Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 292

Happy New Year Hodgepodgers and welcome to 2017! Raise your hand if you love a fresh start-clean slate. I have a lot of fun travel on my January calendar so will need to make one small adjustment to our Hodgepodge schedule this month, and that's this-no Hodgepodge next week (January 11th). In spite of all my comings and goings I think I can manage to make the rest of the Wednesdays happen.

Okay, we're here today so let's go...answer on your own blog, then slide back here tomorrow and add your link to the party. See you there!

1. Share one favorite moment/memory from your Christmas holiday.  We had our youngest son, Jeff, with us for the first (and now only) Christmas at our current home in Florida.  Twenty-seven Christmases without having him with us.  Blame his job and Safeway Stores for not being generous with letting employees off during busy holidays.  He is a meat manager and sometimes has Christmas day off, but they are just too busy leading up to Christmas to make it reasonable for him to travel to Florida. We were thrilled to have him with us!!  Now perhaps we can get him down next year to spend a first Christmas in our new home with us!

2. What was the best thing you ate over the holidays?  Everything I ate during the holidays was good. Was it homemade or store bought?  I made a delicious ham with all the trimmings for Christmas dinner.  It turned out well, if I do say so myself.  If it was homemade did you make it?  I also made two kinds of candy that were both very good.

3. What was one of the most beautiful things you saw over the holidays?  The little children's Christmas play at church.  We had to go to the family Mass at 4:00 on Christmas eve, because we had to get to the airport in Tampa to pick up our son.  The little ones are SO precious!!

4. What does fresh start mean to you?  This year, for us, it means moving into a new house to begin a fresh start leading to my retirement this summer!

5. On a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being very positive and 1 being not so great) how would you rate 2016 in terms of personal achievement and well being? Explain.  An 8, I think.  Joe recovered so well from his strokes which was a personal achievement for both of us, actually - as well as our well being.

6. Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse, or just general uselessness. Go here to read more about how the words were chosen or, if you're like me, to find out what in the world the word or phrase even means or the context in which it's used. There were quite a few on this year's list I'd never heard before.

Here's the 2017 list of banished words-

You, Sir-focus-Bete Noire-Town Hall Meeting-Post Truth-guesstimate-831-historic-manicured-echo chamber-on fleek-bigly-ghost-Dadbod-listicle-get your dander up-selfie drone-frankenfruit-disruption

Which word on the list would you most like to see banished in 2017?  I can't think of one word that bugged me this year.  What word or phrase would you add to the list? I haven't even heard of some of those!  Must have had my head buried.  I've got nothing to add.

7. Large or small, light or deep, share with us one goal you have for the new year.  LARGE!!  We have to clean out a house we've lived in for almost 28 years and get ready to move! Huge!

8. Insert your own random thought here.  God's got this. I know He does. It will all work out in His time.  Your prayers for us are appreciated!

Thanks for your visit today!  Happy Wednesday!  Peace & hugs!

  4. Enjoyed you answers as always. We moved from our home of 35 years...it was so difficult, but we did it and everything worked out okay....AND WE SURVIVED!! lol...there were times when that was doubtful. Hang on, it's quite a ride.

  5. My dad reminds me all the time to--remember, God is in control. It has become my mantra. :) I'm so excited about the move and your retirement but I do not envy having to pack up a house that is filled with 28 years of loving and living. I always enjoyed the children's Christmas plays. So cute! Have a wonderful Wednesday!

  6. God in control and I pray everything goes smoothly. Time will fly by and you will be moved in, and retired before you know it. Good answers today.

  7. What a wonderful Christmas present to have your son with you! I am so glad you were able to enjoy that and I hope it won't be the last time.

  8. I know you will get it done, but I know it's huge because I remember our last move from a house where we had been for 30 years. Lots of stuff, but you can do it. Just pace yourself. So glad your son was with you for Christmas.

  9. I didn't realize this was the first Christmas Jeff had been able to spend with y'all (in 27 years). How special for all of you!
I love (and agree with) your random thought. I'll keep y'all in my prayers, and hope you'll do the same for us, as we are in a time of uncertainty.

  10. Nice answers, Terri!
I didn't realize your son worked in food service; and yes, that must be uber stressful in days leading up to the holidays. Watching the crowds at our local supermarket last month, there's NO WAY I could do that. So glad he was able to wrangle time off to be with y'all!

  12. Wow! I didn't realize you had lived in the same place for 28 years! You DO have a big job ahead...but it will be exciting...and you are starting a new chapter in your lives so it will be fun. We have moved quite often, but we still have accumulated tons of stuff that I don't know how to let go of. So I will be watching you to see how you do it!! Blessings to you and your hubby. It's going to be a good year!

  14. How lovely to have your son with your for Christmas. I have a friend who has a different dilemma. They have never had Christmas in their own home - she has always gone with her husband and their children to her in-laws. Now the in-laws are too elderly and unwell to change their plans so this won't change while the in-laws are alive. She's resigned to that but I know some years it's been hard. The move is bound to seem daunting but I'm sure you are more than capable of organisinge everything.

  16. Just as we have "watched" other blogging girlfriends go through life changes, such as selling and buying homes, I look forward to following your adventure this new year with moving, retirement, and whatever comes along.

So glad that Joe has done so well after his strokes in 2016. The Lord has blessed you both greatly.

  17. You sure do have a fresh start this year! And I can imagine that the packing and sorting will be a task. It would be at my house!
I'm so glad you got to spend Christmas with Jeff!

  18. I'm so glad that Jeff was able to spend Christmas with you. What a year you two have had, and now 2017 promising a new home and retirement. Lots going on. We've been in this house for 28 years also. I have a sneaking hunch that it's going to take me way longer to clean out this house. And I better get a good start in 2017!! Many blessings on your new year, Terri and Joe. xo

  19. I know very well the highs and lows of moving house. Good luck with the process and be kind to yourself in all the doing. So glad you had your son with you for Christmas. Happy new year!

  20. Good luck as you turn the page into retirement. It was a difficult life change for me but the trepidation abates as you settle in to your new life. All the best in the new house, #movingblowschunks. God's blessing upon you in the new year.
