Weekend Recap on Monday...

Monday, Monday...

I'll jump back to Friday.  Al and Theresa asked us on Thursday evening to go to breakfast with them on Friday morning. They were both on vacation last week and we were going to take a day trip with them one day while they were off but that didn't work out because of Joe's procedure and subsequent asthma flare-up (better but still coughing).  They are both early risers so we compromised with them on the time and they picked us up at 8:30. LOL

They had seen a little restaurant, in one of the (many) strip shopping centers, called Bedrock.  The restaurant used to be on the main artery through town, Florida Avenue, but they closed there and moved to a more remote, smaller location.

Well, none of us were very impressed.  Maybe lunches are better.  We all had cold food on our plates, the coffee (even a fresh pot) was terrible and my omelet was the worst one I have ever had, ever.  We won't be going there again.  The waitress proudly told us they offer the cheapest breakfast in town. People, you get what you pay for. Period.  I always say it is hard to mess up breakfast... they work really hard at Bedrock.  Made me kinda sad, actually.

Friday, early afternoon, I made a trip to our local hospital (Lakeland Regional Health - LRH) to see my friend Shirley.  Shirley had surgery on Thursday morning.  They took out her gallbladder and part of her colon. They found cancer during her colonoscopy.  I couldn't believe she was up in the chair and had already walked down the hall a couple of times on Friday morning. Shirley is 81 years young. Her husband, Don, was there too. I stayed about an hour talking and laughing. I took her a goodie bag full of boredom busters that she seemed to appreciate.  Our mutual friend, Cindee, had sent her flowers. They are very pretty and were still looking great on Sunday when I went for another visit.  Shirley got a soft diet yesterday and may get to go home today.  Chemo and radiation are still a possibility, but we have to wait on pathology for that news.

Saturday morning, Joe was feeling terrible from the constant coughing. Neither one of us got much sleep so we headed out for Urgent Care.  The nurse practitioner agreed that it was asthma, probably brought on by stress.  They gave him a breathing treatment and a prescription for prednisone.  Joe calls it 'Dr. Feelgood' medicine.  It has been years since he had an asthma attack and it brought back memories we were happy to have forgotten.  The prednisone usually gets him under control again so fingers crossed.

Our Canadian neighbors, Jill and Murray, popped over for a quick visit before leaving for Ontario in the wee hours of Sunday morning.  They gave us a key to their house in case something happens and we need to go in.  They are gone during hurricane season. Hoping we don't need the key, but happy to help if we are needed.

Al and Theresa popped in later and brought me a gift.  They went to a big cat rescue park over in Tampa and wanted to tell us about it.  They know I love all cats, including the big ones.  They got this pillow for me.  I LOVE it!!

Sunday morning I made us a big breakfast and then headed out to the hospital to visit with Shirley again. Hoping she will go home today (Monday)  Other than that, it was relatively quiet (except for the coughing).  I did two loads of laundry.  One of the cats (Lily, I think) threw up on one of the twin beds in guestroom #2 so the comforter and dust cover had to be washed. I did both beds. Those of you who have pets know how it goes...

Speaking of cats... cat hair is my glitter and I am usually covered in glitter!!

Today I am off to the ladies' coffee at the clubhouse.  Two of my former coworkers, Diana and Ellen, are coming to tell the women about the Museum and talk about summer art camp and scholarship opportunities.  Hoping there will be a nice attendance. Unfortunately, lots of our winter residents have already gone home. They will need to come back in January, I think.

Oh, our surgical consultation for Joe's heart valve procedure is April 18th. We also see the cardiologist that day and the pulmonary tech for a breathing test. Hoping the asthma problem has resolved itself before the 18th so Joe has a chance of passing the test. Hoping we will have some answers and a surgery date that day or shortly after.

The April Challenge:

#8  Your thoughts on ageism?

First, I had to look up the meaning of ageism.  (Prejudice or discrimination on the basis of a person's age.)

Good grief, what a question!  Personally, I don't think I have any prejudice based on age.  I do have a certain disdain for stupidity and ignorance, no matter the age.  Call that prejudice if you want.

So how was your weekend?  Thanks for your visit!  Peace & hugs!

  3. I know you will stay on top of it - - but if the coughing persists - - head back to the doctor. I am NOT wishing anything more on Joe but that is how my pneumonia started last month. I was at the doctor on a Wednesday due to an extremely persistent cough. They gave me a steroid shot. The coughing continued and ended up being pneumonia by Monday.
I had been exposed to a couple of viruses and allergens so thought mine was asthma, too. Joe is in a rough place right now with the heart needing some work because that doesn't help his breathing either.
I will definitely be praying for him. That coughing makes your throat sore as well as the stomach and ribs!

  6. Sorry the restaurant was such a disappointment....doubt they have much business. Coughing and Asthma is just miserable; sure hope he gets better soon. The pillow is so cute and I can certainly relate to the 'glitter' of our kitties! Hope today is a good one for both of you.

  9. Ageism? That's a new word for me! Just goes to show you learn something new everyday. Hope your friend Shirley continues to have a good recovery and keeping Joe in my prayers.

  10. Sorry to hear Joe is struggling. I hope the medication helps. You will be glad when the 18th rolls around and you know what you will both be facing. Ageism is a well known thing here in the UK - job application forms are not supposed to ask for age so that people don't get discriminated against. Nice idea but you only have to have a quick scan of a resume to get a feel for how old the applicant is! You're such a good friend to people Terri and I appreciate you leaving me all the positive comments. I've been a bit behind on catching up with everyone but you and Joe are definitely in my thoughts.

  11. Poor Joe. Glad it wasn't anything more serious - & that you two don't mess around & he got some help.
BOOOO - I hate when we try a new place & it was a waste of time & money - but at least , now you know.

  12. Sounds like you had another full and blessed weekend! I'm glad you have such fun and spread joy around to others. :)

Feeling bad for Joe. I had that cough last winter that was at least partly asthma and it would not go away. I even strained my neck coughing one night! After about three months I threw a fit at the doctor's office and they put me on an antibiotic and prednisone...worked like a charm (just 3 months too late!).

  15. Breakfast being my favorite meal of the day, I'm soooo sorry for y'all's dismal experience at Bedrock! :(

Say, what all did you gather for Shirley's Boredom Busters bag? That's a really novel idea and much appreciated, I'm sure!
Your new cat pillow is precious! Having met one of their rescue cats when he came to the station years ago, that Rescue is near and dear to my heart.

Prayers for Joe's speedy relief from that awful cough!

    1. I stopped at Dollar General and got a word search book, an adult coloring book, colored pens, and a deck of cards. She has been using them all, but loves the word search book.

  17. Hope that prednisone gets Joe back to normal quickly. Glad your friend Shirley is doing well too, and your boredom busters were a good idea!

  18. Teri, I'm really sorry to read that Joe is having those asthmatic problems on top of everything else. I pray that cough is done by April 18 and pray that he passes the test.
I never had a cat, but our new dog Annie sheds unbelievably! We always had schnauzers which don't shed, so I'm trying to get over it because Annie is the sweetest dog. I'll remember to call the hairs glitter.

  19. I bet the breakfast you made was a lot better than the one at that restaurant! I made a good breakfast on Saturday too at Sam and Jenn's. Can't eat like that every day for sure, but it sure tasted good on a special occasion.

Ageism. We had felt like Dick was experiencing that at work. Until he no longer needed their healthcare plan due to going on medicare.
