Don't Get Around Much Anymore
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Don't Get Around Much Anymore (1942)
Unfamiliar with this song? Hear it here.
1) In this song, our lonely Romeo shares how he amuses himself these days. Which of the activities that he mentions have you most recently enjoyed: playing solitaire, reading a book, or listening to the radio? I listen to the radio in the car, I read my book for a while every evening and I always play a game of solitaire on my Kindle Fire each night... just one game before pulling the covers up.
2) The lead singer is tenor Bill Kenny. Which range is your voice: soprano, alto, tenor, or bass? I sang alto, second alto, and first tenor in high school chorus. Now my range is so limited I might be able to sing bass. Maybe.

3) When Bill was on vacation in Atlantic City, he entered a series of talent contests and won 21 of 22. This led to his first professional booking. Tell us about a vacation of yours that took an unexpected turn. Ha! In 1989, Joe and I were here in Florida on vacation and we bought a house in Lakeland where we lived for 28 years before moving to Mas Verde when I retired. He told everyone it was the most expensive vacation he ever took. Yep, we were nuts but it all worked out. That was in May and we were residents in July.
4) This song was composed by Duke Ellington. He received many honors, including a coin struck in his honor. In 2009, he graced the District of Columbia's commemorative quarter. Do you save coins in a jar or piggy bank? Yes. Joe used to save all of his change and there was over $40 in that bank. I drop coins in now and then but am not as consistent with it as he was.
5) In 1976, Stevie Wonder recorded a tribute to Ellington called "Sir Duke." What's your favorite Stevie Wonder song? I always liked Stevie's music and fondly remember him as LITTLE Stevie Wonder. One of my favorites is "Isn't She Lovely".
6) The lyrics were written by Bob Russell. When he began his career, he shared an apartment with future novelist and TV screenwriter Sidney Sheldon. Have you ever tried your hand at writing lyrics, a novel, or a screenplay? Nope. No writing talent or imagination for any of those.
7) In 1942, when this record was released, the federal government established a rationing system to conserve crucial supplies for our troops. Sugar was the first food to be rationed, followed by coffee and then meat. If you were around back then, which of those items do you think you'd miss the most? Definitely meat. I am a carnivore and need protein to function.
8) Also in 1942, actor/singer Peter Tork was born. Without looking it up, do you know why Peter Tork was famous? Yes, I am old enough to know the Monkees.
9) Random question -- Have you ever deliberately lost a game? I have.
Fun Grandmas sometimes lose the game...
Peace & hugs! Jesus loves us!
UPDATE PS... I got a call yesterday offering me the job with the State of Florida, Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission!! He said getting me on board will take about three weeks but the job is mine! WOW!!! Praise God!

A Big Congratulations on your new job!!!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you got the job and it sounds like something you will enjoy. Have a good Saturday.
ReplyDeletePraise the Lord, indeed, Terri! Sounds like a wonderful place to work. I'll keep on rooting for you!
ReplyDeleteThe Monkees was my go-to group back in the '70s. I still like a lot of their music. Yeah, I know, they didn't write it but to me music is for enjoying. Doesn't matter to me who wrote it or anything like that. I'm such a Neanderthal. LOL
ReplyDeleteThe new job sounds wonderful! You Go Girl! Congrats!
Love & Prayers xx
Congratulations!!!! A state job at that, wow, that's good! Those usually come with all the things you need, so praise God for taking care of you! (I love my coffee, but I'd need to say meat too. I can go through a day and eat ONLY meat and feel good)
ReplyDeleteHave a really good weekend!
Congrats on your new job!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Peter was so cute....the Monkees were big when I was about 10 0r 11. Everyone loved Davey but I liked silly Mickey. Many people told Marvin he looked like Mike Nesmith ( when Marvin was younger).
ReplyDeleteThat job sounds great! WOW! I'm so happy for you! And yes, I eat a lot of protein too...and sing along with the Monkees in my car! lol
ReplyDeleteGlad you heard from your job interview and were offered the job! I'm guessing that you are going to take it. I remember the Monkees. Enjoy your weekend, Terri!
ReplyDeleteYeay!!! on the new job, Terri! I can't wait to hear more!
ReplyDeleteI never much cared for Stevie Wonder, but LOVED the Monkees. Daydream Believer! Joe's comment about "most expensive vacation he ever took" made me LOL. Had y'all ever been to Florida before?
Yes, Myra. My parents and grandparents were snowbirds so we enjoyed visiting them when they were here and were staying with my folks when we ventured into Lakeland and started looking at homes. They all spent winters in Leesburg, FL, which is about an hour north of Lakeland.
DeleteTerri, you write a great blog! My first husband saved coins and categorized them, rolled them, and stored them in toolboxes. After he passed away, I discovered over $3000.00 and believe me, those coins saw me through a few rough times back in 1985.
ReplyDeleteWOW! And I thought $40 was treasure!! LOL
DeleteAnd congratulations on the new job! They will love you.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!! ---ha, on the most expensive vacation, wink. Oh and we have a Conley Savings and Loan and it currently holds $200 in coins. Yep, counted it. LOL
ReplyDeleteYour vacation story definitely tops the anniversary weekend Tim and I took and ended up buying a car! My grandmother and aunt came to visit us when we lived down there and they nearly bought a house! We had actually hoped they would because they wanted it for a vacation house but wanted us to live in it all the time and just let them stay with us when they came. It was a big house with a nice pool. Kind of a bummer when they decided not to!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the job! A job with the FWCC sounds like one I would love. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun there.
So happy for you... what will you be doing?
ReplyDeleteI am so happy for you. Hopefully, you can lead your current employer on the right track. Maybe you were sent there to do just that.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the answers to your questions. I really want to get involved in doing posts like this.. I like them.. Wow! Congratulations on the job!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new job! That is so exciting!

I like this song! I've always liked those older songs and have said I was born in the wrong generation. :)
ReplyDeleteWoohoo on the job!
Oh, so now I see what the new job will be! Interesting place to work...and with the state too! I assume it is part time? What will you be doing? Exciting for you...sorry for the guy you've been working for, but hopefully he will find someone who can untangle his mess! Loved your answers here, btw. So glad you made it to Florida and we got to meet in person!!
ReplyDeletePRAISE THE LORD!!! "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He's watching [you[." (as the song goes)
