The Way You Look Tonight
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme.
1) The lyrics tell us that no matter how low the singer feels, it will raise his spirits to recall the way his lover looks tonight. Share a special moment in your life that brings a smile to your lips, no matter what. The day (May 11, 1985) that Joe and I said "I do" in front of our families and our Priest, Fr. Fasano. The happiest day of my life. Not only did I get to marry a wonderful man, but he also gave me two sons on that same day. I was and am so very blessed with many happy days that put a smile on my face but that one is right at the top!
2) This song was introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1936 movie, Swing Time. It won the Oscar for Best Song. What's your favorite movie song? Oh my gosh. I LOVE Fred Astaire movies and all the songs in them, this one included.
The Way You Look Tonight (1936)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

3) Though today Fred is revered as a Hollywood legend, producers had to be convinced to give him a shot. The initial notes on his screen test were: "Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances." Tell us about a time when someone underestimated you. I've never really thought about it. I imagine I have been underestimated numerous times but have also proven myself worthy more times than that!! I am woman, hear me roar!! (LOL)
4) Fred's legion of fans includes Jackie Chan. The martial arts star says Astaire's movies influenced the way he choreographed the Kung Fu fight sequences in his films. Mr. Chan is one of the most popular film stars in the world. Have you seen any of his movies? I am sorry - I recognize his name but don't usually watch kung fu movies.
5) Fred was always fascinated by new things. In the 1970s, when he was in his late 70s, he took up skateboarding and became so good at it he was awarded life membership in the National Skateboard Society. Have you been skateboarding? If not, is it something you're tempted to try? I skateboarded WAAYYY back in the 1960s when they first became popular. Mine was red, wooden, and had metal wheels. I did have fun on it but not like kids do today. It was a thrill to skate down the slight hill from the school's main entrance to the sidewalk, maybe 40 yards downhill. No knee pads, no helmets... we were tough!! Ha!
6) Fred's friends were amused by his passion for daytime soap operas. In the days before video recording, he would call home from the clubhouse at the golf course and ask his maid what had happened that day on his favorite "story," As the World Turns. Is there a show you try not to miss? Not soap operas anymore, though I was hooked, a long time ago, on All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital, and Dark Shadows. They were 30 minutes back then and came on right after school was out.
7) In 1936, the year this song was popular, the US patent office issued a patent for the Zippo lighter. Beginning in WWII and for decades after, Zippo lighters were issued to our soldiers. During the Vietnam War, troops had their lighters engraved with personal mottos. What's something you have had engraved or personalized? What did it say? Our wedding rings are engraved with our initials and LOVE. I am wearing Joe's pinky ring that has his initials engraved on it - JND.
8) Also in 1936, a killer tornado struck Tupelo, MS. Have you ever been in a tornado? How about a hurricane or an earthquake? Never a tornado or earthquake (praise God) but I have been through several hurricanes. I live in Florida. The worst ones here were back-to-back in 2004 when Charley, Frances, and Jeanne went right over Polk County. We lost power for only three days but bought a generator soon after. Always prepared, now. We only lost one panel in our pool screen so were blessed by that.
9) Random question -- We're creating an action figure of YOU. What two accessories should we be sure to include in the box? CATS!! LOL

Fred Astaire was a fantastic dancer, actor and Patriot. I like his movies too. For me, one of his best movies was the one that came out late in life: Ghost Story (1981). It has a little nudity in it but it's a fantastic story. A real thriller with big name stars.
ReplyDeleteBlessings. xx
I'm glad you have all those happy memories to look back on.
ReplyDeleteI can't picture you skateboarding! But you're right, we were tough back in the day...no seatbelts, helmets, we drank from the garden hose... HA!
I remember a couple of half-hour soaps, but the two I cut my teeth on were hour long.
Have a great weekend, Terri!
OH my, this does take us back a bit, doesn't it? Fred Astaire was an amazing talent, but I can't say that I really enjoyed him all that much. He just wasn't as handsome as other leading men like Cary Grant, Gregory Peck, etc. They were my favorites in the classic movies. I never tried skateboarding, at least not seriously. I was too clumsy. I did roller skate, but even that was done very carefully. None of our 3 sons ever took up skateboarding either, thank the Lord. But Scott was an especially good roller skater and ice skater. He's very agile even now. I enjoyed your answers. Oh, the only soap opera I ever really watched was All My Children...I was a young mother, and it came on at 1:00 every day. I think it was an hour long then. I'd put the baby (Benton) down for his nap, and I'd sit and fold diapers and baby clothes and watch my show in peace and quiet for a while. I do remember watching Dark Shadows when I was in college. It was always on in the student lounge. That was a LONG time ago!!! Have a great day, "Cat Lady"!!
ReplyDeleteI watched those soaps too. I loved Dark Shadows!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
That was a fun 9! Happy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteHA! I knew you would say Cats, grin. I will keep saying this, Terri, you are remarkable. smiles
ReplyDeleteOn the topic of engraving, I have a glass-domed anniversary clock Tom gave to me on our 25th wedding anniversary. He had it engraved with the date and occasion. It's a treasure to me.
ReplyDeleteThe day Danny and I got married is one of my happiest, too, Terri. Yes, I used to be a big fan of Days of Our Lives, but no longer.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
I enjoyed reading your responses, Terri. I remember when the soaps were 30 minutes and then moved to 45 minutes before getting to an hour. In the dorm, we would start with Ryan's Hope at 12:30 followed by All My Children, One Life to Live, General Hospital and end with The Edge of Night. Everyone in the group tried to schedule their labs so there would be 1-2 people watching so they could fill in what you missed. Have a relaxing weekend, Terri.
ReplyDeleteI so love your attitude, Terri! Tom occasionally watches those old kung-fu shows, but I'm not a fan. Astaire? Yesssss! My action figure accessories would be Grace and Macie, but I want a cell phone, too.
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with your skateboarding experiences!! Wow! What a woman. And, my answer to #1 was similar and, although our wedding day still makes me smile, our first recognition of our love for each other is engraved on my memory! Wish you lived closer so we could share experiences and encouragement.
ReplyDeleteI think hurricanes would scare me. I am landlocked, so we usually just get rain and wind from hurricanes (and humidity)...no big deal. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.
