A New Year's Eve Tuesday 4...

Thanks to Annie for today's Tuesday 4!!  You can join in HERE!

New Year's Eve

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and the eve of 2025. Growing up New Year's Eve was one of my favorite times of the year.   Everyone would come to our home for snacks and drinks before heading out to parties.  And I do mean nearly everyone we knew.

All dressed up in formal clothing they would join in the fun.  My father would play ragtime on the piano, our German friends played German music and everyone would dance to it.

My mother made hors d'oeuvres on tiny bread rounds and crackers... bayberry candles burned down for luck. Guy Lombardo was on the TV in the background.

1. What memories of New Year's Eve do you have?  Guy Lombardo was on TV and we made fun of the "old" couples dressed up and dancing.  My dad's brother and his wife and kids often came for NYE.  The folks were in the kitchen playing cards and talking.  My cousin and siblings usually played Monopoly in front of the TV in the living room.

2. Do you go to bed early or stay up until midnight to ring in the new year?  I usually stay up for the ball to drop but I don't enjoy the 'entertainment' they feed us these days so I watch something else until it's about time for the countdown.  Then it's off to bed.

3. Do you have special foods or customs for the New Year?  Here in the south, it's black-eyed peas, collard greens, pork, and cornbread. I don't have company coming so will leave the customary food to others.  We are having a pot-luck at church on the 12th and there will be ham and Hoppin-Jack (rice & black-eyed peas), cornbread, and greens.

4. Will football and New Year parades be on your agenda for New Year's Day?  I will put the Rose Parade on and may actually get to watch it since I won't be in the kitchen preparing for company.  I enjoy the Rose Parade.  Football - I might peek in on a game if it's a team that will interest me.   I have no idea what teams are playing.

Peace and Hugs!

Should old acquaintance be forgot
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot
In the days of auld lang syne?

    2. It was on the news this morning. They are tailgating already in Tamps. Those of us who are Buckeye fans don't like the Wolverines!

  4. Yikes, I forgot to get collards yesterday! Oh well, Tom won't eat them anyway and I only heat a 'tidge of black-eyed peas for luck.
I, too, don't 'get' what the network's call (New Year's Eve) entertainment. Nope, note offended in the least to be outside their target demographic, lol.
Wishing you a blessed New Year!

  8. I am right there with you on the entertainment. I do the same thing and turn over when it is time for the ball to drop. I am in Missouri, so the ball drops at 11:00pm my time, so I wait around another hour. Loved your answers! Have a Happy New Year 2025!

  10. UGA is in the Sugar Bowl playing Notre Dame. But since it doesn't even start until 8:45 EST, there is no way I can stay up for all of it. I'll have to catch the highlights the next morning. Happy New Year, Terri!

  11. It is actually sunny and pleasant in Auburn today so I have been trying to get some outside time which will definitely have me sleeping long before midnight. Happy New Year's Eve.

  12. Since moving to the South in 2017, I have had collard greens many times (cooked by others) and I really enjoy that. My mother used to cook black eyed peas for New Year's Day, but in recent years I've concluded that did NOTHING to ensure the New Year would be especially good. I enjoy them, but since the people I would be cooking for generally did not care for BE peas, I just stopped with that tradition.

    Happy New Year, dear Terri!

  13. What is the difference between hoppin John and hoppin Jack?? We will have ham and black eye peas and greens and cornbread tomorrow -- it will just be the two of us. Your childhood New Year's Eve memories sound wonderful. I can't believe 2025 will be here tomorrow.

    1. Jack and John are interchangeable I think. Probably depends on what state you live in. Still not a favorite. LOL

  14. I read all the comments above. Am I the only Pennsylvania Dutch blogger who ALWAYS makes pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes for New Years Day?

And about football - tomorrow Penn State will play Boise State in Arizona. I live in State College so of course am rooting for Penn State. My sister Barb lives in Idaho and will be rooting for Boise State. Her daughter and husband live in Arizona and will be AT THE GAME!! We might be having a bit of family competition tomorrow, haha!

    1. I have been in Florida since 1989. In Ohio, we always had pork and sauerkraut - which I much prefer!!
