The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) 1966
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) The bridge that inspired this song is The Queensboro Bridge in New York City. Are you near a bridge right now as you answer these 9 questions? There are a couple of 'over-passes' near here but no bridges over water. The closest over water would be about 45 miles away... The Howard Frankland Bridge takes us from Tampa to St. Petersburg.
2) Paul Simon says he "loathes" this song and only performs it because fans want to hear it. What's your favorite Paul Simon song? I liked Simon better as the duo, Simon & Garfunkel and that song would be Bridge Over Troubled Water.
3) "Groovy" is such a 1960s word. What common word/phrase from 2020 do you predict will sound just as silly and quaint someday? I can't think of any 2020 words that will someday seem quaint or silly. Coronavirus, Covid, mask... nope, not quaint or silly.
4) Paul is a lifelong Yankees fan and was thrilled to meet his all-time idol, Joe DiMaggio. Mr. DiMaggio was, at first, less than thrilled to meet Paul because he thought the song "Mrs. Robinson" made fun of him. Once Simon convinced him it was an homage, the men got along fine. Do you have a celebrity encounter to tell us about? We met and had our picture taken with Sarah Palin back when she was always in the news (and I was 50 pounds heavier). She is a little thing and had on FIVE INCH heels.
5) Art Garfunkle was the other half of Simon and Garfunkle. Art and Paul met in sixth grade when they were both in a school production of Alice in Wonderland. Tell us about one of your school theatrical appearances. I was, still am, and always will be a behind-the-scenes girl. Give me curtains to sew, a back-drop to paint... I'm in.
6) "Artie" used to love needling Paul about his height -- or lack thereof. He maintained he was trying to be funny, but Paul thought it was mean and says the constant digs hurt. Is there anyone in your life who similarly enjoys teasing? Joe is a teaser but it is never nasty and most likely about himself..
7) Paul told NPR that his impulse to write new music has always come "in bursts." He'll go years without composing, and then he'll write every day for months. Do you often feel creative? I have always needed a creative outlet but have lacked motivation lately. Maybe it will come back.
8) In 1966, when this song was popular, First Daughter Luci Johnson married Patrick Nugent. Their reception was held at the East Room of the White House. The couple had an 8 ft. tall wedding cake and when the bride threw her bouquet, it was caught by her sister, Lynda. Sure enough, Lynda married a year later. Tell us about a wedding you attended (or your own). Most recently, we attended our nephew's wedding, but that was in June 2017, in Pittsburgh. It was lovely and it is always fun to see all the family for a happy occasion! There have been too many sad occasions between then and now.

9) Random question: Which do you regret more -- the times you were cautious or the times you were reckless? I've said it before and I still mean it. I have no regrets in my life. I will say that I am rarely reckless but even so, I have no regrets. Lessons are learned and life goes on!
Thanks for coming by this Saturday!!
Peace & hugs! Jesus loves you!!

Wow! You met Sarah Palin? She was certainly an interesting character and I wish she could've gone further, but actually I was happy for her to be able to go back to Alaska with her family who needed her there. Not sure what is happening now in her life. She kind of dropped off the radar. I loved Simon and Garfunkle music. They were great during "my time". Love the wedding picture of your nephew and wife. 2017 was the year our son got married too, and yes, there have been too many sad occasions since then, but they are very happy and we are so thankful for them as a couple. God is good to bring together those who need to be together!! Happy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteSarah and her hubby got divorced, last I heard. Not sure what she is doing these days but she is a spit-fire of a person. That day we met, she was a speaker at a leadership conference we attended. I told her she got my vote and so did her daughter (on Dancing With The Stars). She laughed so loud... it bubbled out of her and made people look at us. She thanked me for both votes!
DeleteWe have 3 bridges across the Tenn. River downtown. I am a behind the scenes person and dont want to be up front at any time. Let me do something quietly and I am happy. Meeting Sarah Palin was a special treat I am sure. I liked Simon and Garfunkle and their music. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove that photo of you all with Sarah Palin, Terri! Yes, I was a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan back in the day. Their music and harmonies were always the best.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
Being short I can sympathize with Paul. I love their music.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
What a beautiful bride and groom, Terri. Our little town is in a flood zone because of the mountains, and they/we have bridges built over the river(s). We look more like Amsterdam, grin. I always enjoy your answers, have a beautiful day friend.
ReplyDeleteOh groovy indeed.....that word take me back to the 70s. Bridge over Troubled Water was also my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song, Terri. I like what you said about regrets....if we learn a lesson from a poor decision hopefully we have learned and grown from it.
ReplyDeleteGreat answers on 2 & 3. My older brothers loved to tease people, sometimes they got on my nerves!! lol
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on #9...no regrets and that is how I learn life lessons. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

I agree that his "Bridge Over Troubled Water" duo is the best one. I remember that as a teenager.
ReplyDeleteSo you've lost 50 pounds since that photo? That is fantastic! I'm probably at least ten pounds lighter than I was then, and wish it were more.
How cool that you got to meet Sarah! She is an interesting lady.
ReplyDeleteI'm so envious of you getting to meet Sarah Palin! Yep, I'm a fan. I have to agree with Old Blue Eyes -- Regrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a Simon and Garfunkel fan, but I do like that song.
ReplyDeleteI love that you got to meet Sarah P.
I grew up in a teasing family - fun teasing not mean. I would get along great with Joe!
I liked their music..used o think it was 'groovy'....I loved Art's All I Know song and played it a lot at one time. Hope you have a good night. xo Diana
