Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 601
1. Let's compare this May to last May. What's changed? What remains very much the same? Last May compares favorably to this May. Not much has changed for me. This weekend is Mayfaire by-the-Lake, hosted by the art museum where I worked for 20+ years. It is nice to visit as a spectator now. I am sad that rain is predicted for the weekend. The 175 artists who have been juried in pay a chunk of change to participate, and rain means fewer (or no) sales. Mayfaire is a fine art festival, not crafts. Fingers crossed that Lakeland will be spared the rain, even though we need it badly.
2. What's something you may do this month? I have already issued invitations, so I'm pretty sure I am hosting an ice cream social for my new neighbors. Sandy and Bob just moved in a couple of days ago, and I've invited our little neighborhood to pop in and say hello on Friday, the 16th. I met them earlier this week and like them already. We are so blessed with good neighbors.
3. Mother's Day is approaching (in the US of A)...in what way(s) are you like your mother? I've been told a couple of times that I remind someone of my mom. That is such a compliment, and I don't hold a candle to her. My mom was an angel on earth. I have more features from my dad for looks. Mom and I both sang alto; we both played trumpet in high school band; she liked to paint pictures (especially scenes with old barns); and she loved being on boat rides, even though she was afraid of water and couldn't swim. She made sure all four of us kids took swimming lessons. I was blessed with amazing parents.
4. Did you have a favorite book as a child? What was it, and why was it a favorite? I loved to read and always got my gold stars for "Reading Circle" in the elementary grades. My favorite book in first grade was "Mary Poppins". I had Golden Books, and Mary Poppins was a favorite. I've written about this before, but in first grade, Miss Gibson asked us all to draw a picture of our favorite storybook character. I did Mary Poppins, with her arm raised, holding her umbrella. My teacher didn't know about Mary Poppins and made me stay in at recess to draw Snow White instead.
I cried at home, and Mom let me take the book to school to show Miss Gibson. I don't remember what happened when I did that, but Snow White stayed on the wall, and Mary Poppins was thrown away. Miss Gibson was not a nice teacher. Mrs. Everhart, in second grade, was terrific, though!
5. Are you more of a tortoise or a hare? Explain. These days, probably a tortoise. When I was younger, I was always rushing to get things done, to get where I was going... I was always steps ahead of anyone I was walking with. Slow down was heard often. Now those echoes make me chuckle. I don't hurry these days, but like the tortoise, slow and steady often times wins the race.
6. Insert your own random thought here. Interesting... Mary Poppins was written in 1934. I was in first grade in 1958/59 (I was 7 instead of 6) because of my December birthday. If you want more Mary Poppins info, click HERE!

Peace and Hugs!
Isaiah 44:3 – “For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.”
I cannot believe a 1st grade teacher would be so cruel to one of her pupils! She was obviously ignorant and probably an old maid! LOL. That just blows my mind! Although I must admit, I'd never heard of Mary Poppins until the movie came out with Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews! You were much more well read than I was in first grade! I just remember the Dick and Jane books in school. LOL. Oh, how nice you have some nice new neighbors, and an ice cream social is such a nice idea to introduce them to the neighborhood! You are the best hostess!! You make me wish I lived in your neighborhood! I bet know one knocks over mailboxes there! LOL. Have a lovely day! "Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in a most delightful way!"
ReplyDeleteShe was an old maid and my mom told me years later, when we talked about it, that she was caring for her sick mother and had a pretty miserable life during that time. I am sorry for her, but she still should have trusted that I knew who my favorite character was and not thrown it away.
DeleteI loved to read, too, from an early age I always had a book to stick my nose in!
ReplyDeleteAren't you glad sometimes that things stay the same - that means peace to me. LOL Nice of you to have the new neighbors over.
ReplyDeleteYour mom being and angel and great parents - awesome too.
I loved Mary Poppins - are you saying your teacher hadn't heard of her? Funny. I like to read too!
I can't believe your first grade teacher hadn't heard about Mary Poppins, and was so mean to you, Terri! My favorite book as a child was Charlotte's Web. And I have nothing but fond memories of my 1st grade teacher, Mrs. Ragsdale. Teachers like her can be few and far between, sadly. Have a blessed week!
ReplyDeleteI had to smile when reading the closing verse you posted, Isaiah 44:3. Like you, our area really needs the rain, and yet there is a tendency for really fun things to get scheduled at the same time as wet weather! How does that happen???
ReplyDeleteI feel like your teacher should have known about Mary Poppins. Teachers who treat students harshly are sadly always remembered. So are the really kind ones too though. My first grade teacher was my favorite. I wanted to go home with her lol. Your ice cream social sounds like a fun way for the neighbors to get acquainted. Hoping the rain holds off. We're supposed to have a rainy weekend here too.
ReplyDeleteOh that teacher was awful! Children never forget things like that. I am so sorry and she should have been informed. I remember Dr. Dobson from Focus on the Family had a similar experience in first grade. But he started drawing without all the direction and the teacher berated him. He said it stuck with him and he was unable to show any artistic talent. Awful teachers! Makes me sad! My first grade teacher, a nun needed a paper punch. I took my sisters and gave it to her. To this very day I still hear how that nun stole her paper punch from my sis! Argh.....I enjoyed your post otherwise and hope you are having a great week.
ReplyDeleteI hope the rain stays away from Mayfaire by-the-Lake and it is a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteThe ice cream social sounds like a lovely event! How kind of you to host!
Aww! That is so so sad that your teacher didn't know about Mary Poppins! I had no idea that Mary Poppins was a book series. It is one of the first movies that I can remember watching and loving.
Well, pooh(!!!) on your first-grade teacher! I'll bet you dislike Snow White to this day? (lol) I can't remember loving any children's book(s) in particular but like you, reading and collecting gold stars was my passion.
ReplyDeletePraying your rainy skies go elsewhere this weekend.
I really hope the rain misses Lakeland this weekend!
ReplyDeleteI am so sad to think of your teacher throwing you picture of Mary Poppins in the trash. I can't understand that she didn't know of Mary Poppins, and then upon seeing the book still didn't let you have that picture up on the wall. But I have a horrible first grade memory too. I went to a Christian school and we had devotions each morning. One time our lesson was about lying. This stern little woman stood there in front of us and said in her sternest voice and face possible, "Liars go to HELL." I'll never forget the feeling of fear I had as I was pretty sure I had lied a time or two.
Your mom sounds absolutely amazing!!
She was, indeed.
DeleteLove Mary Poppins. What an awful teacher you had. Hope the rain holds off at the weekend for you.
