1. Joyce's
sister is celebrating a birthday today. Happy Birthday to her little sis! What's one
way you're like your siblings? If you don't have siblings how are you
like your lifelong best friend or cousin?
I have three siblings and the only way we are
alike is that we were born of the same parents, three years apart, oh, and we
all graduated from college. We have
lived apart from each other for so long, and all have different careers. I
can’t even say we are all tall, because my youngest sister isn’t!! I have blonde hair, Patti has red hair, and
Tammy has brown hair. My brother (who died 10 years ago) had strawberry blonde
hair. Patti and I both played trumpet in the band, so there IS that! She is more musical than me; Tammy is more creative than me; Randy was smarter than me....
2. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of yourself at age eighteen? Ignorant of life - naive.
3. Sculptor-actor-painter-dancer...if you could excel in one of these arts, which would you choose and why? IF I could excel in one of those, it would be dancer. I love to dance, but am terrible at it, and now my knees won’t even let me be terrible at it.
4. What's a scent that takes you back in time, and where does it take you? Ah….chlorine. The public pool in summer, as a pre-teen wishing I was more grown up – listening to Rickie Nelson, on the juke box, sing Travelin’ Man (over and over and over) and eating frozen Milky Way candy bars on a stick from the refreshment stand. That song takes me back to the chlorine smell, too…both triggers! I was allowed to go to the pool by myself at age 9 (rode my bike there) and felt very independent, and was very interested in the teenage girls laughing and talking around the juke box, and continuing to play Rickie Nelson, (over and over and over). Chlorine.
5. November is for Peanut Butter Lovers (National Peanut Butter Lovers Month). Are you a lover or a hater? What's your favorite dish/recipe that calls for peanut butter? I’m really neither. I will eat peanut butter occasionally, so don’t hate it, but I also don’t crave it. I like to make Buckeyes at Christmas time, but I do them in a pan, and cut them into squares, rather than roll them into balls. I will also just use peanut butter as a dip for apple slices now and then.
6. What do people thank you personally for most often? I don’t know how personal it is, but when I shop at Publix, they always thank me! I hear it there, more often than anywhere else. At work, I get a thank you when I help someone with a problem, but am fortunate that there aren’t too many employee problems to deal with. Even less often, but we do hear a thank you for birthday and Christmas gifts, holding a door open for someone...little things, I guess.
7. What event this year are you most thankful for? Oh gosh, I guess if we are talking “event” it would have to be our nephew’s wedding, in August, and the wonderful family reunion we had while there.
8. Insert your own random thought here. I wish I could push a button and lose weight without all the work and discipline it really will take. Sigh.

And, speaking of losing weight, I heard back from the clinic that does the mini gastric by-pass. The total cost is (a mere) $17,000. Of course, that means I can't afford it and doubt that many middle class folks can. My health insurance is changing from Blue Cross to Humana, effective December 1. The lady told me that Humana just paid for someone they did last week, and for me to give her my information when I get my new card, and she will run it through for me, to see if they will cover it. I doubt it, but worth a try, I guess. Elective surgeries are rarely covered by main-stream insurance companies. In the mean time...low carbs.
Thanks for stopping by on hump day! Peace, love & hugs!!

Chlorine.. Sounds like we were living the same childhood.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could push a button and have a clean house. Oh, how I wish it!
xoxoxoxox
If you would switch out sweet potatoes for bread as your complex carb, you would be amazed at how much weight you can lose. Also sugar.
ReplyDeleteI lost a ton a few years ago, and it wasn't hard. I will share if you wish.
xoxoxoxo
Someone had playdough out at work yesterday for some of our residents, and we were remarking on the way the smell of that takes us back to when our kids were little and played with it. Also the smell of freshly cut hay, takes me back to my childhood on the farm.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your answers! Isn't it funny how siblings can be so different from each other? My three kids all have different personalities. Can you send me your recipe for the Buckeyes? I would love to make some for the holidays. That would be awesome if your new insurance covered the surgery! Have a wonderful Wednesday, Terri!
ReplyDeleteKris, the recipe is in my Recipe tab - second one down Peanut Butter Bars.
DeleteThere would be no surgery for me at that price either. Sure hope maybe the new company will cover it for you. My Jenn makes those buckeyes every year at Christmas...yummm. Memories are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI was innocent past the age of 18. I see how naive young people are now, but how much they think they know just like us.
ReplyDeleteYou know I always make buckeyes at Christmas too. They and my teacakes are very popular.
Wow 17,000 bucks is a lot of money, but hope your new insurance company will approve it. Can't hurt to try.
Last but not least, my sister Jackie and I are very similar. As a matter of fact, we're often thinking the same thing and sometimes say it at the same time.

ReplyDeleteI just read your last blog and left you a big message about the by-pass.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your answers today, as usual. You and your siblings are as diverse as mine. I'm blonde, 5 ft and 140, my sister is brown hair, 5'8" and 185, our baby brother is black hair, 6'3" and 280. We look nothing alike.
I never knew there were mini gastric bypasses. Wonder why it is called a mini? Wow that is a lot of money for one
ReplyDeleteIt is done arthroscopic (4 holes) and only one night in the hospital. And it is reversible, according to the information they gave to me.
DeleteStopping by from hodgepodge
ReplyDeletehttp://airforcewife-cabral.blogspot.com/2013/11/wednesday-hodgepodge.html
I cant believe that it cost that much for a mini gastric bypass. that is a lot of money for one for sure!
The answers where fun. I wish I had siblings. I was adopted and an only child, so, have no comparions to make. I'm not even like my adopted father (God is merciful) or my step-mom. :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, I always enjoyed dancing too. In my youth I took ballet and jazz dancing. I couldn't do any of those moves now if someone was throwing rocks at me. *ha ha*
I do hope you'll consider not having the bypass. Maybe it's God's mercy that it's so expensive. I'm of the mind it might be something that will end in regret. You'll lose the weight. It just takes time. The Quintessential Magpie is right about changing out some foods to avoid sugar. My husband did the same thing for us and we lost weight and where never hungry. Also, almost all modern breads have sugar in them now. That's a huge weight gain right there. AND I've learned that sugar has now been connected with susceptibility to contracting alzheimer's disease. My step mom was skinny as a rail but ate boo coo amounts of sugar and died from this. You do not want to get alzheimer's. It's really awful.
God bless. ~:)
Chlorine takes me back to 5th grade swimming lessons with the Girl Scouts at the YMCA. The pool was over-chlorinate and overheated, and I passed out in the changing room. When I came to, my candy had been stolen. :-p
ReplyDeleteI've never thought about making buckeyes in a pan, but now that you mentioned it, I may try it :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading that. Each time I get to know you a little better.
ReplyDeleteHadn't thought about frozen milky ways in years. We used to get those at the pool snack bar too. I like the smell of a pool. It takes me back to that feeling of freedom we have in childhood.
ReplyDeleteThe wedding in August sounds like it filled your love box with wonderful memories to last a long time!
ReplyDeleteBTW, Terri, I have three friends who have each lost at least 40 pounds so far, using a plan found in the book 'Trim, Healthy Mama.' They all love it because they say they never ever feel deprived, or like they're on a 'diet.' Evidently it drops the carbs, but in an easy-to-live-with way! :-)
I was the almost the same way at 18, its a hard age on most people that aren't ready for adulthood!
ReplyDeleteI know it's early for Christmas, i guess people feel like they get the best deals if they shop now! I haven't started yet, and i have no idea what to get people.
I love Publix too. And I love peanut butter - Skippy! And I imagine you are the type to say thanks a lot too. sandie
ReplyDeleteI'm running late this week getting around to all the Hodgepodgers. I hear ya in regards to surgery, etc. Insurance. And with this Obamacare, I don't know what's gonna happen from one day to the next. Time will tell all.
ReplyDeleteAs far as dieting goes, my motto...just eat sensibly, even the things you like, but with MODERATION.
