Goodbye, Cruel World
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer questions, however, and here are today's questions!
Saturday 9: Goodbye, Cruel World (1961)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This week's song has a circus theme. Have you ever been to a circus? If yes, did you enjoy it? I have been to the circus many times but my grandparents took me when I was very young. I mostly remember the elephants and the trapeze performers. I have been once or twice as an adult and did enjoy the show.
2) James Darren sings that he's running away to join the circus. When you were a kid, did you ever run away from home? Nope. I was blessed with a great family in a great neighborhood.
3) While he understands intellectually that this girl is no good for him, he tells us his heart is stubborn. Do you have a stubborn streak? Oh boy, do I!! Stubborn, hard-headed, and set in my ways.
4) Though he had three top 20 singles, including this one, James Darren found more consistent success as an actor. Between 1959 and 1963, he played surfer Jeff Matthews, aka "Moondoggie," in three Gidget movies. Have you seen any Gidget movies? What about the TV show, starring Sally Field? Yes to both!! I loved all the Gidget movies and episodes on TV.
5) "Moondoggie" got his unique nickname because he enjoyed surfing in the moonlight. Looking back on Summer 2023, did you visit the beach (by moonlight or otherwise)? No. I didn't even get close to the beach this past summer.
6) While he was playing Gidget's teen dream, he was a married man. He wed Danish beauty queen Evy Norlund in 1960. They met when she came to Los Angeles to pursue a career and they were both working at Columbia Studios. More than 60 years later, they're still together. Tell us about the longest-married couple you know. My friend, Helen, and her hubby were married 64 (I think) years before Al passed away.
7) James Darren also played Officer James Corrigan on ABC's police drama, TJ Hooker. Have you ever considered a career in law enforcement? No. I did do a 15-week Citizens' Police Academy class that was fun and interesting.
8) In 1961, when this song was on the radio, matching his & hers mohair sweaters were on trend. Do you have a favorite sweater? Yes, and it is old and ratty looking but I still wear it.
9) Random question -- They say we're all young at heart. In what ways are you childlike? Stubborn, like a two-year-old.

Praise the Lord, His Mercy is more
Stronger than darkness, new every morn
Our sins they are many, His mercy is more.

Always enjoyable answers Terri. Wishing you a beautiful Saturday.
ReplyDeleteWishing a great chill out this weekend after all you have been through.
ReplyDeleteEven though my childhood was anything but idyllic, I've never had a desire to join the circus. The performers never looked very clean to me. And I would be the one always worrying about the care and welfare of the animals. I don't like caging things unless it's absolutely necessary. Just my opinion. Plus, I don't like crowds. *grin*
ReplyDeleteHope your eyes are all healed and you're having a lovely Saturday.
Blessings. xx
Sweet Post Terri: I love the 60s music. The circus is something I am not fan of, I have seen animals abused will never go to a circus again.

Oh, I loved the Gidget movies ... Flying Nun, too. My only memories of the circus happened as a small child. Much to mother's dismay, my dad would always buy me a little chameleon with a 'gold' leash -- for days thereafter, I'd be wielding a flyswatter to feed my new pet who, of course, mysteriously disappeared within a few days. Karl Wallenda was a friend of my Sarasota uncle, but after the '62 (?) tragedy I lost interest in watching high-wire acts.
ReplyDeleteMy parents really limited my TV time when I was really young, so I have limited memories of the Gidget movies, though I knew about them. I do remember Darren from T. J. Hooker. He was so handsome!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful weekend, Terri!
I feel like we're the only ones who never ran away! A police academy course? When did you do that? That would be so interesting!
ReplyDeleteBack in the early 90s but the Lakeland PD still does it.
DeleteI do remember "Moondoggie". LOL This brought back memories of our youth! I remember going to the circus when I was in Girl Scouts (I think, or was it the Brownies?...it's been a LONG time!) I did run away one day. I was mad at my mother for some reason and I took off running down the road (we lived in the country). When I got down to where the road turned I saw a lot of birds on the power line above and they were all looking at me and I got scared (because I had seen the movie "The Birds"), and then I remembered that Mom was baking an apple pie, and I decided I'd better go home and have some pie. LOL. I think I was about 10 years old. That was that. LOL. My mother didn't even realize I had left! LOL.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!!
