Throwback Thursday...

I am sharing a couple more photos from the boxes I have been going through.  The first one is of my sweet dad. I'm not sure what year it was taken, but I can sure see that ornery side of him in this photo. Judging from the clothing he is wearing, I would put it in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Maybe one of my sisters (who read my blogs on email) can place it (Patti or Tammy?).  Surely do miss him. We lost him to cancer in 1989, when he was just 63.

Orlyn Albert Kelly  (1926-1989)

This second photo is of Dad's mom. My grandparents were farmers, until they sold the farm and Papaw retired from farming. They moved into town (Washington Court House, Ohio) and he went to work for the county, mowing, and did that into his 70s, when they made him retire.  Granny Kelly was such a good cook. Oh my, her fried chicken was the best I've ever had.  I can even remember her killing the chickens, on the farm, when I was very young.  I also remember the outhouse. They had a tub and sink in their bathroom, but not a toilet - that was outside!  I put the strip of photos above the one of her sitting in her rocking chair, as a contrast. In the strip, she was about 18 years old and carefree... in the other, she is just worn out from working. She looks so tired, it almost makes me cry. If you enlarge the photo (click on it), you can see the holes in her stockings.  When they moved from the farm, Granny planted shrubs and flowers all over their new yard, front and back. It was a ritual, that when we went to visit, you HAD to walk through the yard with Granny and look at all her beautiful flowers. They also had a big garden and a grape arbor.  The yard was a wonderland for kids (and adults). I did not, unfortunately, get her green thumb.

Leota Eldora Kelly (1896-1976)
(A little genealogy...Granny's maiden name was Swiss, but her grandfather, Andrew, came here from Germany, and changed his name to Swiss, from Switzer.)

Tomorrow, I will be spending the day with Joe, at the Southeastern University Leadership Forum.  I am so looking forward to it!!  I am excited to hear Dr. Ben Carson speak in person!!

I wish you a good Thursday!!  Thanks so much for coming by! Peace, love & hugs.

  7. How I love seeing old photos like these! I have simiiar memories of my grandmother (my mother's mother) too. She lived on a farm with two of my uncles and milked 3 cows until she was no longer able. I remember I loved it when they made sausages, mincemeat and other pork products, and I loved her shortbread and sometimes she would make hotcross buns. Her family was from Scotland.

Hope you and Joe enjoy tomorrow.

  10. Terri, as a genealogist since I was a teenager, I do love your posts and photos. And you are so right - your grandmother looks soooo tired. I'm sure she was like my grandmother, never idle, always doing something useful!

  11. Poor grandma. She looked so tired. Your dad was a very handsome man. I've been doing our genealogy for the last several years. I love seeing old photos and hearing the stories from years gone by.

  12. That was enjoyable hearing about your family. I enjoy genealogy, even those who aren't "related" (we're all related thru Adam, but I'm sure all know what I mean). I always tell them, genealogy is a journey, not a destination.

It would be fun to hear Dr. Carson speak. I like him. Please do share about the experience when convenient. He seems like such a fine American. ~:)
