Hodgepodge & Honor Flight!

Some days I don't have anything to post, and then days like today, I have the Wednesday Hodgepodge, as well as photos from last night's Honor Flight celebration! Whew. This will be long. If you stick with it, thanks!  If not, I understand!

I'll start with our evening at the airport, to help welcome home our Veterans who went to the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C., on the first Honor Flight to go out of the Lakeland airport. We are proud and very excited!!  Joe and I went to the airport early, and had dinner in the restaurant that overlooks the runways. We were lucky to find a parking place close to the terminal (later, cars were parked so far away, I would have had to call a taxi to get to the car!).  I'll note that eating out on the low carb diet is fairly easy. I just order double veggies and no starch.   So, here is a link to today's newspaper article about the Honor Flight:  http://www.theledger.com/article/20131112/NEWS/131119787?tc=cr

It was a moving experience, in which Joe and I both were honored to participate, just by being there. I'm sure there were over 3,000 people there, with signs and flags, and the Lakeland Community Band played lots of Glenn Miller songs while we waited.

Above is a shot of the restaurant at the airport (top floor), looking out over the runways.

The plane has landed! We were far, far away, but it was still exciting!

The honor guard leading the Veterans into the terminal.

I caught a photo of one of the Veterans. They were all moved by the reception.

And now for the Wednesday Hodgepodge!  Thank you, Joyce, for another interesting group of questions!  If you want to join in on this weekly fun, visit Joyce here:  http://www.fromthissideofthepond.com/

1. Describe a typical Sunday from your childhood.  Sunday school, then church. We could walk to church, and I was allowed to wear hose and heels – but only to church – at age 12, and felt quite grown up.  Mom always cooked a big Sunday dinner and we rarely had just the immediate family at the table. Seemed there was always a friend or a relative (or two or three) visiting on Sunday and there for dinner.  I miss crowded, noisy Sundays.

2. How comfortable are you with uncertainty? Explain. Oh my, that’s an interesting question. I really can’t remember the last time I felt uncertain about something. Does that make me comfortable with it, then, since I don’t even recognize it in my life anymore?

3. What have you accomplished recently that might be described as crafty, as in 'arts and crafts' crafty?  If crafty doesn't work for you, how about handy? Or both?  I submitted two photographs that I took in Italy, and turned them into a crafty project.  They will be for sale this week, here at the Museum where I work, in our Art Squared fund raiser.  I posted about this on my blog a week or so ago, but here are the photos of my completed 8 x 8 pieces:

4. Have you ever worked in a 'food place'? What did you take away from the experience? I worked in an ice cream parlor when I was in high school, for two summers. That was fun. Twenty years ago, I had my own bakery for three years “The Wedding Cake”. All I did was cakes, for any occasion, but my ‘specialty’ was wedding cakes.  I got totally burned out and will never work in food service again. It is a thankless business that sucks the life out of you!  Maybe the worst part was dealing with brides and mothers of brides….Enough said!!

5.
Cold turkey, talk turkey, what a turkey...in recent days, which turkey phrase or idiom best applies to you and why? Click on the word turkey if you need to read more about the meaning behind each phrase. Cold turkey – I’m off carbs and doing it ‘cold turkey’.

6. If you could have any one guest join your Thanksgiving dinner table, who would it be?  Just one?  I would love to revisit the Thanksgivings from my childhood, and there would be 30+ people there, laughing and loving – all the cousins, aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents…. I surely do miss the big family holidays.

7. What is one thing you must accomplish today?  I’m writing this on Tuesday – I need to do payroll, at work.  I need to get to the grocery for a few things and we are joining the crowd to welcome home our WWII vets who are on their Honor Flight today (Tuesday).  Wednesday, I have a DAR meeting at lunch time.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  My thoughts this morning are all about the Honor Flight experience, and how blessed I feel to live in the USA.

Thanks for stopping by my page! Wishing you a good day!  Peace, love & hugs.

  3. For so many reasons I have tears in my eyes. Tanks for sharing. He's something for you. This is taken from a poem I often see in English memorial celebrations...

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.

  4. Typos again. Sorry! I really need a computer and not an IPAD. Not that I am not grateful.

    1. Computers make typos too, but I agree ipads make it more difficult to see them until after you've clicked 'publish'. Why doesn't this site have an edit button I wonder?

  5. I don't use any of these 'turkey' expressions either, except maybe gobble, gobble because I'm hungry now.

Sunday lunch was also my favourite. In my church the minister took turns going to different houses. I remember helping my mother get everything more or less prepared before we went to church, so things wouldn't take so long when we got home afterwards. Good answers as always.

  11. How special that you got to have the Honor Flight experience! I'm so happy that our vets are being honored in this way.

So you used to make wedding cakes! How awesome, but I could see how working with brides and moms could be difficult!
