Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)
Saturday 9: Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You) 1969
Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.
1) In this song, Liza Minnelli acknowledges that she may be "taking a terrible chance." Have you done anything risky lately? Not that I can think of in this moment.
2) In 1969, when Liza recorded this song, she was 23 and her career was really beginning to take off. She was a sought-after guest on TV talk and variety shows and received her first Oscar nomination. Give us a quick overview of your life at 23. Married for four years and my husband (back then) had finished college on the GI Bill and started working full-time as an IRS Agent. We lived in Huron, Ohio, and worked in Sandusky, Ohio (on Lake Erie). I did accounts payable for a small, family-owned, wholesale plumbing and electrical supplier. This was the first house we purchased, on the left, and Lake Erie at the end of our street. It was COLD in the winter!! He got promoted and we moved to the Washington DC area in 1977.
3) Also in 1969, the first Gap store was opened in San Francisco. What have you recently added to your wardrobe? If yes, where did you buy it? I found two Kim Rogers t-shirt tops at Belk, and they were on sale for $11.99 each.
4) Liza says she always has apple juice in her refrigerator. What's something you're certain to have in your frig? Eggs, cheese, milk, butter...
5) Liza's favorite card game is poker. What's yours? I'm not an avid game player, but I enjoy Hand & Foot, Eucher, and the Aggravation game played with two decks of cards and a marble chase-around board.
6) Though Liza recorded the song in 1969, "Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)" was written way back in 1931. It has been recorded more than 50 times by artists as diverse as Bing Crosby, Andy Gibb and Bob Dylan. Before today, had you heard it? I have heard it before. I listen to the Sirius 40s station and the Sinatra station often. I don't think I've ever heard Liza's version.
7) "Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)" is credited to Bert Kalmer and his partner, Harry Ruby. Another one of their hits was "Who's Sorry Now?" Do you owe anyone an apology? Not that I can think of. If I do, I'm sorry!!
8) Together they also wrote "Hooray for Captain Spaulding," sung onscreen by Groucho Marx in the movie Animal Crackers. There were five Marx Brothers in all. How many can you name? Groucho, Chico, and Harpo. I had to look up Zeppo and Gummo.
9) Random question: Do you believe talking to plants helps them grow? I kill plants before they are ever big enough to have a conversation with me. Haha! I have heard that music is good for them, so a soft voice might also help them stay happy and grow.
Peace and Hugs!
The harvest can either be flowers or weeds.” — William Wordsworth

I enjoyed your life history. You've lived in a lot of places.
ReplyDeleteI'm also a plant killer!
1) It sounds like you’re keeping things steady for now, with no big risks on your plate.
ReplyDelete2) Your life at 23 sounds like it was a busy and fulfilling time, with significant milestones like buying your first house and moving to a new area for a promotion. It must have been quite a transition from the cold winters by Lake Erie to the Washington DC area. Thanks for sharing your experience!

My 23rd year wasn't particularly pleasant, but I enjoyed learning more about yours.
ReplyDeleteI really should apologize to any plant that happens into my house! Gosh, it's been decades since I played cards. Right now, I'm caught up with the NYT games on my phone/tablet.
We don't listen to music as much as we should, but I think our playlists complement each other. Good stuff!
I love the quote from Wordsworth you included here, Terri - so true! Have to say, I never cared for Liza Minneli.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Washington, DC! Bet you're especially thankful to not live there now.
ReplyDeleteI don't have inside plants anymore. I tend to harm them too. I'll stick with the outside ones.
Have a wonderful evening. 💙
I lived in the metro DC area for 12 years before exiting to Florida in 1989.
DeleteI saw Liza back in the 70s at Allentown State Fair in PA.. She was walking along the rides... no makeup on and still remember how different she looked... actually a lot of acne scars... I don't know why I am telling you all this...but as a teenager it gave me hope with my acne I guess. LOL. :)
ReplyDeleteWe have a real tree in our office, and I can tell you "Rodriguez" likes to be talked to, just saying LOL. Hope you have a beautiful Sunday my friend.
ReplyDeleteWell, I wouldn't like the winters, but for the rest of the year I would LOVE to live that close to Lake Erie! I enjoyed reading your answers today, Terri. Have a blessed Sunday! (Sorry to be so late getting around. We had Leah's birthday party today.)
ReplyDeleteYou've lived where it was COLD and now live where it is HOT! I think I would prefer hot. Which do you prefer?
