Hodgepodge Wednesday!

Hodgepodge for Wednesday, January 8, 2014
Thank you, Joyce, for another fun MEME!

Join in the fun HERE!

Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English.  Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness (go here to read more about how the words were chosen).  Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2014-

selfie, twerk/twerking, hashtag, Twittersphere, Mr. Mom, T-bone, ____on steroids, the suffixes-ageddon, and -pocalypse added to anything and everything, from the world of politics the words-intellectually/morally bankrupt and Obamacare, and from the world of sports the words-adversity and fan base

1. Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?  I would love to see Obamacare banished from the face of the earth, and I'm not just referring to the word itself.  I can't think of another word that I would like to see banished. Some of those mentioned don't really bother me.

2. What one unfinished project nags at you begging to be completed in this new year? At work, it is updating the employee handbook. It is such a pain to sift through and research changes in the law, etc.  At home, it is closet cleaning, and add cupboards to that, too. Dreaded projects, all, that must be done in 2014.  The Handbook, because it is past due, and the closets because we will be painting the bedrooms soon and both of the guest room closets are full of mostly my junk.

3. When did you last have a bowl of soup? What kind? Homemade or from a can? What's your favorite soup?  I had a bowl of Hot & Sour soup when we had Chinese food last week.  I am pretty sure they make it fresh, and it is delicious.  I really like soup, but I think my all-time favorite is French Onion, with that yummy melted cheese over the bowl.

4. Snowed in, snowed under, snow job...which one most applies to your life in recent days, figuratively speaking.  Snowed under.  See #2.

5. What's the funniest movie you've ever seen, or at least one of the funniest?  Back in the day (LOL) I thought Animal House was hilarious, and must have seen it 6 times at the theater. I was young, so what can I say!  I am one of those sick people who loves slapstick comedy. My first reaction to someone falling down is to always laugh, so I'm sorry if I see you fall and you are hurt. I love the old Three Stooges, The Bowery Boys, and Laurel & Hardy.... slapstick just makes me laugh.

6.  In general, would you say you're clumsy?  I certainly have my clumsy moments, but for the most part, no, I am not clumsy.

7. Elvis Presley was born on Hodgepodge Day (January 8th) back in 1935.  Are you an Elvis fan?  What's your favorite Elvis tune? If that's too hard, which Elvis tune do you dislike the least?  Click here for a list of his songs.  I am not an Elvis fan, but I don't mind most of his music or his movies, however - I absolutely HATE his version of Blue Christmas. I can't listen to it - have to turn it off when it comes on the radio. I just can't stand it. Maybe if it was just him, without the back-up singers, it wouldn't be quite as bad. I don't mind hearing the song when others sing it.

8. Insert your own random thought here. I am so happy Downton Abbey is back with their season four!! I love that show!! January brings back quite a few of my favorites, though I must admit to becoming addicted to many of the shows offered on Acorn TV, which are British and Australian shows.  Most are so well done.  Do you watch any of the BBC shows and, if so,  what is your favorite? (For my friends who live in the UK, what show should I look for that you just love, and what is your favorite show that comes from the USA?)

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!! Peace, love & hugs!

    1. Linda, you just copy the questions and paste them into a blog (or into word so you can copy them out later). It's not difficult!! You can link up or not, too. She posts the questions on Tuesdays, so you have time to write your answers. I figured out how to schedule a blog to post on a different date and time, so I do it that way now. Used to do it in Word... You figured out Blogger before I did, so I know you could do this too!! :) Love & hugs!! Thanks for your comment!

  3. Acorn tv??? Have you ever watched "Doc Martin"? Hilarious! And, a friend of mine turned me on to "Cracker", which is an older British series that I watched on Netflix. Robbie Coltrane (who played Hagrid) stars in it. Very good!

  5. Y'know, I have never seen Downtown Abbey. And so many love it. I feel I'm missing out on it all.

As for Obamacare...there are so many, including me that want it banished...period!!

  8. You know I agree with you on Obamacare. I pray it will be abolished.
I don't watch British TV. I tried to watch Downton Abby one night but couldn't get interested. Bob likes the comedy shows (can't tell you the names) but I don't.
Hope you have a good day.

  10. Maybe you would enjoy Elvis singing Blue Christmas if you heard my brothers and me singing it with him. In our best Elvis voices. LOL I don't usually care for French onion soup BUT, I have a friend who makes it from scratch and it is delish! And now I want some. LOL

  11. I know Animal House has a 'raunchy' side, but in its day I also thought it was funny. My husband knows all the words. Don't judge him too harshly for that though : ) I love pretty much all the British programming. We don't watch a lot of TV. My daughter makes a wonderful French Onion soup...I've never made it myself from scratch, but its one of my favorite soups. Good luck with the Handbook!

  12. Ditto on Obamacare. What is amazing to me is the people it is just now affecting this year with the huge deductibles. That started in on us at least two or three years ago. Our doctor said it was because of O-(doesn't)Care.
Bless your heart on the projects. Seems like it is feast or famine with stuff sometimes. I felt that way in October - - - never did feel caught up on anything after they worked on windows, etc at the house for over a week. It took till Christmas to feel "normal".
Funny - not - thing about Elvis. There are still some people who have gotten their young children hooked on his music. And have you yet seen a good impersonator. Most of them are aging. I agree on the Blue Christmas. When I think of it, all my brain thinks of is the "who who who who who who" in the back-up singers.

  13. I used to enjoy Elvis's movies when I was little, but can't say I'm a big fan. I like most soups and in winter most usually have the hot and sour soup when I go to the Chinese.

I don't get many British programmes on my TV - American and Canadian series instead. I'm not sure if they 're still on British TV, but I love two: Mrs. Brown's Boys (one episode was about a bikini wax which was hilarious) and the other is The IT Crowd. I think this last one has finished though. Both are so funny!

  14. I loved Animal House too, back in the day! lol! I'm surprised at the number of people who don't really care for
Elvis. I also like Downton Abbey. I did a marathon watching of all the seasons last year. Good luck with your work project!

  15. Sadly, I haven't seen any episodes of Downtown Abbey but I think I should start. Maybe I can borrow the first season from the library and try to get started. It seems like many people love it and I think I would too.
    Happy New Year!

  16. Thanks for stopping by my blog, and for the email. Sorry you are not able to comment… not sure what's going on there. My husband and I started catching up on Downton Abbey last summer. I'm not sure we have watched all the episodes, but I did watch the new one this week. Hope you are having a great day!

  17. I don't use any of those words and don't really understand what they mean. I became addicted to Big Bang Theory last year when I had 6 months of leg/knee healing. I laugh until I cry and then am annoyed with myself because of the immorality of it all. Still they make me laugh instead of tut-tutting. I also love British comedy but not the class system stuff. I like the ones about everyday life in Britain, like Keeping Up Appearances
