The Wednesday Medley...

1.  Wednesday, December 19, 2018, is National Hard Candy Day! So the first question today is to ask if you enjoy hard candy, especially the kind we usually see during this festive time of year?  I am not a huge fan of hard candies but my dad LOVED the Christmas ribbon candy so I am partial to that memory.  What is your favorite?  I like Werther's butterscotch candies.  Which hard candy brings up the best memories for you if any?  The Christmas ribbon candy, for sure, but my dad also loved horehound candy.  He was like a kid in a candy store when he got a bag of horehound.  It is not a taste I have ever acquired, but it makes me smile when I see it somewhere for sale.  Perhaps it was his favorite because none of us kids liked it and he could have it all to himself!

2.  Holiday shopping!  Are you finished?  Not quite... I still have baking to do.  If you could spend an entire day in just one store, which one would it be and why?  I started to say Hobby Lobby, but if I have to spend the entire day it had better be Target where I can get some food and drink! LOL  Ours has a Starbucks inside.

3.  What holiday dessert describes you and why?  Well, I don't know that red velvet cake 'describes' me, but it is my favorite holiday dessert because my mom used to make one for my birthday (December 11) and would freeze extra layers to have two weeks later on Christmas day.  I still like to make it for Christmas.  The icing she used (and I use) is the key to making this dessert really special.  The recipe is under my recipe tab above if you want to know how to make it.  I double the recipe so there is LOTS of icing.  Buttery goodness!

4.  What is your least favorite holiday side dish?  I don't care for oysters and that includes oyster dressing. No thank you.

5.  Now be real!! There is one on almost every tree. What is the ugliest tree ornament you have ever seen?  My apologies to anyone who makes these or has made these (including my mom!!) but years ago a patron of the art museum where I worked made ornaments like this and wanted us to sell them in our gift shop for $50.00 each as a fundraiser.  Quite a few of them sold for that much (because of who made them), but we were left with a bunch of them that no one wanted.  They really were over-the-top ugly.  This photo is from the internet and not one that the patron made... but looks just like his.

6.  Tell us something random about your week!!  Joe and I had our doctor appointments yesterday.  My reports were good and she made no changes to medications.  Joe is anemic and I am a little concerned about it.  She put him on iron pills and had us go down to the lab for another work-up for him.  He has had to take iron pills before so this isn't a new thing but may explain why he has been so tired lately.  She will call us if she changes anything for him. Offer a prayer for him if you will.  Thanks!

Thanks for your visit!!  If you are playing along, please leave your link below so we can all visit each other!   Peace & hugs!!  God bless!!

  1. I've never heard of that kind of candy that was your dad's favorite. My dad's favorite was chocolate covered cherries and I loved them, too. Red Velvet has always been one of my favorite cakes to bake and I always made one for my best friend's birthday for many years. I can't even think about oysters without gagging. That ornament is made from old jewelry? I pray that the iron pills will get Joe's red blood cells up and no more anemia. I'm anemic also so I know what it's like to feel so tired all the time.

  2. That red velvet cake looks devine! And extra icing??? YES, PLEASE!!!
That is one ugly ornament, for sure. I think you can still get that hard candy at Cracker Barrel. Good choice on the store...thinking about needing to eat made me giggle! :)
    Prayers for Joe.

  3. Oh yes! Red Velvet Cake. When I go to visit my friend in Florida who is so ill, I plan to bring her a Red Velvet Cake. Her favorite. And mine too!

  4. Ugly Christmas ornaments -- an acquaintance gave us one a few years ago that I finally donated because it displeased me so much. This person will probably never see any of my Christmas trees in person, so I think I'm okay in disposing of it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  5. That red velvet looks delicious! My youngest daughter loves red velvet and I try to make it for her on her birthday. I will have to try your recipe next year. Merry Christmas to you and your family Terri! So happy to know you through our blogs! Maybe one of these days irl : )

  6. Before I even finished the candy question, my dad's favorite- the same as yours- flashed before me. I hadn't thought about it in years. I never really acquired a taste. Thats why I like to visit! Always makes me think about things.

  7. I havent had a piece of red velvet in years but your picture looks so yummy. I remember horehound candy and your mention of it made me smile. Praying for Joe that all will go well with taking the iron etc.

  9. I never heard of horehound candy.
    That cake looks so yummy.

Growing up my parents had a set of hideous birds that went on the tree every year along with a chirper that was supposed to sound like real birds but didn't. My mom bought me a bird ornament just like theirs as a joke and we put it on our tree every year. Only one bird and no chirper, lol
    Have a nice day!

  10. Horehound candy is the best! Slightly medicinal. I buy it from the Amish farm where I get sorghum (great on pancakes and oatmeal instead of molasses or maple syrup).

  11. Hooray for (mostly) good doctor's reports! I have some ornaments like your "uglies" that my aunt made years ago. Even though they are carefully wrapped I always end up putting some of the beads and sequins back on every time I use them. I remember when making them was a big thing. My aunt even made a whole bowl of beaded fruit! I enjoyed your questions and answers...thanks for hosting!

  12. Glad your doctor reports were good, Terri. I pray that Joe's anemia will soon be a thing of the past. That bag of candy reminded me of Mr. C's Grandpa who always had a bag of those pink Wintergreen lozenges. I think that my grandpa liked horehound can candy. Fun memories. Thanks for the Hodgepodge, Terri. Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday.

  13. But aren't those ornaments pretty when the lights on the tree are turned on causing them to sparkle? I've never seen one on a tree but I would think that would be the case. I don't like oysters either so I never cook with them. We do host oyster roasts from time-to-time but I always have loads of other food for those of us who don't partake. So glad your doctor reports were good. I'll say a little extra prayer for Joe. Thanks so much for hosting the Medley! Merry Christmas!

  15. Ooooh, that ornament is rather off-putting. Imagining the discomfort, the obligation y'all must have felt! I'd totally forgotten horehound drops! My dad and I loved them, as well. I'll have to see if Cracker Barrel doesn't carry them. So happy your lab results were great; and yes, I'm praying the iron supplements help Joe feel better!

  19. Hi Terri...no time to join the Medley this week but I will make time for a comment or two. My dad LOVED horehound candy! And my mom used to get the ribbon candy and that other "hard tack" candy as she used to call it. I really didn't care for it much! It sounds like a fun medley and wish I could have joined but too much going on. Have a wonderful Christmas and I will try to get in on the next one!

  20. Yes, that is a horrendous ornament, Terri! But your red velvet cake looks scrumptious! I usually prefer pies for desserts during the holidays, especially cherry.
And I will say extra prayers for Joe!

  21. That dessert looks good! So pretty too how it is layered.
I have seen ornaments like that but don't have one.
    Merry Christmas!

  22. Hi Terri. I just realized that I titled my post, 'Twas the Hodgepodge Before Christmas.' LOL I guess old habits die hard! I'll get my brain back in gear next time, I hope. :-) Have a wonderful evening. xo

  24. Hubby's grandmother loved horehound candy. Tastes like medicine to me. John's mother loved hard candy, and we always gave her some for Christmas, and she usually gave us all a box of it too. I'll be praying for Joe. Hope they can fix the anemia issue with no major problems. Thank you for doing this each week. I haven't linked up, but I enjoy reading everyone's answers. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Let us know if you make any trips up this way again!

  25. No hard candy for me either. I never heard of horehound candy!
    The cake looks sooo good!
I hope the iron helps Joe's blood level. Having a low hemoglobin can make a person very tired. I'll be praying for him.

  26. Hi Terri,
    Yes, I will be praying.
    Goodness that cake looks amazing!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!
    Love, Carla

  27. Yes!! That icing recipe is almost identical to the one I make, except mine uses granulated sugar instead of powdered. It is so yummy and not so sickeningly sweet. I must say I have never been crazy over red velvet cake. I made it one time many, many years ago, and when I realized how much red food coloring it called for I just lost my appetite for it, I guess!

I pray Joe will soon be feeling more energetic!
