Tuesday 4
Back to School
Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 dear friends. I am so glad you are continuing to play along!
It can be hard to come up with topics from week to week so your input would be great.
Let's go back to school today...
1. You are back in high school... what are you doing after school lately? Baby-sitting my brother and sisters and sometimes getting dinner started. My mom worked at the post office and my dad got home about the same time she did. I got an allowance of $4.00 a week for helping. On Fridays during football season, though, we had a quick band practice right after school and before the game. Our neighbor, Mrs. Kirts, was the stand-by babysitter. She was such a sweet woman. Her husband was a minister but had been gone for many years. She was an artist and the walls in her house were covered in paintings.
2. Do you do homework early or late? I usually had a study hall later in the day and got most of my homework done then but I did do homework first. Do you really study? Yes, I studied and usually had more A's than B's. I did get a C in geometry and in chemistry. Hated them.
3. a, Do you go to the games? Yes. Football? Yes... I was in the marching band, so went to all the games. Basketball.. what is your favorite to attend? I was not a basketball fan in high school and don't remember ever going to a game. I did like football and loved being in the band. Believe it or not, we didn't even know what soccer was back then. Gasp!
b. Do you go to the dances? Yes. Prom? Yes. (what'd you wear?) Back in the dark ages, when I was in school, we had dress codes. Girls usually wore a suit (skirt, blouse, and jacket) for homecoming games. We wore formals for prom.
4. Lunch! What are we having today? I ate in the school cafeteria and we had good food back then. What is your favorite lunch? I loved pizza days and chili days, especially. I seem to remember we paid $3.25 for the week. I did live just one block from school and we were allowed (with written permission) to go home for lunch but I rarely did. Mom was working and I didn't want to make my own lunch! Our neighbor (behind our house) was one of the school cooks and she was a good cook!! They actually had recipes and cooked real food for us in our little town.
Have a good February!!
Lots of memories with these questions! Pizza day... the best.
ReplyDeleteTerri, it seems like life was just better, way back when. I remember school lunches as yummy too, they seemed to actually put effort into them. I usually brought a peanut butter sandwich, re-using the "tin foil" it was wrapped in, no jam as I didn't like how soggy it got. I bought a carton of milk, but usually didn't have chips or a cookie or anything with my sandwich unless it was right after pay day....but sometimes, I got to buy lunch, and that was amazing...I liked the fish sandwich. You looked sweet at the prom! I actually did my homework, too...
ReplyDeleteI just love the photo, smiles. Hey, Vanguard HS in Ocala had really good lunches, but I usually took a bologna sandwich. I hope you have a beautiful day, friend.
ReplyDeleteIn high school we ate at the restaurants by the school…three…school lunch was 25 cents but…hamburger fries and coke 35 cents…hot dog and extra 25…I was so small I ate little but food was cheap…I saved lunch money to buy stamps when boyfriend left for college…married later..,or records and magazines…Seventeen…Teen Magazine…I loved going to school…did many reunions to raise scholarship money until I moved to Indy and now Florida…fun days…
ReplyDeleteThese memories of yours really took me back today, Terri. I recall loving the football games (I was a cheerleader), and having to dress up for Homecoming as you described. Such a more gentile and civilized world . . . I'm glad it was part of our shared experience.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Terri,
ReplyDeleteWe had good lunches in junior high but the high school cooks weren't quite as good. They did make some really good yeast rolls, though. Yum! That would've been my only time to get lunch. The rest of the time it was soda and crackers or if I had time to pack a sandwich with a can of pop that worked, too. We didn't have a dress code in the late 70s but all the girls wore long dresses to the prom. Mine was a mint green backless a-lined dress. I don't know whatever happened to that dress. It would've been fun to have hung onto it. I rarely went to the football games because it was a long drive from my home and I didn't have a car. I did go to a few of them. One time with DH and another time with my best friend because her brother played football. That seems like a lifetime ago. I enjoyed reading your answers. I'm playing along today. :) Have a funtastic Tuesday!
I enjoyed your answers...love your photo. I just remembered I liked baked potato day and loved our salad bar too.
ReplyDeleteLove this picture! Gosh yes, I remember those long gloves ..... and feeling so elegant! I wonder if young people today still dress 'to the 9's' for prom? Aside from LAHS's first vending machine my senior year, I ate bologna sandwiches on oleo'd white bread every day. And never grew tired of them!
ReplyDeleteYour hair looks so pretty! Love the photo. I went to both of our Prom's also. It was called Junior-Senior Prom by the time I went (mid-70s) 'cause our school was so small.
ReplyDeleteI liked pizza days too. When I was in High School, I remember carrying my lunch often. Still did that even when I worked except Friday's, then I treated myself to a bought lunch.
Blessings. xx
Such fun memories. Enjoyed reading your answers and seeing your picture.
ReplyDeleteSchool lunch was good when I was in school too. It is not that great now. They have to follow so many rules.
ReplyDeleteI always had a study hall too so I could finish my homework and do assignments with friends. Loved your answers! Have a nice week!

Fun memories! My school was little and we didn't even have a football team, and of course hadn't heard of soccer. No hot lunch either. The seniors did boiled hot dogs once a month as a fun raiser. We also didn't have a prom because it was a Christian school and they didn't believe in dancing. We had a banquet. :)
ReplyDeleteI know I read this this morning, but I guess I got distracted before I wrote a comment! LOL. Love your prom picture. You looked so pretty with your bouffant hairdo. I wore mine like that too. While you were marching in the band, I was cheering beside the grandstand. It was a fun time, and we got to go to all the games that way! Happy days...fun memories.
