Is it only Tuesday?!....
I don't know if it's because I've been so busy at the office, or that I was off so many days, but it sure feels like it should be, maybe, Thursday?!
Joe is feeling SO much better, and the swelling in his face has gone down to almost normal. He wanted to eat tonight, and he even shaved! Appetite is back, and he plans to get out to his client's office tomorrow. Whew! This is so good, and also good - so far, I haven't caught it.
I started digging out my cake supplies tonight. I kept some of my tools when I sold my business, back in 1993. I owned and operated "The Wedding Cake" bakery for four years, back when we first moved here. Cake decorating was a hobby before then. When I couldn't find work, after we relocated to Lakeland, FL, from the metro D.C. area, I went to work for Alicia, who owned the business. After working with her for six months, she asked me if I wanted to buy it from her. She was sick of doing cakes. Alicia was a registered nurse. She worked at Tampa General Hospital on Sunday - Wednesday. She did the cakes Thursday-Saturday. Her husband was not employed, and he helped her with the baking and clean-up. (I actually hired him a few times to help me with deliveries.)
I bought her out. She let me keep the name, the phone number, and the cakes that were still on the books. The price was good. Awesome way to get started. I did it for four years. It was a killer. I didn't have Joe to help (except sometimes late at night and sometimes for deliveries on Saturdays). He was busy getting his CPA practice established. I did it all by myself. I averaged 4 wedding cakes a week, plus birthday cakes, shower cakes, etc. I don't regret it. It was actually wonderful and a great experience. Food service is grueling, though. I got so busy that I needed to either move to a bigger space and hire people to help, or get out of it. In 1993, I was fortunate to get a job as the Business Manager at the local Catholic High School, and was able to sell most of my equipment. Larry took over the space and the phone number, but changed the name, and he does catering, too. He is still at it, all these years later. God bless him.
I don't think many of you knew I used to do cakes, and I had a couple of comments about it, so thought I would explain. I left the High School to work at the Museum, where I have been for almost 16 years. It has been lots of years since I did a wedding cake, so doing one for our wedding celebration dinner party on Saturday will be fun. I will definitely have pictures for you.
Not much else to talk about tonight! We loved the start of Downton Abbey, and were happy to see the first episode of the new Revenge season! This week brings back many of our favorite TV shows!
If I can ask my prayer partners to please offer healing prayers for my friend and co-worker Gregory. He had surgery today, which was successful, but he has weeks of healing ahead of him. Another friend is facing open-heart surgery on Monday to repair a birth defect that he thought would not have to be done until he was in his 60s or 70s. Pray for Matt and his surgical team, please. If you are connected to me on Facebook, I asked for prayer for Bella. She is a child who has been battling cancer most of her precious life. Two more tumors were just found, and the latest chemo didn't work. Please pray for Bella and her family, too. Thanks so much!
Hope you are having a good evening! Peace, love & hugs.

So glad Joe is getting better. That's good news. God does answer prayer. I've made notes on your friend and co-worker, and Bella, in my prayer journal.
ReplyDeleteI'm one of those who didn't know you made cakes, having your own business. That explains a lot. :) I once tried my hand at baking birthday cakes for friends. I wasn't very good on the decorating. Like they say.... stick with what you know.
No, I didnt know you had a bakery...how interesting and I know you were good at it! Nor did I know you worked at the high school before the museum. You had had a varied work life for sure. Prayers for those you mentioned this morning, and good to hear Joe is on the road to being well again. It has been a long week after having holidays thrown in, but hoping your Wednesday is a good one! Hugs
ReplyDeleteI worked in personnel at the FBI, in Washington, D.C. (4 years), and then went to the American Red Cross (6 years), where I supervised a word processing group and trained people on the "new" computer system (1983-I have stories!). Then I went to work for an environmental research group, before moving to Florida. Yes-I've been around! LOL
DeleteBefore moving to the D.C. area, Linda, I worked for Nationwide Insurance.
DeleteWow you have sure done a lot of varied jobs. Good for you! You won't get bored that way. lol Are you still doing your jewelry too?
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that Joe is feeling much better. Have a great Wednesday!
So nice to get to know you better!
ReplyDeletePrayers for Joe and for the others on your heart.
Now I know your cake will be lovely! Can't wait to see the photos. Also glad Joe is feeling better as I'm sure you both are (and maybe the kitties too).
ReplyDeleteI will keep Bella and everyone in my prayers.
I bet you will have a great time making a wedding cake now that it is for fun and not work. Just reading about it made me hungry for one. Take care and enjoy the party.
ReplyDeleteWow...you have worked a lot of places and varied work too. I have worked many different jobs too. Once I tried to do a complete resume and had to whittle it down because it looked like I was a job hopper. Now I just volunteer....never thought this would be my life.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that Joe is better and that you didn't catch it. Yea!!
So glad that Joe seems to be better now. Fingers crossed that you don't go down with it. I never knew you used to do cakes. How interesting. I love getting to know more about each other.
ReplyDeleteIt is so good to hear that Joe is feeling better! I did know that you did cakes and I have always thought that would have been such a cool thing to get into. Did you do jewelry making at the same time that you did cakes?
