Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for this week's questions!  You can find her

Little Things

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. Now on to this week's questions.

Little Things (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Bobby Goldsboro celebrates the "little things" that delight him, like seeing his girl smile. What are some little everyday things that reliably lighten your mood?  Hearing from loved ones; Joe's smile; when one of the cats wants to snuggle; a wave from a neighbor!

2) Bobby is a lifelong sports fan. While in high school, he came to terms with physical limitations -- slender build, slow speed -- that would prevent him from having a career as a professional athlete. That's when he turned his attention to music. Given your choice, would you rather make your living in music or sports?  If it is between those two, music for sure.  I was athletic in school (somewhat - ran track, girls basketball, ice skating, etc.) but am a couch potato now!  Explain your decision.  I used to play the trumpet, I have had piano and organ lessons (but can't really play either) and loved to sing. Of course, it is all moot because I am old and already retired and haven't played a keyboard or my trumpet in years and years and can't sing at all anymore.

3) Shortly before "Little Things" was released, Bobby toured England for two weeks, backing up Roy Orbison. They opened for The Beatles. Bobby fondly recalls spending time with Paul McCartney, teaching him how to imitate the croak of an Alabama tree frog. Are you good at imitations (human or otherwise)?  No. Not at all.  Well, my BFF Elaine and I used to have a club and our secret password was to whistle like the Bobwhite...

4) Back in the States, Goldsboro (again with Orbison) opened for the Rolling Stones in New York. Which band did you listen to more recently, the Stones or the Beatles?  Neither, actually, though I prefer the Stones over the Beatles. Never been a real Beatles fan.

5) Bobby worked on projects with Burt Reynolds, doing the music for the movie Gator and the TV show Evening Shade. Burt said it was not only Bobby's musical ability but also his wit that made him fun to work with. What qualities do you value in a coworker?  Trustworthy, high integrity, and reliability.

6) These days, Bobby spends more time painting than performing music. He regularly donates his artwork to be auctioned off for charity. Have you ever tried your hand at painting?  Yes, I have.

7) In 1964, when this song was on the radio, women spent more on styling gels and sprays than they do today. Are you having a good hair day? No worse than any other day!  Or has the pandemic made dealing with your hair something of an adventure? My hair is short and naturally curly. It is pretty easy to manage, even when it could use a trim.  (Actually, I have a friend here in our community who is a retired hairdresser and I have been twice to him for a trim!  We were careful.)

8) Nationally and internationally, one of 1964's biggest news stories was the marriage of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The bride wore a yellow dress and white and yellow flowers in her hair. The groom was decked out in a sedate dark suit with a red tie and a yellow boutonniere. What did you wear the last time you got really dressed up?  The Museum's Gala, April 2017.

 9) Random question: Imagine you're stranded on a desert island with a complete stranger. Would you prefer your one and only companion to be a man or a woman?  I don't want to be stranded on a desert island at all but probably a woman if she is somewhat self-sufficient and not a whiner.  The same could be said for a man, though. Just give me a person who can pull his/her own weight to help us survive!

Happy Saturday and thanks for your visit!

Peace & hugs!  God bless!!

  1. Wow, so much to think about here. I'll start at the end. I would prefer to be stranded on a desert island with a man, as long as he was honest, kind, and able to protect and defend our lives, and was creative enough to provide shelter, food, etc., and was a gentleman. LOL. I've read some good old fashioned romance stories about this exact scenario, and thankfully they all turned out good. (and they fell in love and lived happily ever after once they were rescued!). My hair currently has a perm that is rapidly growing out and losing all curl. By the time we can go to a salon again I will probably need a new perm. I just got this one right before my surgery so it would be easy to take care of. It did help. I liked the Beatles when they first came out and were still kind of young and innocent. But then they changed their style when they started messing around with drugs, etc., and I didn't like them so much. I did like the Rolling Stones' music, but never really liked the musicians as much as I did the Beatles. I love the Bob White call. We sure don't ever see or hear them anymore, even when we lived in the woods. They say the coyotes and bobcats and feral cats have pretty well wiped them out, since they are ground birds. So sad. Last time I really dressed up was for our son's wedding in 2017. And even that was very semi-formal. We live in a very casual society. Well, I guess I told you everything about me here. I loved your answers...this was a fun way to start the morning!! Have a blessed day all day long.

  3. Love that photo of you and Joe, Terri - elegant! And as for my hair, oh, yuck! I could sure use some highlights and a trim, but that isn't going to happen any time soon.
I had forgotten all about Bobby Goldsboro until he was featured here. I remember loving to hear him sing.
    Blessings!

  5. I had not thought about Bobby Goldsboro in a long time. I do remember he sang a very sad song that played on the radio a lot when I was a teenager. Glad you have been able to get a trim as I am waiting until May 19th for my appt with my hair dresser. I have trimmed my bangs a bit but I can always brush them back if I mess up.lol

  6. I think I need my husband to be with me on this island. He knows how to do things and is strong. See, questions like that just make me want to stay home. I would never make it on an island. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  8. As soon as you wrote, "Bob White" I heard my daddy's voice. My goodness, how he'd enjoy mimicking, "Bob WHITE"! I always enjoy(ed) seeing these formal pictures of you and Joe. While I'm all about being comfortable, I miss there being little-to-no occasions to fancy-up.

  9. I haven't seen a Bob-White in the wild in years...and it's our state bird! I'd never have made it in your club. I can't whistle worth a darn. Don't you and Joe look dashing!

  10. How clever of you and BFF Elaine to have your own whistle! I love it!

  11. I'm not good at imitations or painting!
I like the questions about the little things. I think the little things that make us happy are more important than the big things. They bring us little bits of joy throughout each day.
