The Entertainer (Theme from The Sting)
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
The Entertainer (The Theme from The Sting) 1973
Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.
Chosen in memory of Robert Redford: Aug. 18, 1936 - Sept. 16, 2025
1) The Sting marked the second teaming of Robert Redford and Paul Newman. The two enjoyed almost 40 years of friendship. One passion they shared was sports cars. Newman raced Porsches professionally and Redford was deft behind the wheel of a classic Karmann Ghia convertible. Think about one of your longest friendships. What did you two first bond over? Nancy Drew!!
2) During their first movie together – Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – Redford was late so often that Newman joked they should change the title to, "Waiting for Lefty." Do you have a friend who is perpetually tardy? Or are you that friend? I don't have any friends now who are always tardy. I am usually first to arrive (which isn't always good either). If I am on time, I feel like I'm late.

3) Back in 1936, when Redford was born, baseball's Hall of Fame opened in Cooperstown. Coincidentally, two members of his high school class of 1954 are represented in the Hall: Redford, with memorabilia from his baseball film, The Natural, and his teammate on the Van Nuys Wolves, Don Drysdale. "Big D" was inducted for his stellar Dodger pitching career. Have you recently spoken to, or corresponded with, one of your high school classmates? I spent a week with my BFF Elaine and her hubby last July (we talk every couple of months), but I am on Facebook with lots of high school friends, where we comment back and forth often.
4) Redford admitted he had a few run ins with law enforcement during his teen years. He specifically recalled being picked up for breaking into the neighbors' back yard and swimming in their pool. Were you a mischievous kid? Gosh, no. I'm one of those classic first-borns who had responsibilities from a young age and was to always set a good example. I saved this photo and use it to garner sympathy now and then (giggle)... I am seven years old, washing dishes!

5) Redford went on to CU Boulder. He confessed to being a distracted student and only lasted a year and a half. While not good in class, he was popular with his coworkers at his after school job, mopping floors and cleaning bathrooms at a restaurant called The Sink. The restaurant is still thriving, and Redford returned whenever he was in Boulder. He wore a Sink t-shirt during a national press conference in 2018 and when asked what The Sink was, he was happy to plug his former employer. Do you often wear graphic tees, decorated with a favorite band, restaurant logo, team mascot, vacation destination, etc.? I wear t-shirts most of the time. Favorites have illustrated Bible verses, another is from New Orleans with cats playing jazz, and one says "I survived the 60s twice," which I got for my 70th birthday.
6) When he was a struggling New York actor, he and his wife lost their first child to crib death. Redford told AARP magazine that he blamed himself, and said it's a wound that never healed. Tell us about a time you felt guilty but shouldn't have. There are many times in my life when I've wondered "why" or "if only", but we just have to put it behind us and move on. Thoughts like that can hurt you and those around you. God is in control. Give it to Him.
7) Legendary costume designer Edith Head said she liked putting Redford in hats because they balanced his strong, square jaw. Do you take your figure flaws into consideration when you choose your clothes? LOL... yes. Baggy is better!!
8) Forever fit, Redford credited his physique on exercise and genes, not diet. He said, "Healthy food is good for the conscience, but Oreos taste a helluva lot better." What's the last cookie, candy or treat you indulged in? I indulge in ice cream most every evening. Sometimes I consider it my dinner. I had a cookie at Bible study on Thursday. It had cranberries in it and was delicious.
9) Random question: Do you prefer to bathe or shower first thing in the morning, after work, or before bed? I shower every morning. If I've been working or out on a hot day, I might jump in the shower, but I am rarely out on a hot day and don't work outside unless I just have to. By the way... It's been years since I took a bath. Bad knees and now artificial knees make getting in and out of a tub impossible. Walk-in showers are the best invention - maybe second only to air conditioning!

I love the picture of you doing dishes!
ReplyDeleteI also love the Entertainer. I used to play it on the piano all the time. :)
I'm an evening showerer, just because I seem to always be busy in the morning and I don't want to get up early!
Oh yes, ice cream …
ReplyDeleteI took a lot of baths when I was younger and I am glad. The last bath I took was probably my last. It was hard for me to get out. My knees are getting bad too and I am just losing strength. I was having a lot more pain at that time though, so who knows.
ReplyDeleteI love ice cream. Enjoy! Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

I got a kick out of the quotes you have here about ice cream, Terri. They are perfect for the deliciousness and joy a simple cone can do. Have a marvelous weekend!
ReplyDeleteThe Sting was a movie from my far past! lol
ReplyDeleteGee that all brings back memories.
ReplyDeleteI too ask why sometimes and why not at others, but like you said - you have to go on. No choice.
Thanks for the smiles, Terri. Ice cream does indeed make everything better.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful picture. Another happy memory.
ReplyDeleteIt's been about 5 or 6 years since I've had anything with sugar. I have to stay away from it because I'm a recovering carb addict. It makes me sick as a dog to eat sweets or carbs or vegs now. Strictly carnivore. I'm much healthier that way.
Blessings.
Given my druthers, I'd be one of those habitually early folks. In reality, however, I'm married to a near-tardy individual. Color me, trying to strike a happy medium!
ReplyDeleteThe only decent t-shirts I own now are church-related, but I'm seriously thinking of ordering something from Turning Point USA.
Wishing you a blessed Sunday. Hugs!
I wonder if you were standing on a stool to wash those dishes at age 7! I don't think I could've reached inside the sink to do them then, but I did dry a lot of dishes throughout my childhood/teen years, and I'm still doing it. I do like ice cream, and occasionally have some for a snack, but mostly I eat yogurt and granola for my snack. I know yogurt has some sugar in it too, but somehow I've convinced myself it is good for me. It doesn't affect me like ice cream does. I am a night shower person. I just feel cleaner getting into bed if I've had a shower first. I don't like to shower in the morning for some reason, and yes, I agree, baths are out for us now. I have a big garden tub, and I've used it once since we've lived here, just to say that I had! If it was a jacuzzi I might be tempted more often! LOL. But it is SO hard to get in and out of safely, and the water gets cold too quickly. I enjoyed your post and I hope you are having a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteYes, there was a stool to stand on. And I wasn't told to wash dishes. I probably asked if I could.
DeleteI enjoyed your answers. Also, I love your Halloween background - so fun!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blog
ReplyDeleteTerri, I always enjoy your blog posts (and that's no exaggeration). I am always inspired by how you don't allow things to get you down. You also seem to recognize the potential for negativity and steer yourself away from it in healthy ways.
ReplyDeleteAs for ice cream: yes, Gary and I have had it for supper many times! As a result of reading this post, I would consider it for tonight's supper, but earlier this afternoon I made some egg salad, so we'll probably go with that plan.
You are fun!
That picture is just darling! I can't remember how young I started to wash dishes. But I do know that the summer I was 11 I washed a lot of dishes in the month of June. My mom grew acres of strawberries to supplement our farm income. She and my two older sisters and other teen girls picked strawberries while I stayed in the house to be with my younger sisters. I washed so many dishes that the underside of my forearms broke out in a terrible rash from resting them against the wet sink while I washed the dishes. It took months and medical attention to get rid of the hard blistery rash. Well that was a long story I hadn't thought of in a long time, haha!
