It's Hodgepodge Wednesday Again!

Hodgepodge for Wednesday, June 12, 2013

1. What do you think makes a good dad?  My dad was amazing. He was the chief disciplinarian, and we respected him. There was never a question about his love for us. He participated, showed up at school events, and worked hard in a job he didn’t really like so he could provide for us. He could make us (4 kids) laugh, and he could make us cry.  A “talk” from dad was harder on us than a spanking would have been.  He died from cancer at age 63. We lost him much too soon.

2.  What's something you learned from your own father?  He taught me to drive; he taught me how to work in a garden; he taught me how to love by his (and mom’s) example; he taught me how to “stick to it”; he taught me how important family is, again by his example. I was blessed.

3. It's your birthday-what kind of cake will we be having?   Red velvet, with my mom’s special icing recipe (not cream cheese!) (posted under the recipe tab, here).  She made it for me every year.  Since my birthday is two weeks before Christmas, she always baked enough layers to have two cakes.  One for my birthday, and one for the freezer to get out for Christmas day.  Of course, she has been gone since 1995, so if I get one for my birthday now, it’s because I baked it myself!

4. When you're faced with a big decision are you more of a go with your gut type of person, or are you someone who reasons it all out, weighing the pros and cons?  I have learned to trust my gut and usually go with that, or at least make it number one on the list if there is time to reason it out a bit.  Times I’ve not trusted my instinct, I’ve been sorry, so I usually go with the gut.

5. June is National Dairy Month. What's your favorite dairy item? Most often purchased dairy item?   I am not a milk drinker anymore, but I do eat a lot of cheese.  There is always cheese in the fridge.

6. Explorer Jacques Cousteau was born on June 11, 1910....what's something you've recently discovered or something you'd like to explore?  Through Ancestry.com’s DNA testing, I discovered I am 10% Scandinavian.  I had  no idea about that, and  look forward to exploring the family history more to find those Scandinavian relatives!

7. Are you typical of your generation?  I think that I probably am. I am a “baby-boomer” and fall right smack in the middle; since I was born in 1951 (Boomers were born 1946-1964).  Some of the traits for boomers are:  work-centric, independent, goal-oriented, and competitive. I am also a first-born, and some of those same traits describe a first-born.

8. Insert your own random thought here.  I am happy to be on the last question because I need to get some work done!!  That was my first random thought!  LOL

  4. I enjoy reading your answers though I don't at the moment have a lot of time to participate. Number 6 would take me ages to answer. I'm constantly learning new, and sometimes wonderful, things.

  5. Onyx has to stay another day and night. Maybe tomorrow... more tests to dig a little deeper. Sigh.

  7. Very interesting stuff to learn about you! I found some similarities with me in that I don't drink milk anymore either but do love my cheese. It sits fine on my stomach but milk doesn't so much. Funny thing is I never really enjoyed the taste of milk but drank it cuz I knew I should.
Very interesting on the DNA testing. I didn't know they could determine ethnic background with it. It would be fascinating to do that.
The traits of Boomer & first born - - I have those, too - - but you seem more productive than me most days.
Poor kitty. Hope Onyx is better soon and it's not a horrible ailment.
