Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 314
Our hostess, Joyce, gives us the questions, we answer them and then link up with all the other Hodgepodgers for some Wednesday fun!!
1. Growing up, were you close to your grandparents? Yes. Tell us one or two specific things you remember about them. Granny Kelly's fried chicken was the best in the whole wide world. Pawpaw Kelly liked big-ten wrestling and it was on the TV every Sunday afternoon when we were there visiting. Grandma James loved us but was a control freak. There were always home-made pop sickles in the freezer and coloring books and crayons in the cupboard. Papaw James could build anything - from furniture to doll houses to real houses. I can't leave out my step-grandma who liked to read things to whoever would listen - signs on the roadway, newspaper articles, magazine stories. Yes, she did. All the time. Papaw Cameron smoked cigars and that smell always makes me think of him and his funny jokes/stories.
2. What's an item you were attached to as a child? As the oldest of four, I didn't get attached to things because they always got passed down. I really can't think of thing that I was terribly attached to, except maybe my Nancy Drew books. What happened to it? Everything got passed down the line.
3. When you look out your window, do you see the forest or the trees (literally and figuratively)? No trees other than a few palms, literally. Figuratively, I can see right through the trees. Explain. Light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak...or sunshine through the branches of the trees. Retirement is just around the corner.
4. Do you like sour candies? Sometimes. Which of the 'sour' foods listed below would you say is your favorite?
grapefruit, Greek yogurt, tart cherries, lemons, limes, sauerkraut, buttermilk, or kumquats
Have you ever eaten a kumquat? No. What's your favorite dish containing one of the sour foods on the list? I love a good Reuben sandwich with sauerkraut. I eat grapefruit most every morning.
5. July 1st marked the mid point of 2017. In fifteen words or less, tell us how it's going so far. This is my year of CHANGE and it sure has been changing.
6. Insert your own random thought here. I still had a balance on a Bealls gift card I received for Christmas. Bealls is a Florida store and is probably our favorite place to shop. Tuesday is "senior shopping day" and we older folks get an extra 10% off our purchases. I found a top that was already marked down and the final price was $3.80. I bought a $65.00 purse that ended up costing $33.17. There is still a balance on the card. That's how I like to shop!! I'm kind of addicted to purses. Help me please. It's turquoise!!

I had to giggle at the purse.....I am the same way about watches! I am so excited for you and the nearing of the retirement day. I an anxious to see how things change for you and how much you enjoy those changes. It is definitely a different life. You were so wise to plan ahead, with your move, and all the little things that will make life enjoyable at this stage. As for memories with grandparents, I lived with my grandmother (and other family members) from the time I was 3 until high school, and have many, many memories. I too love a Reuben sandwich and no to kumquats. Hope your Wednesday is happy!

ReplyDeleteI like kumquats and they were in our backyard in Florida when we were growing up. We use to pick them and eat them, disgusting my mom, lolol.

I am loving the stories of everyone's grandparents. Both of my grandfathers were addicted to wrestling...or wrasslin as we say here! I can remember watching the broadcast from Chattanooga every Saturday evening if I was at their homes. I hope my grands will have fond memories of me.

Bealls is the best... we have two... the regular and discount store.. odds and ends at thrift store prices.
ReplyDeleteWell I had to laugh at your purse addiction. But I'd say that a new turquoise purse is perfect to celebrate your upcoming retirement, right? Lol So sad that you had to pass everything along to a sibling, but that's probably why your house doesn't have clutter. :-)
ReplyDeleteThose are some good memories of your grandparents. It's funny the little things that stick with us. I laughed when you mentioned your grandmother's chicken because I remember my great-grandmother being known for her chicken, too, just not it a good way. She always gave us boiled (ick!) chicken legs. I like a good Reuben now and then, too. I'm thankful that Arby's serves them so I can just pick one up when the mood strikes. It certainly has been a year of big change for you!

Hi Terri, I only had a grandmother on my moms side, My grandfather died before I was born. She and my uncle lived upstairs from us. It was nice having them there. My dad was adopted by an aunt who I never met. My aunt and uncle lived next door so we had family around most of the time. My obsession is shoes. I love shoes. Cant wear the high heels I used to but still love shoes. Hugs, LJ
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's anything wrong with a purse addiction : ) It's been fun reading the grandparent memories today. My grandmother made the best roast beef. Whenever I make roast and mashed potatoes with green beans we refer to it as the 'grandma meal'. Enjoy your day, and your countdown to retirement!
ReplyDeleteGranny's chicken was fried in LARD and I'm sure if I got some to use, it would taste pretty close. The lard is the key to those old-time recipes I think. Roast beef and mashed potatoes is probably my favorite meal - especially if there is green tomato relish for the roast beef!
DeleteAnd I'm always looking for the perfect purse. Great deals. I know from your past posts what great relationship you had with your grandma and step grandma. I hope my grandkids will always love me and have sweet memories. You really have had many changes this year.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I call a shopping trip! Both of my grandmothers made the best fried chicken ever. I've never had it better anywhere. What was it about grandmothers that made them such wonderful cooks? I've never been a fan of the Rueben sandwich but my parents LOVE them. How many days left?

ReplyDeleteI ate kumquats at my grandparents' home here in Florida...only I only ate the SKIN. The fruit is too tart, and the skin is kind of sweet and edible. I do love grapefruit. My parents had a wonderful tree of them, and naval oranges, which I really miss. My maternal grandparents lived in Ohio, and we visited them in the summer. I loved going there, but my grandmother was sick for most of the years I remember, so she wasn't able to do much with us. My grandfather was fun to be near...but again, it just wasn't often enough. My paternal grandparents lived near us in Florida, and we were together for all holidays,birthdays, etc., but other than that, I never felt that "close" to them. Loved them, but they weren't the hands-on, cuddly types. I still carry a purse that I bought over 15 years ago. It was sewn by an older woman, made from tapestry and very strong nylon handles and lining. I have carried it almost every day...can't bear to part with it. It's still very functional and looks good. I don't like to change purses. Too much trouble. I know, I'm weird for a girl. LOL. I do love Beall's...they do have good bargains when you look for them. I haven't been there in a while...since retirement I find that I don't need much in the way of new clothes. We don't go many places...and we live in the woods...and I'm happy not to have to "dress up" anymore!!

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading about your memories of your grandparents. My mom’s parents passed before I was born, my Dad’s mom passe when I was 4 and my Dad’s dad had 10 kids and so many grandkids that we didn’t get special time with him. That’s part of why it’s important to me to spend lots of time with my grandkids.
I loved books as a kid, especially Nancy Drew! We didn’t have a tv, but went to the library a lot and always had a box of books to read.
Trees – lots of trees around here!
I like all those things but not the greek yogurt - yuck! I don't know if I ever had a kumquat though.
2017 is a real changing year for you.

I always find super good deals at Bealls and always forget to go there when I am looking. LOL. Somehow though I do end up there.
