Hodgepodge
Questions-Volume 166
Welcome to another week of Hodgepodging. Answer the
questions on your own blog, then scoot back HERE to link up with all the other
lucky people joining the fun. See you there!
1. Do you have an interest in learning about your family's
heritage? Why or why not? If you know a little bit about your roots, share an
interesting piece of trivia or a fun fact about someone who goes way back on
your family tree. Why, yes indeed I do have an interest in my family’s
heritage. I am a member of DAR and enjoy genealogy. I think knowing your ‘roots’
is important to understanding family dynamics and your own genetic makeup. I have two fun facts about two of my
ancestors! My Revolutionary Soldier
ancestor, John Mahaffey, was actually a spy!! He went to England and sent back
information for our side!! I found that in a newspaper article not too long
ago! My great-great-grandfather (my Granny’s grandpa) was reputed to be quite a
ladies man. He left my Granny’s grandmother for another woman (terrible thing
back then). They later learned that he had left that woman and lost touch with
him. I hired a genealogist (this was before computers, in the 70s!) in Illinois, because we
heard that is where he ended up living. She did find him for me, and sent me
some very funny divorce papers, written out in long hand. He divorced his THIRD
wife because she gave him “…a disease commonly called the clap”!! That is actually written in the divorce
papers and was his grounds for getting the divorce. My granny had died by the
time I learned that information, but I’m sure she would have loved hearing
about it.

2. Branch Rickey, the baseball exec credited with signing Jackie Robinson, is quoted as saying-
"Luck
is the residue of design."
Agree or disagree? Why? If I am interpreting it
correctly, I think I agree. I really don’t believe in “luck”. We plan our lives
and make our choices, some good-some bad.
If something good happens, it is probably not “luck” but because you
chose to be in the right place at the right time. He chose to sign Jackie Robinson…in the right
place, at the right time.
3. In the town where you currently reside, what's your favorite green space? I am so blessed to live in Lakeland, FL. We have so many beautiful green spaces!! I work a half block from Lake Morton Park, which is a bird sanctuary, with over 40 swans. I work a half mile from Lake Hollingsworth Park, which is the walkers’ lake (3 miles –or 5K – to walk all the way around it), and I work a half mile the other direction, from Lake Mirror Park and the beautiful Hollis Gardens. Then there is the lovely Munn Park in the middle of our historic downtown. They are all favorites. I love my entire city, actually! Lakeland is "The City of Swans".

4. Who is your favorite comedian? Most any who don’t use bad language! The “F” word does not make me laugh. What is
wrong with people? Jeanne Robertson is hilarious!!
5. March is National Nutrition Month, and almost everyone needs to improve their diet in some way. What about you? How can you improve your nutrition on a daily basis? Will you try? I need to stop eating sugar and white flour. If I could just give up carbs…… I have tried – over and over and over. I lose 10 pounds and gain back 10 pounds. Yes, I'll keep trying, but right now I am in a terrible "I don't care" place, and I need to move away from it soon!!
6. Which of these green expressions have you 'experienced' in recent weeks -green with envy, green thumb, green around the gills, or give the green light? Explain. I don’t envy other people; I do not have a green thumb; thank goodness I haven’t been sick for months now; so I guess I gave the green light to get the floors redone, but that was back in January/February. I don’t need to explain that one, if you have been reading my blogs for a while. All I did was complain about my messy house.
7. Where is one place you don't mind waiting? I hate waiting. Period. Doesn’t matter where.
8. Insert your own random thought here. I am so happy that my friend (who is also my barber), Teena, has healed from her recent emergency surgery and is back at work!! It was great catching up with her last night, when she cut my hair for the first time in weeks and weeks. Her son did a great job for me, but I am so happy to have Teena back. I didn't even care if she cut my hair, it was just good to see her doing so much better!

I would love your area of Florida....to be able to work within walking distance to such a beautiful park and bird sanctuary of sorts. Wow.
ReplyDeleteI think genealogy is so interesting. I love your family history.
ReplyDeleteJeanne Robertson is so funny! It's hard to find a clean comic.
That was too funny about your family, I think we all have skeletons, lolol. Loved your Hodgepodge answers. Blessings
ReplyDeleteMy mom really enjoyed looking into her family tree. She even joined ancestory.com. After she died my sister got her research so I have no idea how far back she had gotten.
ReplyDeleteThat is neat that you found out some interesting stuff about your relatives. Have a great day!
Wow, Terri, you have some pretty interesting ancestors! Don't you love finding out those things. The spy. How exciting! And I'm so with you on the comedian thing. Comedy used to be just really funny. Now they try to out-crude one another. It's disgusting. I like good, clean fun - and THAT is funny.
ReplyDeleteI need to get my diet in order too! And my half sister did our genealogy for my dad side - wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy far back,
ReplyDeleteJeanne robertson is hysterical!! You're so lucky to have that part of history in your hands. Very Interesting!
ReplyDeleteI am stopping by from the hodgepodge linkup.
I think you know how much I love genealogy. That green space you mentioned is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love Steve Martin. I said this on Judy's blog, but I loved him in "All of Me" and "Roxanne". I can still see him on SNL with a vice grip on his head and saying something about having a headache and not knowing why. He also had one of those arrows t brought his head. I used to have one as a child. LOL

Sheila
Sorry, IPAD messed me up... Arrow through his head.
ReplyDeleteI liked your answers today. I also love Jeanne Robertson. She's so funny. And her comedy routines are G rated, which is unusual these days. I can't stand the awful language either. It's totally unnecessary.
ReplyDeleteI've been into genealogy for years and it is fun, interesting but also frustrating, as you know. Hate those brick walls.
I also love Jeanne Robertson. She's funny and has great style! We have quite a few parks in our neck of the woods too. Now if the knee deep snow would just melt maybe we could get out and walk in them : )
ReplyDeleteI don't mind waiting if I have something to read, but I agree waiting isn't usually pleasant. I'm glad your friend is better. I know we'll start eating better when the summer comes. That's when I eat more vegetables and fruit.
ReplyDeleteGood news about your hairdresser. You live in such a pretty area. Hope you are having a nice week.
ReplyDeleteI guess when we go digging for history, we have to be ready for what me might learn! I'm sure there are colorful characters in all families.
ReplyDeleteOh, and carbs? Can't seem to do without them. Sigh.
Jeanne Robertson IS hilarious, no one can tell a story like her!!!!!
ReplyDeleteMy folks used to live in Lakeland, very nice town.
I loved the clip of Jeanne Robertson! Thanks for sharing :)
