The Wednesday Hodgepodge...

Thank you, Joyce, for today's Hodgepodge!  You can become a Hodgepodger HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 487

From this Side of the Pond

1. The Hodgepodge lands on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Have you visited the memorial?  No.  Any desire to do so?  No. Hawaii is a place I have never wanted to visit.  No interest.  Have you visited other WW2 sites and memorials? All of the ones in D.C.  Do you think we do a good job of teaching current and younger generations about the events of WW2?  No.  Do you think it matters?  Yes, it matters!!

2. Many books, both fiction and non-fiction have been written with WW2 as the setting. Is this a 'genre' you gravitate towards?  Mysteries, detective stories, historical stories, and funny books.  Share with us a book (or two) you've enjoyed that is set in some way around WW2.  Schindler's List (I read the book and saw the movie). If you're not a reader, how about a movie?

3. According to Better Homes and Gardens Magazine there are seven popular color trends for the holidays this year. They are- red and white, Victorian blue, pops of pink, rich shades of green, rainbow hues, black and white, and nostalgic retro colors. Are you 'trendy' when it comes to holiday decorating in 2022?  No. I like traditional red and green.  How so? Does your tree have a 'theme'?  Just memories.  Many of my ornaments have memories.

4. What's a current trend you buck?  Oh, let's just not go there right now.

5. What's your favorite chocolate something? Chocolate anything! Yes!

6. Insert your own random thought here.  Helen had her surgery yesterday afternoon. It was supposed to be 9:30 but they didn't take her until 1:30. Typical, I guess.  They gave me two options for her.  One was a partial hip replacement.  Two, just fix the broken femur (just below the joint).  The ortho doc said option two was best for her. He was afraid the replacement wouldn't heal and she would be back in for surgery in a month or so.  She will be in a wheelchair, and not able to take more than a few steps.  She will (hopefully) be able to transfer from the chair and back to the chair. That's pretty much how it's been anyway.  The procedure was a success. She was transferred to the orthopedic floor and will get some therapy before going to a nursing home/rehab center (right next to her memory care unit). The doctor did warn me that her dementia might be worse, at least at first, because of the anesthesia.  I am concerned that she won't respond well to the therapy (be able to understand).  Please keep her on your prayer list!  Thanks!

Peace & hugs!

John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

  1. I loved your answers...yes, traditional red and green colors for Christmas for me too. I am a very traditional Christmas person I guess...and yes, my ornaments and decor have memories and meaning for me. Not a trendy person at all. Now, definitely I will be praying for Helen. So glad she came through the surgery well, and now for the recovery and rehab ahead. May God give her strength and health to recover and get stronger. Praying she will be able to understand the instructions, etc., and that she won't be in a lot of pain. Praying for you to have patience and compassion, which I know you do already, but sometimes these situations tax our feelings and energies and things can become overwhelming. Just praying God will give you wisdom especially concerning her future care, etc. (((hugs))) to you for being such a dear friend to Helen. She is truly blessed to have you.

  3. Thanks for the update on Helen. I think that surgery option was the best, too. It is a shame she had to have surgery at all but a person can't tolerate a broken bone that needs mending. She is one tough woman to have survived that and the surgery. I "knew" her a little bit through your blog before you moved and afterwards when you and Joe would interact with her. Sometime, if you need something to write about, remind your older readers and the newer readers about Helen, her personality, and interests before she got dementia.
The big question - - was she able to get her hair fixed before this leg break?

  4. I love red and green at Christmas too. I am not all that much a fan of red, but just can't seem to break away from it. I guess I am too traditional. I love all my collected ornaments. They are so much fun to pull out each year and revisit. I have been to Pearl Harbor. Very reverent place. I love WWII novels and history books.
Thanks for letting us know about Helen. Tough situation, but she seems like a tough cookie too.

  5. John 3:16 is one of my favorite all time verses.
Glad Helen is doing okay - that is sure hard.
My parents got married 11-21-41 and my dad was called away. Tough.

  6. I didn't read the book, but Shindler's List remains one of the most moving films I recall. We no longer hang ornaments on our tree but have several 'special' ones hung in the entryway and kitchen.
Thank you for this update on Helen. I'm still praying, "Thy will be done."

  8. I missed Helen needing surgery and am sorry to hear that. Glad the procedure went well. I do think anesthesia really messes with our thought processes as we get older especially. Take care. I'm glad she has you.

  9. Good answers as usual! I missed the earlier post on Helen. I'm sorry she is going through this. I expect her dementia will be worse too.
I'll be praying for her, and you.
