Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Surf City (1963)
... Because Melissa suggested Jan and Dean. Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) When the song was written, "Surf City" was a fictitious town.* Tell us a song that is set in a real place. New York, New York and My Kind of Town (Chicago). Frank sang them both quite well!
2) In the song, Jan and Dean sing about riding around in a 1934 station wagon, which means the car was 29 years old when the song was recorded. How old is your vehicle? My Kia Sportage is 10 years old. The Ford Escort I traded in when I got it was 12 years old. We keep them and care for them as long as we can!
3) Are you good on a surf board? I have never tried it and would not try it now (maybe for $1M....).
4) When you spend time out in the sun, are you careful about applying sunscreen? Indeed. I burn in about 10 minutes unless I have on at least SPF30.
5) Dean's original partner was Arnie Ginsburg. When Dean was drafted into the Army, Arnie didn't feel like waiting so he abandoned show business and went back to college. Today he holds several patents. What is something you wish someone would invent? How about a diet pill that really, really works?!!
6) Jan was a perpetual student who juggled college with recording. He not only graduated from UCLA, he completed two years of medical school at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. Have you ever considered going back to school? I did go back to school at age 48 and graduated Magna Cum Laude with my BA Degree at age 50. It CAN be done!
7) In 1966, Jan was sidelined by a serious car accident. During the years that he was unable to perform, partner Dean became a graphic artist. He designed logos and album covers for Steve Martin, Diana Ross and others. Do you feel you respond most to words, pictures, or music? I respond to all three about the same.
8) In 1978, CBS made a TV movie about Jan and Dean. If they approached you about a made-for-TV movie of your life, who would you like to play you? Ha ha ha!! It would have to be someone with a huge sense of humor to make it even a little bit interesting. How about Melissa McCarthy? I love her!
9) Random question: Growing up, how did you learn about the birds and the bees? (From books/the web, from parents, from your friends...) Well, my mom liked to tell this story about me. When I was a mere 5 or 6, she got a book for my age group from the library to read to me about "the birds and the bees". She started reading it to me and says that after about 10 minutes I looked up at her and asked when we would get to the good parts. True story.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend! *Huntington Beach changed it's name to Surf City in the 1990s.
Thanks to Crazy Sam Winters for this week's Saturday:9!! Thanks for your visit today! Happy Saturday! Peace & hugs!

I liked Jan and Dean and remember Jan's accident, so long ago. Your 'birds and bees' story is so cute. Enjoy your Saturday!!
ReplyDeleteA big high five to you on the degree with honors! And the birds and the bees story was funny. She started early.
ReplyDeleteYes, going back to school and getting a degree can be done, smiles. I enjoyed your answers and I think I will join in...smiles. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteSurfing looks so fun but I have never tried it.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Since I do not swim, surfing is out.lol and I loved your response to your mom!! So funny!
ReplyDeleteI also went back to school and became an RN, graduated when I was 43 and have never regretted it. All the while rearing 3 children, partner with hubby in construction company. Anyone can do it if they want it. As to surf boarding...no way, no how. I love the story about the birds and bees! lol Happy Saturday.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, going back and getting your degree. I think my aunt was about the same age when she got divorced and went to nursing school. I would go, but can never decide what I'd want to study.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how many of us chose Melissa McCarthy for the movie about us.
Blast from the past! ... remembering "Dead Man's Curve" and the awful irony of Jan's accident.
ReplyDeleteHow proud you must have felt, receiving that degree - with honors! I've heard, those who 'go back' tend to perform better and appreciate it more. (... I'm still waiting on the urge. LOL!)
It's wonderful to hear Frank Sinatra's silky voice wafting out of my radio. Oh, yeah, that's sweet.
ReplyDeleteEverybody wants a diet pill. Me too! *giggle* I heard something exciting along those lines, there is a procedure available called "Laser Liposuction". No anesthesia, not expensive, no 'down' time, fat never returns. Pretty cool. I watched it on YouTube the other day. Wonder if it really works.
Hope your day is blessed. ~:)
Great achievement on your degree.
