to be fun. I didn't go to watch that. I am just glad it was a success for our staff who were so invested in making it so. My part was minuscule compared to the Fisheries Biologists who did all the leg-work and got it all organized.
I went to Sunday school and church yesterday and then headed south to Punta Gorda. I was meeting my grandkids and their mom for lunch at our favorite Captain's Table restaurant, in Fisherman's Wharf. I was heading into Ft. Meade when I got a text from my granddaughter, Lauren. This came through my car, synced with my phone. She texted that she woke up sick with a fever and a cold. Sure it is just a cold (that means not covid) but she couldn't go to the restaurant. If I wanted to reschedule, to please call her mom or Tristan. I pulled over and called Kathy. She was on her way to Lauren's condo with cold meds. and to check on her. I told Kathy we would just reschedule when everyone could be there. Kathy agreed. My main concern is to see Tristan before he moves to DC. His work is calling everyone to the office. Tris has been working from home for two years now. They think he will be moving by the end of April. Kathy assured me that I would see Tristan before he moves so the new date is TBD.
My trip to Punta Gorda is about 45 minutes longer than theirs, from Naples, so I was already on the road and they hadn't left yet. Ft. Meade is only 10 miles or so from Lakeland, so I wasn't too far from home. It all worked out fine. I had a quiet and lazy afternoon, after all, and was able to catch up on blogs that I couldn't get to Saturday.
My covid test on Monday was negative, as expected, so the colonoscopy this Friday is a go. Fun for me on Thursday (not). I already told the Mas Verde gang that I won't be eating out on Thursday evening. I have an eye doctor's appointment at 4:00 this afternoon. My eyes have changed again, quickly. I think my cataracts are getting worse. I will find out.
That's enough. Thanks for getting this far!

Terri: I am soooo jealous you were able to participate in this event, what an awarding day for all.
ReplyDeleteI would love to meet an alligator, fishing derbies are so much fun seeing the looks on young children's faces, the looks are so precious when they catch a fish.
Have a great week
Catherine
Love the picture of you with the alligator and good that its mouth was taped. Sorry about lunch and hope she is better by now. I do hope you get to see Tristan before he leaves. Have a happy new week. xoxo

What a great event on Saturday! Yes, so much work goes in to making it so, and I'm glad there were smiles as people left!
ReplyDeleteSorry your lunch plans did not work out on Sunday. But a relaxing day at home wasn't too bad after your big day on Saturday. I surely hope you'll be able to see Tristan before he leaves Florida.
I'm thinking the same thing about my cataracts. I definitely will schedule an eye appointment after I get near the end of my supply of contact lenses.
Wow.. some pictures....think I would pass on the alligator.. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a thrill to hold that gator! Nice to know, there are still lots of good folks who care to share their passion with today's youth.
ReplyDelete'Sorry to hear about your lunch plans. (At least it's postponed, not canceled.) These sound like exciting times for your Tristan!
Now that had to be so entertaining for the kids. They'll remember that always. That's very kind of whomever dreamed up the event and for you and other to help.
ReplyDeleteThe miniature horse is cute. I prefer the full-sized one. Steve and I used to ride as often as possible Way Back When. We rode along the Rio Grande in Texas once (with a guide) and many other interesting areas. I wish I could do that again.
Have a wonderful week!
Blessings. xx
What a wonderful activity for the kids and it sounded (and looked) very successful. Did the gator come from your work area or did they bring it in to share with the kids? Hope your week goes smoothly, Terri. Will be praying for a clean colonoscopy.
ReplyDeleteShe captured it that morning from a local lake but not one of ours. Thanks for the prayers!
DeleteGators, cataracts, and plans changed. You've had a very eventful couple of days. Holding that 'gator -- girl, not sure I could do that, even with the tape around its mouth!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day you had! I love the pictures of you with the gator and pony/horse, etc. It all looks like SO much fun! I can tell you are enjoying your job. I am so glad God provided just the right place for you! I am sorry you missed out on your visit with the grandkids. Hopefully your granddaughter will be feeling better soon and you can all get together soon. Praying all goes well for your colonoscopy Fri. I know the prep is the worst part. I have a Dr. appt. and an eye Dr. appt. this week also. The price we pay for getting older! LOL. But thankful to be healthy. Hope your week goes well. Loved this post.
ReplyDeleteIt's good for kids to see animals and understand them better. Gators are scary though. I don't think I'd want to be near one.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great event that was. I love the pics of you with the alligator and the pony. I can tell that a lot of people were blessed at this event.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear that Lauren was ill. Hope another date can be set up soon.
I'm due for a colonoscopy soon too.
Oh no about your eyes and ick on the colonoscopy, grin. I hope Lauren is feeling better now...and we had a real gullywasher here in Ocala. Wow did it ever come down, grin.
ReplyDeleteCataracts are no fun, Terri; I've had them removed from one of my eyes, and am very happy about it. The second eye? A contact suffices for now.
ReplyDeleteSorry your plans to meet up with family didn't pan out, but I hope you all can make plans for the future to be together. The older I get, the more I appreciate the presence of and communion with family. What greater gift could God have given us?
Blessings!
I had my fun test in September but they didn't require a Covid test prior to the procedure for which I'm grateful.Hope all goes well for you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day Saturday was! I love seeing you working and smiling and being more casual than we usually see you. It looks good on you! Sorry your lunch date didn't work out, but I'm glad you have the assurance of seeing Tristan soon. Have a great week, Terri!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun post and delightful photos. That is so cool you got to experience that event helping out with all that goes with it. Looks like a great time.
ReplyDeletePrayers all shall be well Friday
