The Saturday 9...

Thanks to Sam for today's Saturday 9!  You can join in HERE!

Saving All My Love for You

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Saving All My Love for You (1985)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) This was Whitney Houston's first big hit, her introduction to a mass, national audience. But music was not her first career. While she was still in high school, Whitney was a model and  Seventeen magazine covergirl. Is there a print magazine in your home right now? If yes, who is on the cover?

2) During her modeling days, she also appeared on packaging for Simplicity patterns. Can you sew?  Yes, I can sew but it's been a long time since I used a pattern.  I mainly just do repairs now. Fabric is more expensive than buying off the racks these days.

3) "Saving All My Love for You" was the record that made Whitney Houston a superstar in the UK. Let's flip that: Tell us about a British performer you enjoy listening to.  Elton John was the first to come to mind.

4) This song was composed by Michael Masser. He left his career as a stockbroker to pursue his passion for music and scored his first major hit with "Touch Me in the Morning" by Diana Ross. Do you feel you have a greater affinity for the analytical/logical or the creative/emotional?  Can I say logical and creative?

5) The lyrics were written by Gerald Goffin. He, too, took a circuitous route to music success. After high school, he joined the Navy. When that stint was over, he went to college and studied chemistry. He worked in a lab for a while, but that was just to earn a regular paycheck until he could support himself with songwriting. What was your first job after you finished your education? How long did you stay at that job?  My first full time "real" job was doing accounts receivable at Nationwide Insurance, in Columbus, OH.  I was there for almost two years after I earned a diploma at Columbus Business University. I didn't earn my Bachelor's degree until I was 50. I was working at Polk Museum of Art when I achieved that milestone and was there for 20+ years.

6) While this week's song was Whitney's first hit, it wasn't her biggest hit. That was "I Will Always Love You," from the soundtrack of her movie The Bodyguard"I Will Always Love You" was written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton. The film's star and producer Kevin Costner called Dolly personally to get her permission to use her song, a courtesy she appreciated. Who has recently been thoughtful or kind to you?  I have the best neighbors who are also dear friends and show kindness over and over.

7) Whitney was a big fan of tomato soup. So is Barbra Streisand. (Maybe it bestows some kind of musical superpower!) What's your favorite soup for an autumn day like today?  I like chili, pho, or vegetable beef soup best, but also chicken noodle.  I prefer homemade to canned and am not a tomato soup fan.

8) 1985 wasn't just big for Whitney. It was also the year Bruce Willis became a household name when his TV series premiered on ABC. Can you name it?  Moonlighting!!  I loved that show!

9) Random question:
While dining out, have you ever sent food back?  I have a couple of times but I don't do it often.

Peace and Hugs!

For the joy of human love,
Brother, sister, parent, child,
Friends on earth and friends above,
For all gentle thoughts and mild.
Lord of all, to Thee we raise,
This our hymn of grateful praise.

  4. Elton John would be my choice, too, as would be chicken noodle soup. Happy Saturday, Terri!

  6. Right away I thought of Elton John! I'd no idea fabric was so pricey; I can hear my sweet mother's voice now, "That's just wicked." I hadn't thought of Moonlighting in years, but it was one of my favorites. French onion is my favorite soup, yet I'm hesitant to order it in public ... worrying about people watching me struggle with ALL that gooey cheese.

  7. I keep cans of chicken noodle soup and tomato soup in my pantry. The chicken noodle soup is a quick meal for me when I am feeling puny. Tomato soup is exceptionally good with a grilled cheese sandwich. But of course, homemade soups are always best, but I don't always have time to make it when I want it most. LOL. And yes, sewing was something I enjoyed in high school, and made most of my clothes during those years, but haven't really sewn a thing since then. It's too bad fabric and patterns got to be so expensive!

  8. We do have a print magazine in our house and Mark and I are on the cover :-)! I remember watching Moonlighting. I don't like to send food back because I always wonder if they spit on it hahahaha!

  9. Yes, Elton John! I so well remember when Whitney died. Jeremy and Mike and their friend Kim were here for the weekend from DC where they lived when we got the sad news.

I love soup, and I would be hard pressed to say which is my favorite.
