Now or Never Hodgepodge and the April Challenge...

Thanks to our Hodgepodge hostess, Joyce, for this week’s questions.  Write your answers and link back HERE to join in with all of us Hodgepodgers for this fun meme!

1. They say you learn something new every day. What did you learn yesterday?  Yesterday I learned how to turn on the hot tub jets up at the clubhouse, so Joe could hopefully get some relief from his back pain.  I sat in the sun while he sat in the bubbles.

2. Have you ever had a now or never moment? Elaborate. I’m sure there have been more than a few but the first one I thought of when I read the question was from years ago (still in my 20s) when I went snow skiing for the first (and only) time.  I held onto the rope that carried me to the top of the beginners’ hill and stood there looking down for at least 15 minutes while little five-year-olds went whooshing past me. I finally decided there was no other way down… now or never.  I made it down without falling and never put skis on again. Not for me.

3.  April 25th is National Telephone Day. Do you still have a land line, or have you gone mobile only?
We still have a landline, bundled in with our cable and internet.  Same number we’ve had since we moved here almost 29 years ago.  When you receive a text message do you respond immediately? Yes, if I see it come in. Sometimes I miss one for a few hours. I’m not tied to my phone.  Last time you turned your phone off?  I silence it often but rarely turn it off.  In two or three sentences share with us a story/memory/incident from your childhood (or something current if that's too hard) where the telephone is featured.  It always makes me chuckle when I think of the (princess style) wall phone in our kitchen when I was growing up. It had a really stretched out, long cord that curled in on itself from being stretched from the kitchen and into the dining room and back to the kitchen again.  Some of us (ahem) liked to walk back and forth while talking to girlfriends and the cord stretched far enough to reach the ‘fridge and snacks on the counter.  It also hung right above Dad’s chair at the kitchen table.  If a friend called while he was sitting there, he could talk to my/our friends longer than we could sometimes… “DAD! Give me the phone please!!”  Great memories!  More than three sentences. Sorry!

4. Close call, at someone's beck and call, call the shots, call a meeting, call it quits, call in sick, call on the carpet, wake up call...which call have you 'heard' recently? Explain.
Well, while Joe was really sick with this cold, I was at his beck and call and am again with his sciatica kicking up again.  I am ready to call it quits on this cold I’m still dealing with. The coughing just won’t stop. Sigh.

5. What subject do you wish you'd paid more attention to in school?
I paid attention in school and had good grades. What I DO wish is that I had taken Spanish and really learned it well. It was the only ‘foreign’ language our school offered, and I wasn’t interested at the time.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Joe and I have been watching “The Terror” on TV.  I find it extremely disturbing. It’s a true story and I know how it ends. It’s not pretty. It is extremely disturbing to me. Have you seen it?  The 'human condition' can be frightening, disturbing, (and also wonderful).

I started watching The Terror(2 episodes)but I was working on a project so I'm kinda lost. I will have to watch them again. I've heard it is very good.

  4. I hope the hot tub gave Joe some relief. I know sciatica very well, as I suffer from the same thing. I have never heard of The Terror....will look it up. I wish I had taken a foreign language in school too....spanish probably as it seems to be the second language around my area. Have a good day.

  6. I read about the Terror years ago. A very scary true tale!
I like these kinds of posts that let us get to know people better.
I sure hope your husband feels better soon. Its awful to be in pain.

  7. How I remember hooking onto those rope lines leading to the top of our bunny slope! Terribly uncoordinated; nevertheless, I loved trying.

Given the growing Hispanic population, I too wish I'd signed up for Spanish lessons in HS. No interest. They did begin offering Russian the year after I graduated. That would've been cool!

  8. We had the same wall phone with the stretched out cord from over extending it! Those were the days, eh? ha.

  9. I would love to sit in a hot tub! We just moved and now have a pool so at least I can lay around in my pool float.

  10. I enjoyed the phone memory, Terri! We have one of those long cords, although I almost never talk on the land line anymore. It's usually our son calling to talk to one of the kids on that line and they enjoy the long cord that reaches clear out of the kitchen! I am so sorry to hear about Joe's sciatica. That is the worst. I hope he gets some relief. And you too. This is no time to be feeling miserable with a cold. (Is any time the right time?) I wish I'd taken Latin.

  11. Even though we are from Colorado, we have never skied. We took our kids skiing, but my fav part of the experience was the hot chocolate inside the lodge with a good book beside the fireplace.

    Get well soon!

  12. I'm so sorry to hear that you and Joe are feeling a bit under the weather. I hope you both get better, soon.
I think we all had one of those really long phone cords at our house, while growing up :)

  14. Aches and pains sure make life difficult, don't they? I hope I'm getting some things figured out for mine but it is a process. A hot tub sounds wonderful! I haven't seen the show you mentioned...it doesn't sound like I'm missing anything.

  15. I haven't heard of The Terror, but the name alone makes me say no. I don't do well with scary things, especially true scary things. I do hope you're both feeling 100% soon. Coughs linger-ugh!!

  16. Greetings Terri from NH. I agree with you on the skiing thing. The ski industry is huge here in NH, buts its not for me. Our landline is part of our cable bundle also. We find the voice male feature helps us to screen out the telemarketers more effectively. I am sorry to hear about Joe's chronic back pain. I hope that he finds relief. I agree with him on the loss of respect for life. Thanks for your visit and comments.
